FORUM: Beyond the Pages | Sara Echenique
In our latest season of "FORUM: Beyond the Pages," children’s author Sara Echenique speaks about her recent book "Our Roof is Blue."
Every Spring, the Library of Congress calls on each state and territory’s “Center for the Book” to select a pair of titles that best represent their homeland. Then, the chosen books are featured at the annual National Book Festival in Washington D.C.
As Florida’s Center for the Book, Florida Humanities selected two titles that recently received honors at this year’s Florida Book Awards. One of those books was Sara Echenique’s children’s book "Our Roof is Blue"-a heartfelt story about two siblings who work to recover and rebuild after Hurricane Maria destroyed their home in Puerto Rico.
As Echenique discusses in this episode, the story is her attempt to speak to the trauma a child might experience after surviving a natural disaster.

    The other relevant myth besides Babel is Icarus. His father (not he) devised superior technology (wings) to escape servitude in Crete, but Icarus ignored his father's warnings, flew too close to the sun, and the wax melted from the wings, plunging him into the Mediterranean. SOME people have always known that improved technology also enables hubris, and humans being what they are, the hubris makes the technology an agent of destruction.

    Strange Fruit Still From days of enslavement to mass incarceration, Don’t tell me the fallacy about a glorious Emancipation, In this day and age, no one could make me believe. We’d still witness the strangest fruit hanging with blood-stained leaves. From the Learning Trees to the back of the bus Has someone again declared “Open Season” on all of us? What about that legal protection known as due process It’s an elusive dream for the strange fruit that I must confess. Can Congress pass a law that will legalize our Black skin? If not, the lynching will continue because of this genetic sin. Be it North, South, East, or West; you count the figures, Black bodies are constantly murdered by all sorts of triggers. Disregard the fabricated, contradicting, or trite pretext, The only concern is will I or a loved one be next. The smell of blood lingers heavily in our nation’s air. And those same lynching trees prohibit you to stare, From hooded individuals who terrorized the peaceful night To the other types who left Blacks no choice but to take flight, Yes, we are a strange fruit hanging for all to curse or hate, In this day and time, this remains our unfortunate fate. A simple traffic stop could result in our dying, Listen closely to the wind; you’ll hear another Black mother crying. It is scenarios like these for people worldwide to see, Reminding everyone of the strange fruits hanging from that Southern tree. By Lakeith Amir-Sharif

    Randy White validated my adventures growing up adjacent largely untouched oak and pine hammocks and mangroves. My youthful (mis)adventures in the spoil islands of The Narrows seemed all too familiar to Randy, as expressed by the familiar characters that are Doc Ford and Tomlinson. White validao my Tom Sawyer/Huck Finn upbringing in this most amazing of natural environments. I would find myself inexorably drawn to Joseph Conrad’s adventurous sea tales. I found Conrad’s understanding of the malleable human spirit a fitting metaphor for my conflicted college years. Conrad is one of the few Florida Great Ones. His works and his spirit capture what it means to live and grow within the incredible environment that surrounds, never fully acclimating to the sometimes bourgeois demands of suburban life. If I could meet just one person… it would certainly be Randy Wayne White.

    For American society to hold together, the citizens need to treat the Declaration of Independence and Constitution as the "bible" of our country, as reflecting the bedrock shared value. And we need to understand the history of how and why these documents came into being - American and world history - so that we don't need a Pearl Harbor or 9/11 to remind us of the benefits of these values.

    • @jakelilevjen9766
      @jakelilevjen9766 Před 5 měsíci

      I think that is one possible approach. However, I also believe there are a lot of systems built into our Constitution which were political concessions made so that all of the States would sign. My concern is that holding up the Constitution as a holy document can make it seem as though changing it is heresy, despite the fact that Article V provides the very framework for doing so (a framework which makes it almost impossible to make meaningful changes, but at least it is a framework).

And yet, we felt the need to specify that citizenship shall not be limited by race or religion. 🤷‍♂️

    I am from the Senegambia region (Senegal and Gambia to be exact). On my father's side, she is my 3rd cousin 5 times removed. I have spent over 30 years documenting our family history and genealogy, taking over from my late uncle (a renowed Gambian historian, author, nationalist during the colonial era, pan-Africanist, and statesman) who has been doing it for 60 years, and years before his death, passed on the baton to me as he got older. I have more information about Anta Majigeen Njie including her father, mother, brothers, sister, and info surrounding her enslavement. I live in London but visit Gambia and Senegal at least 3 times a year, and it is my intention to one day visit her grave in the US and pay my respects and perform the rituals she would have been used to before her enslavement and Christianisation. She was a noble on both her father and mother's line. She is not some distant figure in a foreign land. She is my blood, and the paternal aunt (what we call "bajen" in Senegambia) of my father's great grandmother. Although Daniel Schafer did a great job in the biography of Anta, most of the research is centred around the US and Senegal. The research was not extended to The Gambia. During her time, there was no such thing as the modern day countries of Gambia and Senegal. Our ancestors lived in kingdoms and empires, and the modern day country of Gambia is right inside the modern day country of Senegal. Had Daniel extended the research to the Gambian branch of the family, more information about Anta would have come light that you would not find in Daniel's book. I come from the Joof family, and the current guardian of our family's heritage, and the curator of our private family's archive, which includes various branches of our family such as the Njie, Samba, Nyang, Chune/Thioune, Mbooj, and Mbaye families, etc. The Joof family (who were ethnically Seereer), is much older than the Njie family - specifically Njaajaan Njie (founder of the Jolof Empire, to whom Anta trace direct paternal descent) - by at least 400 years. Some of the early patriarchs of the Joof family includes Ama Kodu Joof (aka Ama Godomaat - who lived in November 1087), Laman Jegaan Joof (11th century, who was a "Laman" - the land owning families), Ndaah Njemeh Joof (King of Laah, 1290). Njaajaan Njie only existed in 1350. All these noble Senegambian families are interralated and used to marry off their daughters and sons to each other. Our family tree has well over 5000 people - streching from the old Kingdoms of Siin, Saluum, Baol, Jolof, Kajoor, and Waalo. Daniel's research should have been extended to The Gambia, as well as to the old Seereer families in both Senegal and Gambia, from whom most of the sources regarding the legendary Njaajaan Njie came from, and even the Wolof themselves (as supported by multiple sources) claim that most of their knowledge of Njaajaan Njie came from Seereer sources. I appreciate why Daniel's research in Senegal focused mainly in Jolof, and Yang Yang to be specific, because that's where Anta originated from. However, her relatives streches verse territories. Her mother for instance, was not actually from Jolof in origin.
