Light years ahead of the Sugababes version.
The original Sugababes version is practically identical to this original Girls On Top single. Richard X produced it for the Sugababes at their request. What you might be hearing is that getting cold feet the label the the rawness of the whole thing (what attracted them in the first place) added a heavier drum loop on top of the final mix unbeknownst to Richard X - by this time the music video had already been shot which had the original mix on it and the director refused to put the overdubbed version on the edit so you will hear the video has a different mix to the "official" single release.
@@relativenormality Not identical. The original is better, from The You Got Good Taste intro, the rawness, edge, plus the l Freak Like Me part is not a weak cover version...

My pleasure, chief! I first heard it on Norman Cook's "All Back To Mine" compilation and had to have the Alan Tew LP on wax - it's not an expensive LP either. A few clunkers on there but for an early-70s 'easy listening' album it's worth picking up for this alone and some of the other tracks are cool too. Tew was a fabulous arranger and always knew 'da funk' - thanks for your kind comment! 😃

I may be wrong, but I think this is the 2003 vinyl version of the 1979 Elton John/Clive Franks remix of the 1977 Thom Bell album mix - with The Spinners vocals removed and replaced by Elton's. This vinyl version shaves off about 45 seconds from the original remix of 8:30 - probably just an early fade-out. Still great though.
Thanks for the comment, Michael and I think you're correct: this release on Skint Records out of Brighton is definitely a 'slight re-edit'; remains my favourite mix if only for the extended percussive breakdown! Brilliant tune.
