Norfolk & Western 611 Steam In The Shenandoah Valley
The 9 hour drive was worth it, although she didn’t run on Saturday due to a broken stay bolt, she sure did one heck of a job on Friday and Saturday.
In this video the 611 covers track from Goshen Virginia to Staunton Virginia, this is part of the old North Mountain Subdivision on the C&O Railway, also holds one of the steepest grades on the C&O at a 2% climb, we cover those spots in this video, we tried to stay clear of all crossing(but of course not always possible) so y’all could hear this magnificent piece of 20th century equipment doing what they did best pulling long trains on steep grades

I have one of the Louisville and Nashville railroad spikes from 1950
I really wish TVRM would put that Crosby 3 chime on 630 and keep it on there. 630 needs to have a semi-permanent whistle, and the Crosby would be a great choice. After all, it was her original whistle on the Southern Railway.

The Crosby 3 chime would be a great example of an iconic whistle for 630, just like how the Princeton 3 chime is an iconic whistle for 4501!
My son and I loved watching this vide! We anticipated seeing the trains come out of the tunnels and approaching the road crossings. The editing, angles and camera work were all great! I’ve had to sit through some really boring train videos, so I’m glad we found your channel.

Why was 1702 running in night time on the way back home to Dillsboro
What's the whistle? Beautiful sound, especially echoing in the distance, and this engineer does a fine, straight-ahead job of quilling it, regular service style.
It’s actually the same whistle that the SR 4501 has but instead of brass, it’s made out of steel, and to add to that the engineer that was running in the video built that whistle himself.
@@SouthernRailFan8 Thanks, great info. The engineer gets a gold star! 4501's whistle is the standard SR freight 3-chime, always a beauty; maybe this copy's steel construction makes it just a bit edgier, but it's still sweet and expressive. Does it have a top lever like the original, or is that a weight support bracket? Couldn't see. Pleasant exhaust from 1702 also; ear candy all around!
@@howiesmith1504, while ur right with the 01 having a standard SR freight 3 chime, when she was assigned in Princeton, IN they took the whistle and modified it to have a higher pitch then the standard SR 3 chime. Pretty sure it was just a support bracket, I will go through some of my photos to see if I have any hood ones to check it out closer for u if u would like. And I agree all around the stack talk was very pleasing, nothing like a good S160 strutting her stuff.

I was told that the whistle in this video was actually a B&M 6 chime variant of the Nathan 6 chime.

I just wish 630 would keep that Crosby 3 chime whistle forever. It's a really pretty whistle. I don't really like the central of Georgia because to me it doesn't sound right and it would suit more bigger steam engines. But, great job on your videos so far. Keep up the good work.

Oh no that's surely a step top. Reading is one of the only railroads that had flat top sixers

New? 630 has carried a CofG 6 chime on and off since the 1980s, but it certainly is a lovely whistle.

Wasn't this whistle used on C&O 2716 when it was used by the Southern?
I love the one that 4501 had during excursions on the Southern railway not the one she has now.
It’s the same whistle, just modified slightly since her excursion career.
