Can you explain why you coated the cane in Tung Oil please? I am in the UK and hand weave cane for a living. Split rattan needs to breath and have the ability to absorb moisture which it can't do if coated in oils or varnish. However, even though I've been caning for 40 years, I am watching your video because I've never done pressed cane before so I'm wondering if the tung oil has a purpose?
I used tung oil to enhance the color. I had never heard not to use finishes. I differ with you on this. Lots of manufactured furniture has a finish going back 100+ years. Lots of present-day furniture has a tinted lacquer finish. Wicker furniture has a finish, some painted.

The strap should be made different, without seeing this cut "white" sideline. in Europe (Netherlands) it´s nicely wrapped from both sites. Also we would fist put 1-2 cm hardfoam (polypress) on the seat-base, and after that 3 cm polyether-foam, this way you never feel anything from the hard coilstrings. BUT: The seat looks nice, good job !
I was unhappy with the white line and corrected it on straps since. That said, from viewing angles once the seat is on the bike and on the ground, it's not noticeable. As for your foam suggestions, I followed suit as closely as possible from the original construction without modifications.

Hello. I have two chairs that I would like to redo with a very low profile seat, like these. They don't have the tin parts (they were webbed in the past), so I don't know if I should make some out of tin or if there is a more commonly used material (like thin plywood ?) that would also work. If I use webbing, then the layers of stuffing, then my outer fabric, I can't figure out what I attach the fabric to if there is nothing to wrap around as you did with the tin seat. Initially the chairs had a very thin leather and then they were nailed all wround, with the nails very close to eachother. The wood on my chairs is pretty beat up from all those nails, so I worry about how well the nails can hold. Having a new ;layer of something thin, like the tin or thin wood, seems like it might help. Thank you!
These tin seats were highly unusual from my nearly 50 years experience. Sight unseen, it sounds as if your chairs originally had pressed-fiber seats, almost like cardboard with a tooled-leather embossing. For more information you can email hipster73@hotmail.com

If my can starts to break after wedging it into the groove, is it just bad quality material? I soaked it for over an hour in water
Products of nature are unpredictable. Adding glycerine to the water will slow drying time. I confess in my haste filming this, I broke a couple strands. It can be a serious problem in time.
Nice Job !! These visors are also use on 28/29 Model A Closed Cab Pickups. I have a reproduction visor frame for my truck. The frame is made entirely from flat steel stock and there is no provision for any tack strip. What would you recommend ??? Thank you.
I would try adding a tacking strip with contact cement. Gluing the entire cover in place would be an awful task. The waterproof panel boards hold a staple nicely. Good luck! Buck
@@Buckminsterupholstery Thanks for the reply. Please help me identify what you are referring to as "door panels" so I can get some of that material. As I said, this visor is simply a "flat stock framework that we needed to modify to make fit properly when we received it (many years ago) so there is no place provided for a tack strip. I would assume you would add the tack strip somewhere on the piece that screws up under the roof header piece ???
The same type of black waterproof "cardboard" the door panels are made of. Yes, attach the tacking strip in the same place I did. I replaced the original tacking strip when I recovered the visor many years ago.

I should have understood that. ;o( It's been years since I purchased my visor frame and it's currently covered with some black felt roofing paper as a "mock-up". I don't remember, however, it having that little" channel" that you showed on yours. All I remember is a rather thin maybe 1/2" wide flat stock with the little sheetmetal side and front pieces. I'll need to uncover mine and have a look. Thanks again for the replies.

That is a vinyl gimp I purchased over forty years ago, and hasn't been available for many years. I doubt I have enough to do another seat. I have a video showing use of carpet binding to make a similar trim.

That was definitley the most complicated upholstery job I've ever seen on CZcams. This after another video of a young woman using spray adhesive the glue fabric to a chair and "tucking in" the edges. Not that she declared it to be professional in any way! But this kinda cured me of having a go at it myself, LOL! Very cool to find a piece you had done when you started out as well!
Hi Buck, Pneumatic question… I see some pneumatic staple guns say they do not require oil, the clam to be oiless. Now is your air compressor oiless? Because then you will be getting it in the air. Or maybe you run a small pancake for the upholstery builds. Keep up the great videos. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Steven
This isn't an area of my expertise. I'm not familiar with oilless guns. No, my 21-gallon compressor has oil. I use a combination pressure control gauge/moisture trap in the airline. I've used the brown Duo-Fast stapler (seen in my videos) for over 45 years (with a 2-3 O-ring replacements). More video set for editing in coming weeks. Thanks for tuning in. Buck

Sorry, but I don't understand your question.
when you were completing the trim when applying a the nails to finish off the entire chair. You used a trim possibly 3/4” width, did you sew a seam on both top and bottom?
Gotcha. The trim I used was a manufactured 1/2" wide gimp purchased 35-40 years ago and no longer available (that I know of). Check out my video "How to make leather trimming" to see how you can use vinyl carpet binding as an alternative. Good luck. "Buck"
