I was trained as a scientist and have a decent understanding of parametric statistics. If anyone has a link that statistically demonstrates differences in performance of ANY make of choke over another, please post. There are too many variable involved to enable a supportable analysis. Muller chokes are good, but no better than Rhino, Briley, Carlsons, Trulock etc. And what criteria would you use to determine the “best”? A two dimensional picture of a three dimensional phenomenon (the shot CLOUD) is almost worthless.

My instructions from my Clymer screw in choke tubes gives a minimum of .010 wall thickness over the .814 diameter of the 12 gauge choke tap. I never did one that thin as I felt they were dangerous. I've not done one of those in over 20 years due to the introduction of steel shot. The end of the barrel would leave with the wad. Steel shot was a game changer. I made my own choke tubes for my Browning BPS 10 ga that I got when they first came out. Faster and bigger was the only answer for steel shot and water fowl. I also made a scope mount for the BPS 10 ga and mounted a pistol scope on it for turkeys. It works well.

I have a question for the next one: It's fairly common for different shotgun manufacturers to produce shotguns that are overbored for their nominal gauge. What are the practical differences, if any, and if so, what kind of considerations would the hunter/sportsman need to take into account when selecting loads and chokes for them?

Not sure if you put any credit into what Jack Oconner wrote in his 1964 book on shotguns, he talked with all of the major shell manufactures and game hunters. "At that time" they noticed a big difference in patterns between high and low brass. The high brass was made mostly for hunting loads with 6 pedal crimps. They didn't pattern as well. Now I know there has been advancements in plastic and wads, but the originals are still around. The powders could have changed, screw in chokes, changes in velocity etc. I personally spend a lot of time at the pattern board. Swapping chokes from lower to upper barrel changes the pattern. Same load can blow out or severely open up with just .001 difference in bore diameter. I have yet to buy your chokes, because I had already upgraded before learning of them. But every one that I shoot with that has yours love them. Some have tried a lot of chokes over the years in one gun and say yours pattern the best.

I think he means that when all the innards (including the basewad) of two shells are the same the brass doesn't matter. That is, the internal volume and geometry needs to be the same. This is more relevant to handloaders, as we have the option of brass height when buying any given brand of hull. That is, if I have 2 identical Cheddite brand hulls, the only difference being the height of the brass, will preform the same if loaded identically. Often when you buy a load from the store the innards of a "hi brass" and a "low brass" load are not the same (even if the hull geometry is), thus you will get different patterns (simply because it is a different load). Way back in the day of paper hulls, there was a difference based on the brass. The height was increased to prevent pinholes from being burned through the paper (and leaking gas) in high pressure loads. This is not necessary anymore because the plastic does not burn through. This is supported by Lyman's 5th edition shot shell loading manual (2007) and other handloading manuals.

Obviously there is a reason why we don't use #7 steel shot size on giant Canada geese at 40 yds, even though steel #7 shot size has more pellets than steel BB shot size pellets.

Hello Mike obviously, at some point it comes to common sense after a while… There's no reason to list all of that technical information because it becomes almost infinite babble… Use basic knowledge, I have already posted in many videos about shots size and distances. You can just google and you'll know what shot sizes work at what distances… for example I do not use steel number seven past twenty five yards due to light weight. However in the right circumstances with the right load and the right Choke and the right game or target I could push that distance further.

The information presented in this video is neither clear, concise, nor "obvious" in relation to the aforementioned details. Quotes like "steel is king..." is very misleading and ignores discussion of other technical data required to provide clear analysis. This video and line of logic does not convey knowledge and understanding of the topic necessary to explain the details of shotgun shell load and ballistics. Steel loads are 1,650 fps... Lead distance depends on the distance to the bird, as well as the speed of the bird, so it is always changing. I have lead a cruising mallard 10 feet and it folded just like it was supposed to. Others that looked like they had a jet pack up their fanny required a 30 foot lead, or further! @@Unknown1-111 if I were shooting birds at 25 yards, I would be shooting a different gun and choke. I shoot the Muller UFO Waterfowl tube because the only places I have to waterfowl hunt consists of nothing but pass shooting opportunities. I have to take shots @ 50-60 yards, or else I don't hunt. I would love to have decoys and places to hunt to where I never had to shoot a bird past 30 yards, but that's just not the case! So at least for me, considering limited resources and such, it's either pass shooting or stay at home and don't hunt. I manage to kill 75-100 ducks a season, and about half that many greater Canada geese, so I really have no complaints.
