The spiral is one of the most common patterns used by many cultures all over the world. Also who says it isn't a simplified version of a different pattern. There are curved and circular patterns in Maori are. Why look on the other side of the world to identify them? The only reason I can think of is if you are desperately trying to make a spurious link between the Maori and early Irish cultures. As for the design of the boats, they strongly resemble traditional Maori ones.

Awesome, John Tere'moana Green, I am a descendant of the Maori, and Tahitian descent, and I was born and raised in Hawaii, and know much about the Hawaiians and the Tahitians, I have been researching more over the years about the Maori and the stories that were past down to me over many many generations. My uncle from Tahiti worked on the Kon Tiki exploration and he was also on the RA expedition. From that, I heard that the Muslim and the Vikings may have been to New Zealand long before the Maori. I heard some of the Maori have those genes in their blood. The RA expedition was out to prove that the Muslim and Vikings. I like to find out more about the truth of the Maori. I have been living in Southern California for the rest of my life now and moved to far Humboldt County and I have seem much of the Polynesian connection with the Chumash in the South, and I see a strong resemblance to the Northern Coastal Indigenous People, The Tolowa Dee-Ni coastal tribe look almost identical with the facial tatoos and the tribal wear, and their fishing technics. The Chumash tribe is the same thing. The word Chumash means the Panel Boat people, these tribes to the north and the south have almost the exact same canoes that paneled that the Polynesian have been classified as the first builders of such a higher lever of ocean fairing craft. My grandfather is from New Zealand Maori Scottish mix. My mother is from Tahiti and my grand mother married my Maori grandfather and it was a dowery. My grandfather built all the roads, and he built the largest shipping hub that internationally known as the Cowan Enterprise. It was originally the McCowan enterprise.
