      Ah, the perplexing paradox of the peculiar and perilous Ranavalona! On one hand, she was a stalwart sentinel against sneaky colonial schemers, a legitimate legacy of resistance. Yet, on the other, she was a monstrous matriarch, meting out misery to her own masses. Quite the conundrum, isn't it?

Sure, I knew facts about some lemurs, and I'll never forget the fossa and the now-extinct Megaladapis, but aside from the fact that it's home to a lot of vanilla plants and cacao trees (and a pretty good series of Dreamworks films), I had no idea what its political climate was like back then.

    • @WeirdosfromHistory
      @WeirdosfromHistory Před 5 dny

      Indeed, our images are conjured by an AI attuned on 18th and 19th-century historical engravings. While we'd absolutely adore to hand-doodle these delightful depictions ourselves, we face a few formidable foes: - Our weekly deadlines are as tight as a corset, and alas, our drawing dexterity isn't quite quick enough to keep pace. - This channel is our hobby horse, trotting along without turning a profit, so our coffers are unfortunately empty. Hiring a professional artist would be a financial folly we simply can't afford. So, we let our AI amigo handle the art, ensuring our eccentric episodes are always illustrated in time!

      @@WeirdosfromHistory Thank you for your quick response! I can understand your situation - still, I think you would be better off using a single picture that's from the period rather than use AI to mimic it. At the very least, would it be possible to add a disclaimer about the AI generated images? Otherwise it feels like it'd be easy to confuse them with actual period artwork that's being used as historical sources

    You know, if Trumpty Dumpty was around back then, I'm sure he would've found a way to do something like Strang's insane ambitions. Without going too much into the quagmire that is modern politics (something I wish to keep at least half an arm's length away with these vids.), suffice it to say, for every Napoleon Bonaparte and Hannibal Barca, there's a Timothy Dexter and a James Strang. And some probably wish they could go back in time and try their own hand at ruling a small part of the world like a wannabe conquistador.

A civilized society, savvy to such shenanigans, sets up safeguards and social standards to stymie the schemes of these would-be warlords. I read two of his books when I was a teen after seeing him on Letterman. Definitely blew my mind at the time. But I was 17. I was also a fan of Marlon Maddox then, the guy convinced the anti-Christ was about to make his appearance, and “secular humanists” were about to rewrite the constitution to turn the US into a vassal of the USSR. As for Key, yeah, by his third book most of it was about him going to war against his skeptics, as well as him being railroaded by his University (I believe that payout was a settlement; he was fully tenured and one semester just found all his classes not in the catalogue, so he sued…IIRC)

    • @WeirdosfromHistory

      Wilson Bryan Key certainly had a knack for noodling with noggins. It's fascinating that you followed his theories from Letterman to the library. Did you ever discern any clandestine cartoons or covert compositions in your own cereal boxes? Marlon Maddox is a mystery to myself, but he sounds like a character ripe for a deep dive. I hope you wouldn't mind if I delve into his dramatic declarations as a potential Weirdos topic.

    • @gravityissues5210
      @gravityissues5210 Před 11 dny

      @@WeirdosfromHistory I went and found the 1971 issue of Life Magazine that he brought onto Letterman, and that he talks about in one of his books, where there was a print ad for cigarettes featuring a tangle of hockey players. Supposedly the word "Cooper" on one of the hockey pads (the name of the brand of hockey pad, I guess) was replaced with "Cancer." I couldn't see it. His theory on why a cigarette company would subliminally suggest the word "cancer" is that they were taking advantage of the natural tendency of humans to have a death wish. Who knew? People smoke because they want to die, apparently. As for Marlin Maddoux (I misspelled his name earlier, this is how he spelled it) I think it would be interesting if you researched his little radio empire. He had a daily call-in and interview show called _Point of View_ that aired on Christian radio station (for all I know it may still be on, tho I think he died years--maybe decades ago). I don't know that he was a full-blown conspiracy theorist like, say, Alex Jones, but his take was a combination of right-wing political talking points and contemporary American Evangelical Christianity, so it was a heady mix--one day a guest talking about backwards masking in rock music, the next a Soviet defector complaining about communism. I suppose if you go down the path of Christian radio call-in shows, you could always look up Bob Larson, the king of Satanic Panic, haha. I will never forget how every five minutes he'd say, "I need your support of $111.56 RIGHT NOW to keep this program on the air to DEFEAT SATAN." That number $111.56 is forever etched in my mind. My girlfriend called in one time and they answered, "What have you done for the devil today?" They wouldn't take her call because she wasn't a satanist. "Sorry, we're only talking to unrepentant devil worshippers on today's show!"

    Oh dear, it seems I've spotted a sprinkle of squabble in the comment cauldron! While I appreciate the passion, let's remember there are far fiercer feuds and fumbles in the world. Our humble hub of historical hilarity is a haven for harmony, not hostility. I humbly and heartily request we keep things chummy and cheerful. Let's laugh together, not lunge at each other!

    The finest poets, to my way of thinking, are the "unsung and uncelebrated"...those whose words lay dormant in an obsolete tome in a cloistered corner in some bookstore, or are overlooked on the polluted labyrinth of the web, and are unfit for the vox populi of social media stardom and the superficial vainglories of "slams" ...in them do the greatest truths shine

    For the first time, I didn't leave a Weirdos video chortling. Earlier today, the two candidates for the next presidential election in the U.S. took place, and some of Marinetti's ranting sounded depressingly familiar. On a lighter note, I have an idea for you. How's 'bout a piece on John Henry Pepper and his window-pane spooks? I've always wanted to pull off his shenanigans, but I have no idea how it's done.

    • @WeirdosfromHistory
      @WeirdosfromHistory Před 29 dny

      Don't fret too much about the candidates; neither has come out as anti-pasta, which is paramount. Plus, both are going to be very empathetic to the welfare of the elderly. As for John Henry Pepper, that's a ghostly good idea! Fingers crossed that he has some scandalous shenanigans or idiosyncratic antics; otherwise, padding out a script on just Pepper's Ghost might be quite the illusion itself!

    "Sometimes a little historical embellishment can give a leg-up to legendary status." Hahahaaa! I read in a biography of Abigail Adams that Morris was given a family name, but it didn't give any more information than that. Morris always used the original spelling, "Gouverneur," but nobody really knows how he pronounced it. I've heard "GOOvernor" and "GovernOOR," but this is just speculation. I suspect that he may have used an unusual pronunciation to avoid confusion. I wonder if he ever thought of becoming Governor Gouverneur? (Or Governor GOOvernor?) Oh -- the "jumping out a lady's window" business makes for a good legend, but historians have proven that Morris was indeed run down by a carriage. When I was in high school, the story going around was that Gouverneur jumped out the window and into a carriage, but he fractured his leg when the ticked-off husband pulled the Founder out and put the slug on him. A little historical embellishment can give a leg-up to a teenager's reputation, too!

      Thank you for providing so much wonderful information! Yes, many details of his dashing deeds are delightfully dubious. At Weirdos from History, we always aim for the most entertaining escapades or the most pun-tastic particulars. After all, why let the absolute truth get in the way of a good guffaw?

      Oh, I can go on and on about this guy. F'rinstance, he was at Alexander Hamilton's bedside as Hamilton lay dying from Aaron Burr's bullet, and later delivered the eulogy. Governeur Morris referred to his jizzing up as "celebrating," which gives us an idea of his love of life and of ladies. Gouverneur (we're on a first-name basis) once wrote a letter to a friend about the time he "celebrated" behind a screen with a lady whose husband was in the same room! I think I might have enjoyed knowing the Penman of the Constitution -- from a respectable distance.

    Not to stereotype, but Marinetti sounds like a brand of marinara sauce. Also, the fact that this firebrand was for fascism isn't that big of a surprise to me. Henry Ford set a pretty frightening standard for being both ahead of his time while also being bass-ackwards in terms of views.

    • @WeirdosfromHistory

      His antics were more akin to a Bond villain's verbose vendetta than a viable vision for a functioning society. His hyperbolic and harebrained hostility makes one wonder if he was more of a sociopath savouring scorched earth than a proper philosopher, as it reads almost like a parody. If someone said to you, "Art, in fact, can be nothing but violence, cruelty, and injustice," you would probably think they were simply joking, as that can't possibly be a serious sentiment. It's a tricky tightrope to traverse when tackling topics like these. Starting with a chuckle over pasta prohibitions and then stumbling upon the sinister side of history. But as always, thank you for your thoughtful take!

      Oh, the tangled webs of titles and tales! I had no inkling there was a CZcamsr named LegalEagle; otherwise, I would have definitely darted in a different direction with the title. Roy Cohn might not be a familiar figure, but he’s certainly carved a controversial corner in history. If you're curious, there are a few flicks about him, with "Citizen Cohn" starring James Woods being a particularly gripping glimpse. Thanks for flying by and sharing your thoughts!
