HILLCO UNCAPPING TANK HONEY GATE!

Normally most of the honey comes from the extractor. This time I believe I’ll get more out of the capping tank because I let the frames sit in the tank for an hour or more before running them through the Maxant extractor. If I had more frames, say 30-50, I would run the extractor the same time I’m uncapping my frames. My next big purchase will likely be the bigger 18 frame extractor from HILLCO...

    • @JoneyJefe
      @JoneyJefe Před 6 dny

      @@g8rgrl13 depends. A hive that’s ready, maybe anywhere from mid March to mid April. These hives are new, so it takes them longer to build up the population that will fill up 2 deep boxes and a super. That’s why there are two here that don’t have supers. They just aren’t ready. In fact one had a super and I took it off because the bees weren’t going in it. It’s just too much empty space. Other variables include how many of your frames have comb? How many are plain foundation? It takes time for them to build up the comb from scratch. That’s why we save our frames with comb from other (abandoned) hives and supers with our lives. Many of the frames in these hives were foundation so they didn’t build up as fast as the others. But if you have a roaring hive in early March or April and they’re bringing in lots of pollen, I’d have no issues putting on a super early April. I believe Tracy likes to have his up and primed by May. So to me, that means you’ve got the population up, fed them well, and the first supers on by late April. I usually aim to harvest twice. After July 4th. Put the boxes back on asap. Then harvest again in September or October. I don’t leave too many supers on over winter.

I put it on top thinking it would end up being another honey super since it was backfilled some with nectar in the original hive that swarmed. Plus, I put them on top of the honey super that was essentially fully capped 7/10 frames. This frames were mostly foundation, so I didn’t expect to get much more honey since they had to make a lot of comb. I don’t mind if I get brood in my honey supers. I just leave the frames if they do. No big deal. But it rarely happens.

    • @Swarmstead
      @Swarmstead Před 3 měsíci

      @@JoneyJefe ok then I'm confused. It sounded like you said you only had 5. And that you wanted to expand to 15 but "it won't be happening". What do you mean by "swarm genetics"? What is wrong with the genetics of swarms? All bees will swarm.

    • @JoneyJefe
      @JoneyJefe Před 3 měsíci

      I did. I wanted to expand it further. I’m rethinking all of that here. I wanted about 15 (between the three apiaries I have here in this area). But it looks like I’ll close it down to two spots and abandon this specific spot. But it’s all unsure atm. It takes a lot of time away from my larger apiaries that are at the opposite side of my home in the northern part of the state. I’m a one man operation so the time on the road equates to vital time away from my main ones. Correct. All bees swarm. Some swarm more than others. If you like ones that tend to swarm more, then I support that. I’ve got several hives from swarm traps, cutouts, and such. I personally prefer to spend my time in the hives doing splits and such than chasing or catching swarms. But if I catch any this year, I’ll probably bring them out here in the middle of the woods. One of the challenges, the one I brushed off from beekeepers in this area, is that this part of the state the woods are mostly pine trees. Bees get most of their resources from trees and only a small part from the flowers we think of on the ground. If your woods have a large variety of trees, it’s better. But timber companies aren’t planting Red Maples, Locus, Catalpas, etc. They just plant Pines. And the bees get nothing from them. More experienced beekeepers in this area tell me they have challenges with their hives here because of this fact. I thought, “nah…..”. But I’ve been out here several years and I see what they’re talking about.

      You’re in the OEB business and I’ll concede that you have more expertise on them than me, since I only own one (the one in question). I am aware things can be faked/incorrect/etc. I have papers (somewhere). He fits the physical descriptions (height/weight/age) and temperaments. He’s almost 13. When standing next to other English bulldogs at the vet and other places, there is a distinct difference in their appearance and size. The vet acknowledges him as an OEB. However, I’m not as familiar with some of the terms you’ve thrown out and atm, I’m too busy to look them up. Offhand they remind me of genetic lineage I’ve studied when it comes to various things such as peppers, honeybees, viruses. Most importantly is that HE believes he’s an OEB and that he remains a wonderful dog and a fierce protector of my children. ❤

    Hello again, I think my attempt to top hive feed was too early and started a robbing event. Made a screen and it looks to be thwarted. Quick inspection over the past two days shows I still have fresh nectar. Will confirm in a couple weeks and keep an eye on things.

      Try covering the hive with a dark wet towel and keeping a reducer in the front. Cover the front/top/back of the hive with the towel.

Some of my favorites to follow (so many) are Bee fit, Kaymon Reynolds, JC’s Bees, the Dirt Rooster, Mr Ed, Bruce’s bees, the Fat Bee man, and several more that I can’t think of atm. But there is SO much great content with these guys.

      @JoneyJefe have seen pretty much everyone you mentioned. Say yes, starting out new. 5 years ago or so, we ended up with 2 hives under the house. I managed to cut them out myself. Place them in a very rustic thrown together box, and relocated them on the property. They lasted on their own for about 4 seasons before it was a dead out. Had a swarm arrive here mid-June and did everything I could to keep them from nesting under the house again and ended up with 2 colonies. Cut out the first to my old box. They are doing fine. Discovered the second and decided to get real equipment. When that equipment arrived, we discovered 2 more under our travel trailer and ended up buying more equipment. So, it's now 1 what I call a feral colony and 2 other hives in traditional 10 frame deeps. The last cutout was the only one that the queen was physically captured and moved. The combined trailer cutouts, I saw a queen. Combined the two and after 2 week inspection have a good laying pattern and good brood so looking good. My feral flock, looks to be thriving so assumed the queen was captured and dumped in with the rest. My last hive, will inspect next weekend. Wanted to give it 2 weeks to recover. I've seen workers bringing in stores on that one, so they are getting acclimated.

      The feral colonies are often the beekeepers most precious and favorite colonies! It sounds like you are a super fast learner and very skilled!

    • @JoneyJefe
      @JoneyJefe Před 7 měsíci

      I’ll take the fart comment as a compliment. They are pretty stable. Much more than they look. But I agree that they need to be reinforced a little. They’ve all survived through storms, nearby tornadoes, and more. But one fart could be the thing that does them in. Keep watching. I’ll make it a point to add support and braces. Thank you for the reminder! 😊
