I'm convinced this is the best recording of this work. Ditto for the Debussy.
From a review by James Leonard, All Music Guide: ...these recordings were as good as it got, and just because we hear and perform music differently, doesn't necessarily mean that we hear and perform it better. (No kidding!) The Capet Quartet's performances of the quartets of Ravel and Debussy are, after all, informed by the fact that the performers and the composers were more or less Parisian contemporaries. And although performance styles have changed completely since 1928 and the lean, supple but almost vibrato-less sound they strove for has been supplanted by a richer, weightier sound (huh?), the Capet's flawless ensemble with its ideally weighed attacks, its perfectly balanced sonorities and its complete command of tonal color is still a model for quartet playing at its finest. Perhaps best of all, the Capet Quartet understood the combination of ardent emotions and powerful intellectual control that characterized French music of their generation, and they articulated their understanding in thoroughly compelling performance that will convince even those who came to musical maturity after 1928.

This is the best version of this I could find. Absolutely beautiful. I hope this is on CZcams forever.
Just here because i looked up the therm "Yehudi lights" on military aircraft. Apparently, they reduced the silhouette signature and made it harder to detect. The catchy song caught on to this form of active camaflouge in WWII.Who'ssss yehudi?
God, the guys look all plastered in that last photo.
Very personal beautiful and intimate playing of a type that doesn't exist any longer. I totally disagree with Flesch in his assessment of Zimbalist's playing. In our days of high tension playing, it is wonderful to hear such a relaxed performance.
...been listening to the Sirius XM 40s channel, 40s Junction and heard this for the first time a few weeks ago...born in 1949 - grew up in the 50s watching TV with mom & dad and hearing/seeing the 40s era stars on the variety shows they loved to watch...
@chaspoll1 I completely agree (his recording of the Ravel Trio is IMHO the most beautiful overall), and I've been thinking about this. I think one thing is that Ginette Neveu came along, who made all others seem like well-meaning amators. I've also seen Merckel was not liked as a concertmaster by his players (he must have been demanding, but hey!), not sure whether true or just a rumor.
I have the de Bavier recordings and have posted them on CZcams. Please search. I don't think they are quite as fine as this performance, though.
don't forget probably the first, fine and supreme version of Gertrude Niessen
Research this this fellow! Career included +Violinist at Metropolitan Opera. + Recording pioneer for Edison, Victor, Columbia & others Soloist and orchestra conductor of Victor studio sessions. + Vaudeville and popular as well as classical gigs. +Long tour with Harry Lauder in early 30s. + Non music career as a Chiropractor.
So much better than Kay Kysers more popular version that is played constantly on 40s Junction
Great stuff

Just beautiful! I'm so glad my parents shared songs like this with me so I appreciate them. Thank you for the post. Such a teaching song. Appreciate life while you have it and appreciate how priceless and fleeting it really is.
@2nd violinist: You say "As much as I like him, he wasn't really on the level of the better classical violinists of his time" I discovered South and Grappelli in my teens in the fifties. They find the swing in Bach which most others and betters are sadly lacking, in this important respect not being on South/Grapellis level.
What a treasure! Thank you for sharing this timeless recording. The older I get, the more I admire and appreciate Elman’s unique artistry. 🙏🏻🎻❤️

Very sad piece, almost as if it was reflecting the sad faith of Jews in Germany and his daughter Alma who was also a violinist and had her own orchestra in Vienna. After she was arrested by the Gestapo she was made a leader of orchestra in Birkenau playing next to the crematorium. Let their souls rest in peace.
Last photograph is of "The Pianist" - Wladyslaw Szpilman. The person sitting next to him seems to be Artur Balsam, but I can't be sure. Thanks for posting, and thanks to Bryan Bishop. The transfer is indeed excellent!
Wonderful recording, never mind its massive historical relevance. Incomprehensible so few likes. Thank you for posting.

Thanks for sharing, they are so gorgeous and exceedingly beautiful!
Fascinating, but as always with pinscreen one is left wondering if the extraordinarily laborious technique was justified by the result. In animation history it was a dead end compared with stop-motion and claymation. A feature would have taken decades to finish. The breakthrough of 'Snow White' doomed it. Incidentally, was this influenced by Claire Parker's enthusiasm for the cowboy star Tom Mix and 'his beautiful white horse'?
Simplemente maravillosas, un clasico
