    Five years late and a bit long, but I don’t care. I’m gonna admit, I did not mind the first season of 13 Reasons Why when it first came out. And I say that as someone who was twelve going through an emo phase and was severely suicidal because of the trauma I had been through. I felt seen in this show at the time of its release (and sort of related to Hannah later on in the eighth grade when I went through similar experiences of slut shaming that Hannah went through that also caused me to attempt suicide myself, but I didn’t send out tapes or anything like that lmao). In fact, quite the opposite was done with me wanting to kill myself through watching Kate Walsh’s performance as Olivia Baker, because I saw my own mom in her, and knew I could not do what Hannah did to Olivia to my own mother. It was embarrassingly to the point where my friends and I got mad at our math teacher for informing us about our principal sending out emails on 13 Reasons Why’s negative impact that led to me sobbing about how the show understood me…yeah, not my finest or proudest moment that I like to talk about! That was that, second season was okay to me, and the third and fourth were guilty pleasures that annoyed the shit out of me. Never really had cared for Bojack Horseman, until a friend I had made in rehab at the time had annoyed me enough to watch it in 2022. I thought this show was just about some idiot who gets himself depressed after a failed Hollywood attempt, and that I’d be bored out of my mind. Instead, I unfortunately saw so much of myself in so many characters. Particularly both Bojack and Sarah Lynn. I had gotten clean after using substances for over a year after I had lost so many friends and the respect of teachers in the process, and could see the self-destruction through both characters, the narcissism and bad choices I made through Bojack, the unresolved trauma by needing attention through Sarah, and so many other things. The View From Halfway Down however, did something so incredible. I thought the scene where Olivia found Hannah was tear inducing enough for me to reconsider everything, but the scene where Bojack called Diane and asked where she was at broke me. I couldn’t stop sobbing for 20 minutes after that scene had played. In that moment after watching that scene, I realized I truly needed to stay sober and clean, or else I would end up with a similar fate as Bojack or Sarah Lynn. I realized I needed to become a better person, a better friend, and a better daughter. I realized I needed to be a completely different and sober person who was mentally healthy and stable, and all it took was that damn phone call. I have been two years clean since May 17th, 2022, and have changed my life for the absolute better, and I’m now thriving at college with a good 3.8 GPA for my freshman year. I still don’t mind the first season of 13 Reasons Why, as poorly aged as it is with its questionable message and morals. But does Bojack Horseman absolutely nail the message better and actually gives you a lesson that will stick with you for years to come? Absolutely. That show saved me in so many ways I can’t describe, and I cannot recommend it enough to anyone because of how accurate and gut wrenching it portrays the realistic side of addiction depression, self-destruction, and suicide. Genuinely one of the few shows to stick with me since watching it.

    I think the biggest meaningful difference between BH and 13RW is how death is portrayed: 13RW portray it as if it was a malleable state, Hannah still "appear" to some people as if she was a ghost, as if she wasn't gone at all, and it lighten the actual impact her death should have on people. In BH, death is death, it's terrifying, especially in the poem from Secreteriat, it show he actually wanted to live at the last minute, when it was too late... when a character die, they STAY dead, they don't reappear until Bojack's hallucination/dream, wich makes their deaths impactful with actual consequences! And also, that terrifying dark door representing death? "There's no other side, this is it."? THAT'S how you don't glamorize death. When you're gone, you're gone, and there's no coming back.

    I mean… when an animated show about an anthropomorphic horse is easier to relate to than a bunch of actual human kids in school, you gotta realize there’s something wrong with your show, it also goes to show that any stable person can relate to a well written character no matter what they look like

I started watching expecting it to be another dumb show to play in the background like Family Guy. It's the reason I waited til way after the show was concluded before I decided to watch it. • @xeoney
    @xeoney Před rokem

    Bojack Horseman shows all angles of depression, trauma and addiction. It doesn't glorify anything, or make it so he isn't at fault for anything and everyone loves and forgives him. He's an extremely flawed character that you're supposed to understand. You understand why he is the way he is, and you can feel bad for him, but you still understand the things he does are bad. It doesn't excuse his actions, it explains why he acts that way. It shows how much trauma can effect people, but that ultimately, you have control over the things you do and you have to take accountability. It never portrays anyone as the bad guy for not forgiving him, because it's understandable and fair. It's devastating to watch, but you understand everything and everyone. It makes sense and it's realistic.

    my mom is a very not strict person in the slightest , and when 13 reasons why came out when i was in middle school it became (and still remains) the only show i am not allowed to watch. because my mother was afraid that it glamorized the idea of suicide so much that it would make me want to. and honestly that’s probably true. after the show came out i noticed a sudden and overwhelming influx of girls in my middle school talking about “omg im literally so depressed” and “im literally gonna kill myself after this class” and don’t get me wrong if that show got people to speak out about the way that they were feeling, that’s great! but i can’t help but assume that those girls just wanted to be like the main character of their favorite show. and the next year when everyone forgot about that show, all the girls who were “suicidal” seemed to all be conveniently “cured” when school started again. and that was so harmful for my (then assumed to be bipolar, now bpd) little middle school brain. and i couldn’t comprehend how everyone just got better out of nowhere and i couldn’t. if that show was made to help people feel less alone in their feelings, it did the exact opposite for me.
