      What is your view of the S9?

    • @tomCGNpics
      @tomCGNpics Před 5 dny

      @@mygoodstuffreviewedTo be honest I belong the the group of long time LUMIX users who are pretty disappointed as I (and many others) hoped for small camera but pretty different to the S9, a MFT photo centric body in GX or even GM design. And we all fear that the S9 is a clear statement that this will not gonna happen. But putting this beside a small FF hybrid cam would also be very interesting. But in the S9 I cannot see a practical concept, and not only for me my personally, generally speaking. It pretends to be small and handy but there are no appropriate small (LUMIX) lenses and they promote it directly with an extra grip. It pretends simplicity and to designed for beginners but it is to expensive for this or differentiates to others with advanced features like anamorphic features, vectorscope, waveform monitor,… which targeted people don‘t want. It pretends to be the everyday carry everywhere camera for every situation but it has only a digital shutter which makes photos in artificial light more complicated with its extra deflicker function. A mechanical shutter would make this much easier. And low light city night scenes should be one of the favourites situations for a small FF cam. It pretends to be a compact tool for quick video creation and instant publishing from „out in the field“. The LUT concept is interesting but most of the reviewers report that it is still to complex. For a flexible small video recording tool it lacks of a hotshoe connectivity to an attachable small microphone and a headphone jack. All other solutions will make the setup bigger and/or more complex, using a wirelessmic system or your smartphone for the audio recording. The DJI Osmo pocket, the small crop Sonys and the S5ii does not leave a big space. As long as there are no small (faster) L mount lenses the S9 does not really profit from the FF sensor in this competition. The lack of a viewfinder and the recording limits is not for everyone a real downside, and understandable compromises for a small body design, but considering the price, and the lack of small lenses, these are restrains for a wider user group. … again I think it is wrong to say that this is a matter of a personal opinion. It is a conclusion, not only mine, from people who not only think about their own but have the expertise in various workflows. But of course this can be discussed and we all would highly welcome a new user group looking for some kind of a dedicated camera in addition to the smartphone. But at the moment I do not have an idea about the workflows of this new content creator user group. I understand what a lot of people want to see in this camera but I doubt that it really delivers in comparison to the alternatives and looking at the price. The whole discussion about the marketing campaign is something different but also interesting.

    Beware! It turns out that most all of these Osmo Pocket 3 battery handles actually don't quite work. I'm finding out that while they work well ergonomically in giving you a longer handle to hold on to, they are not able to charge the camera faster than the camera drains it's internal battery. So far all the battery handle's not made by DJI only seem to slow down the drain of the internal battery and are not strong enough to stop the drain. In some cases the charging is so weak that your video time is almost the same as using only the internal battery. If you use the actual DJI battery handle it is actually strong enough to charge the internal battery to stop the drain. HOWEVER, it is true the actual DJI battery handle is more expensive than the other brands of battery handles. The non DJI branded battery handles are rated at over 4 times the capacity of the DJI battery handle and cost about half as much. So it makes it sound like a great deal. BUT in real world use the non DJI branded handles might only be able to give you 1/10th of its capacity before the internal Osmo Pocket 3 fully drains. So in the end some of the battery handles with 4 times the capacity end up being less effective than the lower capacity DJI branded battery handle. Would be nice if someone comes out with a battery handle with more capacity than the DJI branded battery handle that can actually charge as powerfully as the DJI branded battery handle. So far I have yet to find this.

    For marketing drama is good, because the worst would be a silience about S9. This drama is like as: "How dare the Panasonic release camera with limit in video?" or "Panasonic's users demand camera without any limit!" For me S9 is excelent travel camera, smaller, lighter that S5 II in pocket size. This camera was designed for fun, joy and stylish look, with a still big possibility in photo and video. Its not a profissional camera for doing work. Buying the S5ii/x and the G9ii just so you can talk to it sorta is a waste. I love Panasonic cameras, but the S9 has me mystified. Panasonic made too many design concessions in an attempt to make a full-frame camera what it can never be, a small camera given of the size of the lenses it needs. The 26mm manual focus lens with a fixed aperture size of F8, which is needed to actually make the S9 appear to be a small form-factor camera, is a joke. If I put my Panasonic/Leica 15mm F1.7 on a M43 Gx9, I will have an auto focus camera with better low light performance and a shallower depth of field than the full frame S9. (Did I mention the GX9 has an EVF?) Hard pass on the S9 and their cheap, plastic kit lens. Panasonic, update the GX9 with a better EVF and screen, use the G9 M2 sensor with its improved IBIS and its new hybrid autofocus system, and then you will have a near-perfect small form-factor camera.

    The negative feedback is not about a potentially 'meh' camera. It is about some YT 'reviewers' glossing over the severe limitations of a camera, it could be any camera, potentially misleading subscribers, particularly the young and novices, who trust their opinion on a £1,500+ purchase. I heard a story on another channel, from one of the people invited to the event, which, if true, would explain a lot. The S9 was not the camera that was supposed to be launched at the Japan event. The people invited (and their audiences) do not represent Panasonic's core target market for the S9. Presumably, something more photography, as opposed to novice videography, focused was going to be released. If true this would explain why the S9 was released prematurely with a joke lens rather than the non-joke lens which is due in a 'few months'. Btw the people who visited Japan got given the cameras on 'long term loan' which is a sleazy way for corporations to try and corrupt people, as all involved can say no-one was given any equipment for free.

    All good points gently made. For me the camera is a misfire. Too many compromises. If it’s for video it’s too limited in terms of time it can run and lack of mic port. For photos no mechanical shutter, no hotshoe are a deal breaker. LUTs is a nice idea in theory but I’d apply them later noot bake them in. I like its full frame. I wanted it to be an x100vi killer but its just not. At the price it is I’m really not sure who its for? Seems more like a solution in search of a problem than a good solution to a real problem. That is definitely one for the history books, although it can’t be as bad as the 39-80mm Sigma that I had about 40 years ago. That thing was trash - I ended up giving it away! You’ve mentioned mech shutter and no hot shoe as deal breakers. That’s one of the interesting things about this whole scenario. For some people those features mean nothing. They mean nothing to me - I don’t use them so I wouldn’t care that they’re not there. But for others they might be critical elements. Maybe they’ll fix the shortcomings in a MK ii version. As for the price, well it seems that all cameras are rising substantially in price. It’s just that this one seems a bit overpriced more than some of the others.

All the cons attributed to the S9 are not deals breakers for the targeted demographic which obviously is not professional filmmakers, neither professional wedding filmmaker, nor professional CZcamsr from the Photo/Video niche. The issue with Camera reviewer on CZcams is each new camera released should be their personal dreamed camera and if not, then it's not a good camera and people shouldn't bother looking at it or considering that camera. And this is wrong and needs to change. I saw a CZcamsr who reviewed the S9 in context of Professional Wedding filmmaker, like if Max Verstappen was reviewing a Tesla Cyber Truck, Toyota Camry, or Ford F350 then say, "this car doesn't have this and this and that so I cannot race the Miami Grand Prix with it, therefore it's a bad car!". I'm pretty sure those CZcamsr will find that totally absurd. As the same CZcamsrs like to say, Cameras are tools and none of them are perfect! But they're still looking for the perfect one with all their dreamed spec, because all cameras' users have the same needs as them, care about the same things in a camera as them or want the same user experience as them. The Viewfinder thing is an interesting one. Many of those people missing viewfinder have a SLR, or DSLR background. So, their muscle memories are already conditioned to use a viewfinder. Wondering when they take photo with their smartphone if they're also looking for or missing the viewfinder? maybe who knows! I’m not talking about all the influencers, and some of them, especially the veterans, had done a pretty good job. But some of the newer ones are so quick to dismiss the shortcomings of the camera. It’s like there’s no EVF, oh but I guess you don’t need it… There’s no mechanical shutter, oh the electrical shutter is just as good and you don’t need mechanical… oh there’s not hot shoe, you guessed it, you don’t need it. Some of the videos got really ugly IMO. For what it CAN do, I know it does it spectacularly, but if this camera is targeted at the beginners, as some influencers say that buyers buy it because of it’s simplicity and don’t care about all the features, well if they don’t care about it, why would they invest $1500 plus lenses to buy this FF camera in the first place when the iPhones of the past 2 years or an EV1 can do the same for much less? This logic contradicts itself. This camera has an identity crisis IMO, it’s like trying to compete with iPhone, 1” sensor cameras and ZVE1 at the same time. And if history teaches us anything, jack of all trades and master of none won’t yield any success. Because if you think about it, if you want the simplicity and small package, you’d probably use this with a small lens, and today’s iPhone an 1” sensor will probably do just as well for TikTok vertical videos. And for the more serious content creators, not having hot shoe for mic is probably a deal breaker for many (I mean even a phone can connect a microphone). If you want a small camera that is as small as the X100VI, the F8 manual lens is laughable (I’d however get the 35mm F1.7 instead), and no mechanical shutter? And if you’re more serious content creator, you wouldn’t even touch this camera as the ZVE1 and it’s sibling S5 will do a much better job for a few hundred bucks more, and when you take into the account the lenses you need to get, that few hundred becomes a smaller fraction of total spending. So I really don’t know who this camera is for, because if you ask any of those influencers if they will buy this as their first or only camera, 90% of them will say no. You have to overcome these shortcomings when making the purchasing decision, but many influencers are so quick to brush off these shortcomings which is irresponsible. I can understand the company only mentioning their strong features, but for influencers? It’s not acceptable, when the viewers rely on their opinions on making the purchases. This is 2024, not the 90’s when we make purchase decisions based on ads.

    Hello I just bought a sony dcs hx30v online this year I researched the camera and came across your video. It is amazing and I am excited to use the cam and follow your videos when the camera arrives.

    • @mygoodstuffreviewed
      @mygoodstuffreviewed Před 2 měsíci

      That's great - I hope you don't have to wait too long for delivery. I always hate the waiting part! I loved my HX30 back when I had it. Since then I've upgraded to much more expensive cameras, but that HX range of compact cameras was amazing. The quality is decent even now and you just can't beat how compact they are. The single biggest thing you can do to ensure great quality is make sure you have good light and plenty of it. You might want to think about buying some spare batteries too - if you start shooting a lot of video (or even a lot of photos) you'll be glad of at least one spare battery.

    • @mygoodstuffreviewed
      @mygoodstuffreviewed Před 2 měsíci

      I was surprised at how well it coped with bright and dull locations. Modern cameras can do better, of course, but the HX30 is a very solid performer. I think you’ll be pleased with it.

    Alas Viltrox didn't do anything to stand out. It loses to Nikkor 40/2 practically in every way, and now that Nikon lowered price to $226, even the price differential evaporated. I hope Viltrox learned the lesson, you can't compete on price alone, especially when it comes to already cheap lenses.

    • @mygoodstuffreviewed
      @mygoodstuffreviewed Před 3 měsíci

      That's interesting - I didn't know the Nikon price had lowered - is that just a sale price? Or response to Viltrox? Have you tested them against each other? I'd be interested to hear what differences you've found between them.

    • @USGrant21st
      @USGrant21st Před 3 měsíci

      @@mygoodstuffreviewed yes, I had both. I returned Viltrox as I didn't find a reason to keep it. Nikon pretty much wins in every category. I tested with corresponding profiles applied in Lightroom, didn't try w/o profiles. I wasn't sure about the resolution, first it seemed that Viltrox might have an edge, but after shooting test chart I think they are pretty close not to matter. I have Z6ii, perhaps Z7 would reveal more differences. I think Viltrox bokeh is its weakest point, sometimes it's ugly, and especially at the edges. AF speed as one would expect is better with Nikkor.

      Thank you. And it’s definitely comfortable. I’m using the Osmo a lot for shooting product reviews and personal vlogs so the extra battery life is very convenient for me. When I do street photography in London next time I’m there I’ll probably be using this set up to film what I’m doing, showing some of the better spots for street photography. Since I’ll be away from home and chargers for the day this battery handle will be invaluable.

    • @PeterSu
      @PeterSu Před 3 měsíci

      I know you said 2 full charges, do you mind sharing how many hours it goes for? Also does it stand solidly on the tripod at that height or is it a bit tenuous like it might tip over?

    • @mygoodstuffreviewed
      @mygoodstuffreviewed Před 3 měsíci

      @PeterSu I’ll run it continuously as a test to see what the maximum run time is. Should be able to let you know tomorrow. And standing just with this handle would not be as stable as I’d want. It’s top heavy so I’d either hold it, or use a tripod. You *could* stand it up, but a slight knock would tip it over. I wouldn’t take that risk myself. Using the little tripod that comes in the creator kit would be ok. Doesn’t have to be a big tripod.

    • @PeterSu
      @PeterSu Před 3 měsíci

      Got it got it thanks. I read an ad that says it takes 32 min to charge the 4000mah battery to give 2 hours but it's a bit odd since I also read the normal battery 1300mah extender gives 1 to 2 hours more or up to 62% more for the up to 166 min normal batter life. I guess it all about works out and looks like it's an additional 2 hours of life. Ah I see so sounds like putting on a tripod and being careful is the way to go - thanks.

    • @mygoodstuffreviewed
      @mygoodstuffreviewed Před 3 měsíci

      @PeterSu I’d take figures as a rough guide rather than exact, but once I’ve had it running with the Osmo and the handle both fully charged I’ll have a reasonable idea of actual shooting time.

    • @mygoodstuffreviewed

      I no longer have the camera, but when I did the corrections I had to keep trying different numbers then take another test photo to see which setting worked best. As far as I know there’s no magic way to determine the correct setting without trial and error. I think there may be some software that can help, but I’ve never used it and I’m not sure what it’s called.

      I pressed the menu button and kept it held down, then pressed the power on button. Is it possible that you're letting go of the menu button too early? I only let go when I saw the firmware update menu appear. Try that and let me know how you get on. I've been thinking about the zone focus addition and I kind of think it will be useful for me now, with some of the things I'll be doing in the future. Thanks for the review of the PGYTECH CreateMate! I hear you on the size and price being a bit high for casual users, but for someone like me who shoots landscapes and needs to stay organized on the go, it seems like a perfect fit. Carrying separate readers and cases can be a pain, especially when I'm out in the field. The CreateMate combines storage and reading in one go, keeping everything neat and tidy. Plus, the IP54 protection gives me peace of mind knowing my precious photos are safe from dust, splashes, or the occasional bump. True, the cost might be a bit steeper than basic card readers, which often lack storage and any real protection. But for professionals or enthusiasts who rely on their data, the convenience, protection, and speed are worth it. That blazing-fast data transfer (up to 10Gbps) with USB 3.2 Gen2 is a game-changer when working with massive RAW files. Plus, the wide compatibility with CFexpress, CFast, SD, MicroSD, and Nano SIM cards makes it a super versatile tool. The future-proof design with SD 4.0 and CFexpress support is another plus, and the reserved power interface hints at exciting future possibilities. While the size might seem bulky to some, I think the trade-off for all the features is fair. Definitely entering the giveaway! It might not be for everyone, but for someone like me who prioritizes portability, organization, and card protection, it seems like a valuable gadget!

      You make some excellent points about the *weather protection* . For my personal needs it's a bit overkill, but I can see that it really depends on the individual's needs. If I'm totally honest I'm actually a bit disorganised anyway! I should really be a bit more proactive
