    Would you say steel has better resonance than aluminum?

    • @WilliamJohnsonmusic
      @WilliamJohnsonmusic Před 9 dny

      That has been my experience yes! Most often when I hear a sound from metal that catches my attention it is from steel. I will say however that some forms of aluminum, due have nice resonance

    I’m trying to break away from 4/4… How does one do that?

    • @WilliamJohnsonmusic
      @WilliamJohnsonmusic Před 9 dny

      Great question. I have several suggestions and may make a short video about it and post later today. I have a percussion online course coming out that is quite comprehensive including a music theory section and videos on over thirty different percussion instruments. I have included thoughts, techniques, and practice methods I have gleaned and incorporated over the last couple decades plus. Should be available this July. Keep an eye out as I will be posting videos about it! In the meantime here is a little tip. Google popular songs in other time signatures. Start with something like 6/8 or 3/4. Listen to them A LOT and try to dissect them. As you listen to them it will become a part of what is normal to you. Practice and play/tap along to the rhythms. Also get a metronome, put it on a different time signature while driving or at home and listen and COUNT OUT LOUD to it in the same signature for a few minutes a day… just be sure to pay attention to the road! Haha

    I've watched all 5 so far. Great stuff, but you spin me around too much with your verbal counts not matching up to what I see/hear you play. Could you please just play the grooves long enough for beginners to catch on? Fills and other tone zone refinements indeed come in time, but it's nice to have fun and feel successful at the same time by holding the groove.

    • @WilliamJohnsonmusic
      @WilliamJohnsonmusic Před 10 dny

      Thank you for watching and for giving feedback! These videos as you can see are a few years old so I would have to go through it a bit better than I just did to see exactly what you mean. I will certainly consider your ideas (and have actually made some practice videos where I am playing simpler ideas for longer). It sounds like you would benefit from an actual one on one lesson so I could see what exactly might be confusing you and the counting could be better explained. Email me at williamjohnsonmusic@gmail.com I actually started on a “how to play bongos” video course that is more in depth but it is currently on hold while I finish a percussion 101 course.

    Why are the drums covered? Is it to mute the drums?

    • @WilliamJohnsonmusic
      @WilliamJohnsonmusic Před měsícem

      Hello! Yes, to keep them silent while practicing. I do it mostly out of consideration for my family in the house when I don’t feel like closing my studio doors. It also helps with hearing protection.

    Very good job in patiently breaking this down and bridging from the Afro-Cuban tumbao to a pop variation. I think some good Ralph MacDonald calypso double-time fills would be nice here too, like in Camel Rise in the Bobby Hutcherson Montara album. I play congas and I too listen very carefully to the melody of the composition to find my space while working with the trap drummer. Playing well requires paying attention to the details and nuances of the material, leaving ones ego at the door, to create a good product as a team. Very well done here, my friend.

    Nice Noble Records shirt..I live in Utah but I've followed his channel. Found your channel after having been asked to play percussion in an acoustic group recently. I've had some hand drums for years but haven't been able to learn and play with having 4 young children. I have been really enjoying your instruction.
