Farther away from this, tank units are on high alert, crews jumping into their vehicles and starting engines, revving into vast empty fields and anticipating Panzer I's and II's to arrive as they look through their hatches, vision ports, and binoculars, reporting into standard radio sets in expectation of upcoming enemy contact. Some of the tanks are dug-in, others are standing in the tree-lines or hiding within seemingly endless hilltops and fields of wheat. On the runways, pilots sprint to their aircraft, lines of which reverberate as the fighters start engines and move to taxiways, preparing to take off and meet already present Luftwaffe aircraft spying the border, with orders to shoot them down. At the same time, PZL.49B medium bombers stand by for their own orders, preparing to conduct counter-bombing raids the moment war breaks out. At firearm factories, the last remaining needed few Kb. Wz.29 bolt-action carbines, Ckm. Everyone within the Polish Army is to assume and expect the worst, especially the scenario that Britain and France will not arrive and help, so thus the strategy relies on standing ground and making the land an absolute nightmare for the enemy to try to conquer. At every city, every port, every major road, bridge and railway tunnel, everyone is to defend every single inch of ground to the end. Everywhere near the border you looked, it seemed like every crossing, every objective and target of the Germans was rigged to blow even if reached first, and with no major Polish Army units being present but the very sizeable Polish Border Guard, having orders to stay behind and let nothing past, while fighting as they promised. Prior to this, Sikorski was making a speech out to the people of Warsaw and people of the country, not just the civilians, but also soldiers, policemen, and the working class of every profession. Fanaticism among them ran high, in particular, the Marshal told them that those who are able will soon too all be soldiers, being told to take their outside enemy as nothing else than a hybrid mass of rolling occupation, coming for their land, their cities, and people. Everyone knows their duty, so no weakness must be shown towards the average Wehrmacht soldier, and told only to treat prisoners of war nicely, but not the average combatant who will participate in committing the worst acts on their land, willingly or not. In the capital and every other major city, civilians, assisted by military mobilized troops, reserve conscripts and engineers are digging dirt rings and rows of trenches, machine gun nests and taking apart sections of road for them, as well as setting up additional anti-aircraft gun posts within the urban areas to add to the already existing and currently operating rings of air defenses within the cities, towns and even villages across Poland. At the Polish coastline, surrounding the port cities of Gdańsk, Gdynia, Sopot, as well as several vital buildings within them such as the Gdańsk post office to hold out for rescue until the Pomeranian Army sweeps in and saves them, together with fortification networks and fortresses at the strategic peninsulas of Westerplatte and Hel shoal, the Polish Naval Aviation scrambles from it's main airbases and camouflaged airfields, patrolling the skies for any intrusion and preparing to inflict maximum damage to any approaching Kriegsmarine naval assets in the area from day to night, flying fighter-interceptors and most importantly PZL.46 light bombers equipped with bombs and torpedoes. At night before 04 48 AM, a lone Polish submarine stealthily shadows an old pre-dreadnought battleship SMS Schleswig-Holstein, which was on a "courtesy visit" into the port of Gdańsk, stopping itself with guns seemingly pointed at the direction where the Polish garrison at Westerplatte was supposed to be. Knowing that something stinks, a special shallow-water torpedo is rammed to be prepared to fire in case the lone German ship does something out of mind. Despite all these measures, Germany still underestimates the Polish, with the Germans only believing their own propaganda and expecting the Polish Army to collapse easily before them, but despite trusting their estimates, additional forces were also moved into the area as a backup. The Soviets, still had yet to see how the real Polish Army would perform against the Germans, so they would halt their own invasion at least for now, but even if Poland did fight back and thus cause the Soviets to reconsider invading, the Soviets are still incompetent enough to try. Out on railways, Polish armored trains and supply trains move out across the vast and expansive railroad network, added with camouflaging nets, anti-aircraft guns and supply stations to allow the Armored Train Battalions of the Polish Armored Train Forces to operate unimpeded in their powerful Ti3-type armored locomotives.
