We aim to show and upload recordings of Boy Sopranos trained in the traditional "Head Tone" techniques which enable them to continue and develop their soprano voices throughout and past the various mutations. This was the method used by the masters of old which enabled boys to sing past their seventeenth or eighteenth year, not using falsetto, contra-tenor, but in pure soprano. If you would like our complete list available on disk, please ask.
Frank Ivallo/Colman - Natural Soprano Aged 33. Not Falsetto or Contra
Frank Ivallo was born in 1902 and retained his natural soprano voice throughout adolescence and to adulthood. Like many such trained before him he is now mis-classed as a "Falesttest" or "Contra Tenor". He made several broadcasts in the 1930s including with Henry Hall. It has been speculated that he had a congenital condition or that his voice did not break, but this has been disproved by doctors' reports that he was entirely normal in that was (if you get my meaning!) and that he spoke in a deep bass voice. Here he sings "Keep a Place in Heaven" His six records were newly discovered by me and issued on CD to be had from stephenrbeet@gmail.com Ivallo would have been in his early 30's here.
This is further evidence that boys who are trained in the natural soprano head tone from an early age may retain it to adulthood.

That Bb at the end... amazing!
I was fascinated to hear this. My dad (born 1920) was trained in head tone. The story goes that even at the age of 19, when he was called up, he'd still been singing with the trebles in his choir - although he said he sat with the men as he was 6 ft tall by then. Others who sang with him said it was true. As a POW, he was in charge of the music-making including writing parts both in MS and sol fa for concerts and he was thus motivated to keep singing. I heard one fellow POW in later years say he was introduced as 'the oldest boy soprano' in the business'! He'd have been 23-24 by then. After the war he sang alto for the next 49 years and always believed that his initial training enabled him to keep his upper register in good nick for so long. He maintained that he became aware he had a baritone around the age of 16, but he just continued to sing treble with no apparent change to his voice - because he could and because they had better tunes!
Eric the Rossignol is trained in the same way.

can you reply to me by email stephenrbeet@gmail.com Would love to hear more of his history
I'm a natural castrato. My larynx did not drop and I don't have an Adam's apple. I'm 41 years old and my height is 1,80 cm (5'11'') I chose a female gender identity (legally) because of being more accurate socially in these times. So, my name is Vera Arianna. Greetings!!!
Seeing as you have a different live version to the ones I've listened to, I was wondering if you had a copy of "Your Dog's Come Home Again" that isn't a live recording? I don't know too much about Randolph Sutton. Was it one of his earlier popular songs?
Unfortunately, I don't. I picked up the disc in a junk shop in Sheffield.
Cheers from Indiana

Is there a link or a citation to this new article/discovery about Frank Ivallo? I can't find any of the info presented in the description, I'd be curious to read it, if possible. Would be interesting to know more about Ivallo's vocal talents and background.
Yes, I have several newspaper articles and publicity from the time If you send me your email to StephenRBeet@gmail.com I'll let you have copies
I like the CD very much still, thank you Stephen :D
You are welcome
I used to go to hear this choir and GTB as often as I could, in my youth.

He sings a little like John McCormick very nice too. Also his son sang the songs in the film about another Irish singer Josef Locke. Father and son both had lovely voices. Well done the Midgely's
My father was a member of the Thetford Boys Choir. He is now 97 & has fond memories.
Thats Beautiful. Thankyou for sharing this gem.
I find this whole topic fascinating. Thankyou for my late education Stephen.
This realization helps me understand my inherent ability to sing in a countertenor/soprano range, which interestingly, is higher than most countertenors and has a mezzo timbre. At the age of 12, I began my training as a boy soprano and continued for two years. Surprisingly, these vocal reflexes remained with me even after puberty. For a long time, I felt like an anomaly, fearing the potential ridicule of being labeled as a freak. However, now, at the age of 28, I've found renewed confidence. While I may not reach the level of renowned countertenors like Jaroussky or Orlinski, the past year of training with an exceptional teacher and a few concert opportunities has revealed the impact of my voice on others. It has touched people's hearts, and this encourages me to believe that there's still time to build a career in my 30s. Even if it's just one person, I am willing to sing for that individual. As a result, I will commence my advanced studies at the music university next year, and I couldn't be more thrilled. It marks the first time in my life that I am pursuing something that truly brings me a sense of fulfilment.
THis is vey interesting. People are only just realising this voice which was almost totally lost since the time of the great Masters. Good luck and keep singing.
Very good, I liked it CD very much, ❤❤💯👍👍
Thank you very much
👍👍👍💚💐
Very interesting Stephen thankyou. I think most men think they can't sing above middle c without it becoming the reedy and hollow sounding falsetto. Mr Birds voice is beautifully even with no sense of strain or disconnection of the vocal chords.
Amazing voice of Frank Bird, 👍👍👍💐💐

Derek has a very beautiful voice, 💚💙💯👍👍
Very good sung by Gérard Barbeau, 👍👍👍👍
When you read about boys voices breaking earlier and the resulting problems of losing experienced boy choristers in cathedral choirs when they're at their best, there really needs to be a dialogue about this. The obvious question to explore must be whether modern voice training is actually detrimental to the longevity of a boy's voice.
We shall deal with this in a future demonstration. I don't think there's any doubt about it.
@StephenRBeet We could have very exciting times ahead. I find the reluctance among voice trainers to address your findings perplexing. When I was starting cancer treatment a few years ago, the consultant said that due to research treatment methods were constantly improving. Yet with voice training there seems to be a 'head in the sand' approach rather than consider the possibility that their teaching method is actually the problem.
The answer is, as much as the science of voice pedagogy improved, the application has worsened A LOT. Unless you really go to the most studied professional who is well-studied in both science and all kinds of voices and genres, you can not expect all the best results unfortunately. The simple fact that most voice teachers don’t even fix the simple vocal fold closure problems (very apparent in many of opera’s biggest names today) says a lot.
@@KajiVocals And these professionals know nothing either
@@StephenRBeet There’s some who do but… tiny minority.
Very beautiful sung by Gérard Barbeau, 💚💚💯👍👍👍💐
Excellent to see these videos. Did the transition to teaching head tone begin in England or on the continent?
I'll mention this in the next video.

A totally natural and effortless once the technique has been developed.

That's interedting. Can we contact him to add his name to the list of boys who sang and appeared on film?
Do you know who arranged for this to be recorded? Possibly Dudley Scholte, who arranged for off-air recordings of other Music Hall artists to be made, including Alice Lloyd, Marie's sister.
No, I found it in a record shop off Oxford Street about 30 years ago

Typos in your intro titles. 'Extensive' surely, and 1970s not 1970's
Just put there for you to check. In fact you are incorrect. It's 1970s' "of the 1970s" -genitive plural, if you want to be pedantic! But when you know the rules you can break them.
this is shite
I can still remember this as if it was yesterday: I sat in Holland in the living room with my mother, then on the radio they said; "the pope has died" We were in shock. I said stunned: they must have made a mistake, they talk about the former pope... But soon the reality kicked in. I am not a fanatical catholic but I loved this man. And still do. A humble and good man.

Thank you for this. It will take a lot to convince me that his death was not contrived so he wouldn't reveal the extent of the Vatican Bank's involvement in the Catholic Church global pedophile ring.
Interesting that the first report says he was found dead at his desk and then after that he was found in his bed with the reading lamp on!
