Eh, if the Book of Jubilees is the one that proclaimed Simeon and Levi "righteous" men for *slaughtering all the men in town* over ONE man's crime, then no wonder it's not canonical. Jacob later cursed those two on his deathbed for their part in this incident and declared them too dangerous for their descendants to be allowed to stay together in one place: "Cursed be their anger, so fierce, and their fury, so cruel! I will scatter them in Jacob and disperse them in Israel." (Genesis 49:7) While the Mosaic Law in the Pentateuch later did call for a death penalty for rape, for adultery, and for other sexual perversions such as bestiality and sodomy, at no time did God ever authorize slaying an entire town over just one crime by one man. Whether Shechem's crime against Dinah and her brothers was that he'd raped her (by guile or by force) or simply that he'd defiled her by taking her virginity (and being an uncircumcised heathen when he did so) is not at all clear from the original text or its various English translations. That after Shechem "saw" Dinah, he "took" her (as Isaac "took" Rebekah to be his wife) and "laid" her (as Adam "laid" his wife Eve) is unambiguous; it's the last verb "וַיְעַנֶּֽהָ" that has the broadest and most ambiguous meaning, as it's used elsewhere in numerous places throughout the Torah to refer to being afflicted, humiliated, subdued, subjugated, debased, disgraced, and otherwise put down in both sexual and non-sexual situations. One of my Bibles translates "וַיְעַנֶּֽהָ in Genesis 34:2 to say Shechem "violated" Dinah, which is just about as ambiguous and broadly defined a word as the original Hebrew term; so... arguably it's a good translation? From all the bickering over this passage I've seen among Hebrew scholars both ancient and modern, I rather get the impression the original witnesses who testified to this incident (likely Simeon and Levi, as they surely had the greatest motivation to listen in on Hamor and Shechem's municipal gathering and hear how the townspeople responded to their deceitful offer) weren't too certain themselves what exactly happened between Shechem and Dinah, other than that he had taken her virginity and this had made her "damaged goods" in the family's eyes. For that matter, it's not clear Levi and Simeon originally intended to go on such a wild rampage; they might have thought merely facing the prospective ordeal of the men and boys all having to endure a week or so of pain and suffering from being circumcised would dissuade Shechem's citizens from accepting their offer. Even when the citizens decided to take the deal after all, the brothers might then have thought they could still retrieve their sister from Shechem with minimal resistance from the incapacitated townsmen, only for those townsmen to put up much more of a fight than they'd anticipated. What I've always found the most disturbing about this tale is that there's nothing the least bit implausible about any part of it. To this day, a beautiful and naive young girl going out on the town with several other girls to have some fun could easily attract the attention of that town's golden boy and end up getting herself into a sticky situation. If she and her gal pals were partying at a harvest festival involving some boozing and intimate dancing, and that golden boy spent the night flirting with her by bringing her drinks and inviting her to dance with him, it's not too difficult to imagine how she might end up going home with him that night and waking up next to him in his bed the next morning with a severe hangover, thinking "Where am I? Where are my clothes? Who is this guy next to me, and where are his clothes? Good Lord Almighty, what did I *do* last night!?"
