What's both funny and tragic about this scene, it really did happen. Vasily was in charge of the Air Force hockey team, VVS. The team was killed in a plane crash. Said crash occurred in 1950, whereas this scene implies it happened recently. Vasily tried to cover it up by replacing the team with newbies, and hoped his father didn't notice. Apparently Stalin did not notice, or didn't care as nothing came of it.

To be honest, if you read about Vasily he wasn't actually an obnoxious nepotism case, more like "my dad was quite literally a mass-murdering monster who drove my mother to suicide, my brother was killed in the War and I couldn't decide for myself that is why I turned to bottle" case

Tarasov was more like Vasily’s handler than anything else. At least, in the movie it appears that way. Poor Vasily…

It’s scary because it’s so close to the truth. Soviet Russia from Stalin onward was insane. There was brief respite under Gorbachev & Yeltsin, then back to Russians preferred mode of politics (dictatorship) with the slimy Putin. I have no idea why a nation with so many people keep opting for dictatorship rather than democracy?

Personally, I think this scene is part of why Javert reacts so strongly when he finds out the Mayor really IS Val Jean. He freaks out because Val Jean easily could’ve taken him out here. Destroyed his career, his life. Instead Val Jean comes clean to save an innocent man, which Javert can’t accept as being real. I think this moment was the actual start of Javert’s worldview collapsing in on him, being shown such mercy by a man he’d hunted. And it’s bookended when Val Jean spares him AGAIN at the barricade.

I doubt the real Zhukov would have done the "Shoot him. No, just fucking about" part. You don't fuck about about such things in a situation where someone could have taken the order at face value and instantly acted on it. A military has an authoritarian leadership structure where subordinates are supposed to shut up and obey orders, and the Soviet Union was more authoritarian than most states. This was a live situation where they were expected and required to be able to rapidly respond to how things develop.

Javert was born in a jail, surrounded by terrible possibly even violent people. It leads him to a rigid belief of judgment, that people are either good or bad based on their actions. He makes what he thinks is a mistake and so thinks this makes evil. The look on his face when Valjean forgives him immediately, such kindness is completely foreign to him. Genuinely quite a tragic character.

This movie is a master piece. All the actors were fantastic in this but Jason Issacs as Zhukov stole the show. The scene where he throws off his jacket is just sublime cinema.
