Norfolk Broads: Ludham Bridge, idiot with boat crashes
While on holidaying on the Norfolk Broads an idiot hit my boat twice quite hard this video is of him trying to get his boat under Ludham Bridge a few second after hitting my boat.
Oh and he never apologised he just tried to shoot off down river.
Some people should just not be behind the wheel of a boat I'd hate to see what he's like in a car.

    Me and a friend are actually on the Melody 2 at the moment. It's a nice boat put due to the wind and rain we had a little bump coming through Ludham Bridge. We were going very slow under it so it was not anything terrible but it is definitely a bit wider than the boats we have has before as we have had no problem getting under there in the past. Saying that after watching this video, we did no where near as bad as these guys.

    • @cougar02000
      @cougar02000 Před 3 lety

      You've got an excuse for bumping the bridge, Ludham is tight anyway and should alway be taken slowly which is what you did but what made it difficult was the wind in windy weather a boat can be difficult to steer or moor as there is a large side area which acts a sail pushing you in any direction but the one you want to go. As for those guys on Melody no one else can be that bad even my dog has got a better idea of steering a boat than that lot!

    As some of the comments below, just don't rush, as has been said boats do not handle like cars,, one tip I was given many years ago, was just keep your eyes on where you want to be, dont try to go in a straight line as they say go with the flow, that may be the bend in the river, going under a bridge or between other boats, or docking, and remember you pilot a boat or the right hand side of a river, and you don't park it, you moor it! LOL We eventually bought a cruiser on the Suffolk Broads and had many happy times aboard.

      @cougar02000 Před 5 lety

      Don't worry about it, it's a great holiday just take your time remember it's not a car and boat don't handle like cars they pivot from them middle so be aware of the rear swinging when manoeuvring and everything is in slow motion compared to driving a car , When mooring take your time come in very slowly and into the current it's not a race use use reverse gear as a brake to stop or slow the boat, if your back end it out in the river turn the wheel fully to the centre of the river and give it some forward throttle this will pull the back in if you start moving forward use reverse to stop it moving. Don't do as I saw some one last year trying to reverse in to a mooring spot it doesn't work go in forward there's very little steering if any in reverse. Other than that have a good holiday don't get too stressed you'll soon get the hang of it especially if you listen to what they tell you at the boat yard just take your time oh and if you do get stressed there's plenty of pubs to help you wind down. Being on a boat is just like being on the roads you've got to allow for the idiots.

      Lord Eden: Well if you're calling anyone an idiot you should call the broads authority's idiots I was in a designated mooring area complete with markings on the quay. Oh and It wasn't all that close the the bridge that is just an effect of the camera zoom making it look closer that it really was, we were at least 25 metres away, don't believe me look at the area on google earth then you'll realise how far away from the bridge we were and how wide the river really is there it's about 30 metres even allowing for boats moored on the other side of the river that still leaves well over 20 metres so if you can't get a 3 metre wide boat down that you shouldn't be behind the wheel.of a boat.

    • @lordeden2732
      @lordeden2732 Před 7 lety

      Well you don't have to moor so close so YEs that does make you an idiot! You stated for once correctly it's a designated mooring spot and as with road speed limit signs you do have to drive right up to the limit if it's not safe to do so just like you don't moor so close to bridges knowing that some boat owners as well as hires are incapable of knowing if their craft will clear bridges at the time of the attemp . So logically will go astern to clear the bridge putting any boat SO Close in line of fire so to speak. I have sailed the Broads and other waterways around the world and by taking proper precautions have avoided your problems.

    • @cougar02000
      @cougar02000 Před 7 lety

      It would seem you're ignorant of the fact that the boat in question would easily pass under the bridge with plenty of clearance which is exactly what happened when they let the current take the boat. The reason they hit the bridge is they had no idea how to handle a boat and that is the reason they hit me and another boat before hitting the bridge.

    Without these boat hirers the rivers and canals will deteriorate and no maintenance will be afforded. The money that is generated by people hiring boats are the only persons that are contributing for such maintenance. Boat owners are not contributing any money except mooring space. These owners should be charged for leaving their boats moored for a whole year taking and minimizing mooring space. Locals and boat owners should be more helpful to these hirers in Norfolk broads and not be selfish. Just remember that hirers are reducing in the Norfolk broads because of these selfish boat owners and moving to France or Germany where people are more helpful.

      the same go's for over here in the netherlands. Lots of germans that come over an hire a boat. They want to see all of the canals so they allways go full speed. And most of those companys just tell them the controls and then they are off. But there is a change happening. There is a guy here that has started a company that calls himself something like boating school north netherlands. And he actually do's a proper training of the people that rent boats. So a rental company can call him and he comes over and gives the new renters a proper training. And i think it will pay off for the companys too. If they make less damage to their rental boats it will be cheaper to keep them running and insurance might go down too. So that means end of the day that boat training guy will pay for him self. But then you still have the problem of the idiots that have a boat for just 1 week and they want to see everything in just 1 week. That means that they go everywhere flatout.

      We've been holidaying on the Broads for some years now and from my experience most of the boats handle similarly. On the day this Idiot hit us the weather was very warm and calm not a breath of wind so he couldn't blame that on the wind he just seemed to have no idea that boats seem to have a slight delay on the steering which if you're not aware of it will cause you to make even more steering input thereby over steering which is what he did when he hit us and then the bridge, boats as he found out do not handle like cars. You mention your boat being a nightmare in the wind all the boats are the same they have a large side area which mean if you have a crosswind it will push you towards the bank or over the other side of the river, wind especially a cross wind can make mooring difficult and casting off a nightmare.
