A Vision for Notre Dame: Rebuild the Heart, the Mind, and the Hand
zhlédnutí 467Před 4 lety
Our Hands need our Minds, guided by the Heart. We support the full restoration of Notre Dame as it stood prior to the tragic fire. Our proposal focuses on how the site surrounding Notre Dame can be used during the restoration process. The rebuilding of Notre Dame should be a public process and the site should convey the important meanings of what has existed there, the traditions that contribut...

    The talk about rebuilding Notre Same, reminded me about Guédelon castle, and how they had preserved a lot of the knowledge needed for the reconstruction. I allso think you'd like fellow youtuber and craftsman Brent Hull.

    Formally trained in architecture here. 25 years in the business. Stereotomy has always fascinated me. However, I can do without the mystique surrounding it. This mysticism is French Enlightenment, where groups create cults. The study of this topic should be public and universal in orientation not surrounded by the romance of special knowledge.

    • @ReneSalasDesign
      @ReneSalasDesign Před 6 měsíci

      Formally trained in architecture here, 23 years in the biz. I am equally skeptical about unchecked mysticism, but one has to acknowledge that if we wish to develop a building culture that can endure for 1000+ years, the narratives surrounding the education would naturally want to intertwine deeply within a culture. Originally this education was comingled within economically competing institutions, so protecting and gating this knowledge was incentivized. Today those economic incentives are minimized and the education is relatively ungated. However, we'd hope that this knowledge could endure any changing economics or governing systems, and one of the best ways to ensure that might be to imbue such knowledge with powerful narratives that increase the likelihood that motivated persons will safeguard that knowledge through any provocation.

    • @ReneSalasDesign
      @ReneSalasDesign Před měsícem

      @@AlvinLeong-me3iu the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Romans and Chinese definitely had their own version of stereotomy. L'trait is the specific 'language' of construction in the French tradition, which has origins in Greece/Egypt. The language of construction is/should be tethered to history as much as our spoken language is.

    • @ahoj7720
      @ahoj7720 Před 4 měsíci

      Free Masonry and Compagnons share a common origin and split over time (hence the name masonry), the first being referred as "speculative" and the latter as "operative". This common origin is clearly visible from the symbols of Masonry and the name "Great Architect" for God.

    It is unfortunate that this video has (at this time) only found 355 views... The presenters are to be commended for speaking truths to the realities of poor modern concepts of restorations rather than the ethos of..."...like for like in means, methods, and materials..." that most (not all) professional historic restorations adhere to... As a practicing Timberwright, working in many of the folk traditions over the last 40 years it is also heartening to find the next generation understanding this craft in its proper details and understanding... I (too often!) meet architects, designers, and related (alleged?) professionals with little to no understanding about the actual modalities of material application of the built vintage fabrics within architecture (i.e. stone, earth, timber, textile, etc,) yet they claim expertise on the topic and a voice at the proverbial table to how the historic built fabrics of our collective architecture should be treated and restored...So often very poorly and without actual regard or erudite understanding at all... Thank you so much for a wonderful presentation...

      Thank you for the kind reply! There are many like minded traditionalist architects who have found themselves living in an age where the dominate position of the industry is at odds with the humanist values that architects had once held. But I believe the tides are turning as many in the design profession are trying to seek out ways to strengthen the connection between design and humanity and humanities crafts. It is our hope to be able to raise awareness of the lessons from history so that the construction industry can relearn why humanistic traditions are vital for the flourishing of all communities. Cheers.
