Is malnutrition a bad thing or a way for the body to shut down? We don't need our loved ones to live longer if they are not healthy. If they stop eating we might need to listen to what they are telling us.

Communication is very difficult with my almost 95 year old mother who is in a Care Home. She has always been anti social and showed no interest in community activities when living in her own home. Mother has stage 5 Alzheimers and little capacity to engage or maintain a conversation with her peers. Mother is able to converse with family members but is repetitive and forgetful. She is reasonably compliant with the Staff members but we , her family, see a deterioration both physically and mentally, at every weekly visit.

What do you do when your parent has slowly started eating less and refuses to even take one more bite of something? We have been giving mom boost in everything she drinks now and she has tons of snack stuff on her room plus fresh fruit beside her. She barely touches them. She has started to get really angry if we ask her to eat more. I have told her she is losing weight and proved it by putting her on the scale, but she does not seem to care. She fights everything we try to get her to do these days, She thinks we are abusive and bullies. It is myself and my adult daughter who are her care givers now and she has warn us both out. She also gets verbally and physically abusive at times. She nearly needed stitches the other days because my daughter tried to remove something and mom scratched her self with her claws, she refuses to let me cut. She has even tried hiding food when we don't look. Im have reached my limit of patients and i feel mean for being stern with her at times. I have tried every tactic i can think of.

  • @claireakahayes-fogarty8452

The word "journey" should not be used to describe negative circumstances. "Issues" is a better word. Mum has dementia and I will never recover from the sadness. I need to cry and cry and cry! I'm naturally and innately a highly sensitive person and proud of it. I love my all-or-nothing thinking. I don't think people should have to be "comfortable" with the idea of a family member having dementia, and I hate the phrase "it's part of life"...it should NOT be part of life. I don't like change, never did, never will. I'm a highly sensitive person and proud of it. Predictability is my best friend! Change is not my friend and never will be! Shame on my Mum for having dementia! Bad Mum, very bad Mum!

Very difficult to think that my mum might still be hungry or thirsty even after trying to assist or coach her into eating. Occasionally its a good day and prompting or assisting works well but the thought that on bad days she hasn't had enough food or liquid but still might want it really is a worry. Maybe its cause I know how i would feel as an able bodied person to not be able to eat my fill or quench my thirst its a distressing feeling. Or am I over analysing it if only they could confirm there satisfaction in some way

My 94 year old mother has stage 5 Alzheimers and has lived on her own for 32 years. Mother has carers twice a day,six days a week for medication, meals and light household tasks. She has no idea how to use her microwave oven or hob safely. Her oven and his have been disconnected because of this and her carer prepares her vegetables in the microwave. Mother's appetite has rapidly diminished over the past few months and she no longer eats a full meal. She snacks on biscuits and has half filled cups of tea. Mother will not consider ready meals or meals on wheels because she is stubborn and refuses to comply with assistance in any way, shape or form.

My 94 year old mother has stage 5 Alzheimers and lives on her own. Mother has carers twice a day. Mother has no idea how to use her oven hob or microwave, so her carer prepares mother's evening meal. Mother's appetite has decreased over the years and her food intake is paltry and limited. She relies on biscuits to sustain her and sleeps more often than usual. Her weight is decreasing and mother is frail looking and has lots of skin lesions ,bruising and marking which she cannot remember inflicting upon herself. Why is mother not in a Care Home when her ability to sustain herself is in serious question? Mother is in full denial of all her issues e.g.deafness, incontinence, macro degeneration of her eyes, rheumatism in her knee and failing mental ability. She refuses to use any assistive devices and her stubbornness is truly breathtaking. We, her family have to tolerate her attitude and hope that her future assessment with Adult Social Care Services will determine her future residence.

My 94 year old mother has stage 4-5 Alzheimers and lives on her own. She has carers twice a day for medical, light household tasks and meal preparation. Mother is eating less and less now and has a paltry diet. Mother eats toast, banana, crackers and cheese for breakfast and lunch.. respectively. Her carer prepares her tea of sparse vegetables, 2 small potatoes and 2 slices of ham. Mother can no longer use her oven, hob, microwave or steamer due to her present condition. My sister has recently informed me that mother now eats her cooked meal with her fingers. Mother will not consider going into a Care Home because she is stubborn, deluded and in complete denial of her condition. We, her family, have to tolerate her attitude and unwillingness to comply on a daily basis.
