Up bright and early this morning for the short trip across to Lostwithiel with my camera. Street Photography in Tavistock, Devon.

Over the past few months my interest has grown in the genre of street photography. I've tried this style of photography at various times in the past but, like most beginners, I always felt a little bit uncomfortable shooting people out on the streets. So, I've challenged myself to work at street photography during 2023 and see if I can overcome my fears and produce some acceptable street images...

Mad Dogs and Englishmen... Photography in the middle of the day.

In the words of the old song, written and performed by Noel Coward, only ‘Mad Dogs and Englishmen go out in the Midday Sun’. Well… That’s exactly what I did today! Armed with my camera gear, I ventured up onto Bodmin Moor in the middle of the day in fierce sunlight. This is generally considered the worst possible conditions for any landscape photographer to go out shooting in. The favoured time...

In today's video I take the short drive across to Colliford Lake to try and capture an image I've been after for a long time. Following the completion of Colliford Dam in 1983, water levels rose significantly to form the lake which now covers an area of around 900 acres. Occasionally, when the water levels get low enough, lots of artifacts get uncovered. These include old cart tracks and the re...

I love that time of day, so clean and fresh.
Best time of the day. Thank you so much for watching! 😊
Lovely place. I found it last year & have visited the place about 10 times since including today. It's so tranquil & beautiful
It really is a beautiful location. I often visit it and love the peacefulness there. Great for macro work! Thank you for your comment!
Hudson~Like it-useful !
Thank you! 😊
Hi Hudson 👋 ! Thanks for this, a lovely little tour of Tavistock ! A good balance of interesting video and your excellent still photography, I enjoyed this combination👍 ! With my ‘walking videos’ I started out by using the tiny ‘DJI Pocket 2’, very discrete and smooth! I try not to get too close to others, kept moving and maintained a disarming little smile 😊 ( the latter was probably a bad ides 😅). I now use a slightly bigger rig, the same camera with a battery pack and mobile phone mounted as viewfinder ! So far I have never been challenged, just the occasional friendly question about the camera setup 📸? I look forward to following more of your street photography 👀 !! Cheers, Don
Thanks Don. It sure is challenging trying to do video and stills together. Enjoyable though! :)
Bluebell with morning dew - stunning!
Thank you Robert! Appreciate your comment! I've never found bluebells all that easy to photograph.

Love the fence post - nature reclaiming its own. I absolutely agree with you about how going out without preconceived images in mind is so liberating - it's giving yourself permission to see what's there that you would otherwise miss.
Very well put Robert. Thanks for your comment!
Outdoor macro photography is an absolute exercise in mindfulness, because even the slightest hint of breeze will change the composition from what you originally had in your mind's eye. Loved the unfurling fern - that was just so sharp and so delicate at the same time. Love your presentation style - you are so relaxed that I feel like I'm right there with you on your little adventures. Keep right on doing exactly what you are doing.
Kind words indeed Robert. Thank you so much!
Beautiful and creepy, the final shot looked so much like antlers
Thanks again Hudson, Stara Woods is a great location. A good demonstration and very successful photographs 😊. Cheers 👋
Thanks Don!
Hi Hudson ! Thanks for this most pleasant moorland hike. Berry Down, a beautiful gentle landscape, great shots along the way. Glad you survived the big heat 🥵👍. Cheers, Don
Thanks Don!
Such a relaxing film Hudson. I must walk Berry and Mutton Downs sometime. One of those places I often drive close by but never stop.
Berry Down is a fairly gentle, relaxed walk. It was SO hot yesterday that I didn't fancy anything too taxing. Fortunately there was quite a breeze blowing which helped keep me relatively cool. It did kinda spoil the audio recording though. Glad you enjoyed the video Rog!
I love the golden beech life Hudson. Loving the wobbly bridge too x
Thank you so much Ingrid! x
Love Stara Woodland - always peaceful and the waterfall on Shales Brook is beautiful.
Thanks for the comment Rog. Is the waterfall on Shales Brook up beyond the suspension bridge?
@@Hudson_Swan Yes Hudson, when the path starts to climb away from the Lynher, there's almost immediately a path off to the right which follows Shales Brook, a tributary of the Lynher. It follows the brook on the left bank and you eventually come to a dead end where the waterfall is. About 100 yards before the dead end you can cross the brook at a shallow point to the other bank and get better access to the waterfall and to a couple of smaller ones above it. The last time I went there was a tree down blocking the path earlier along so you were forced to climb down a bank and cross sooner. In this weather, the pool at the foot of the waterfall would make an ideal plunge pool :-)
@@screamingjoe63 Thank you Rog. Appreciate your help and support! I'll check that out!
My absolute favourite stretch of riverbank. Your shots capturing the moss' colour are just beautiful. The wobbly bridge gets me every time... especially with evil kids bouncing either end!
Thanks for the comment Tracy! It's a beautiful location! My heart was in my mouth crossing that bridge!
Thanks for sharing !!!
My pleasure! I hope you enjoyed watching Aurelio.
Great video Hudson. 😍
Thanks for the comment Colin. It's a lovely spot for a quiet walk.
I went here yesterday. Very beautiful place
Thanks for your comment! I'll definitely be going back. Early morning, with mist, would be ideal! 👍
🥰😍😍😍🥰🥰🥰Very Good 👍 🥰 😍
Thank you! :)
Glad you enjoyed it, it's a beautiful river
I did Tracy, but I think I started from the wrong location??
Hi Hudson, thanks, great shots, good compositions and exposures, all combined with a lovely walk by the River Lynher. Yes ! Himalayan Balsam - an invasive species, quite a pest 🌸🍃 !! Thanks again for this 😊. Cheers, Don
Thanks Don!
Another great video. I've ordered the Benro you recommended!
Thanks Graham! I'm sure you'll be very pleased with your new tripod. Let me know how you get on with it!
The fence post is beautiful, I'm never sure if I prefer the length of Warleggan River or the Lynher best
Thank you for your comment Tracy! I've not explored the Lynher yet but it is on my list. Can you give me any guidance as to where some of the most picturesque parts of the Lynher are?
@@Hudson_Swan definitely start at Starabridge and walk up to and over the suspension bridge. It's quite near Rilla Mill
Looks like a great place We've all had bthe dogwalkers-their first question is usually "Have you got any good pics?"!!!!!!
Haha... Yes Graham. Happens all too regularly! :)
Great video! And lovely shots, I'm really pleased you did find the orchid and looks like a nice spot 😊
Thank you. I was about to give up hope of finding one. When I was out the previous week I saw quite a few of them but the very sunny, midday conditions were not conducive to good photography.
Great video-I'm hoping to get out for some flower shots later in the week if the wind ever dies down! Can I ask what tripod you are using? I need a new one and if (as I hope) I will be doing more low level macro, one that goes to ground level would be the way to go. Thanks.
Hi Graham. Thank you for your kind comment. I'm using a Benro Mach 3 Carbon Fibre Tripod. Not the cheapest on the market but, in my humble opinion, one of the very best. It comes with a removable center column which makes it ideal for getting right down onto the ground. Highly recommended! Take my word for it and grab one! If you do, let me know how you get on with it! :)
Thanks for the reply I've heard a few people mention Benro so it's obviously got a lot of points in it's favour. Price wise it's about what I expected-£400 for the tall one, slightly lesss for the shorter. Time to sweet talk the missus methinks!!!
@@grahamhopkinson1816 I've got the tall one.
@@Hudson_Swan Looks like that the best way to go then!
Loved the LE in black and white Hudson. Great to see you doing photography vlogs here 👌
Thank you Dom. Much harder than it looks... :)
@@Hudson_Swan I've always thought it looks very difficult so it must be even harder than I thought! Fair play to you. I'll be up to the place we're not going to mention again in the autumn!

It's very beautiful and peaceful, isn't it? Thank you for your comment, it's appreciated!
Stunning! Thank you Hudson. Good luck with your channel!
Thank you Ingrid! :)
For the pano I prefer the color for that image subject. I have never been a fan of long exposure images. I just don't get it I guess. Thanks for sharing
Hi Tony. Long exposure shots aren't to everyone's taste. Had this been a nicer day I probably wouldn't have opted for a long exposure.
Love the video. Great how you found something to photograph on a dull day 😍 As for my preference I’d go black and white 👍
Thank you Colin. When I saw the clouds rolling in I nearly turned round and went home. Glad I didn't!
Nice video, also in the black and white camp
Thank you Rob!
B&W on a day like that
Agreed! Thanks for the comment Chris.
What's the tripod you are using? I'm looking for one that will go down that low
Hi Graham... It's a BENRO Mach 3 carbon fibre tripod. I've been using it for about a year now and it a fantastic bit of kit. It's extremely sturdy and it has a removable center column which means you can get right down onto the ground with it. I can highly recommend it to you! It's not cheap, but honestly, you will not regret the expense!
@@Hudson_Swan Thanks for the reply, I'll have a look!

Thank you Stephen. Glad you like my content. Hoping to add more and gain confidence over the coming months!
The mood of this video is so soothing and calming.. Loved the creativity and narration by you and not to mention, the title music..
Thank you very much Rao for your very kind comment. I have to admit that I do struggle a little bit when talking to camera but, hopefully, that is something that will improve as my confidence grows! Thanks again! :)
I very often only have ONE Lens when I walk around and it is often a Macro Lens, though I do not like autofocus, so I either use my old analog Leica Macro-Elmarit 60mm 2.8 or my new Voigtländer Macro APO-Lanthar 65mm 2.0, it is a great joy to just use a Macro Lens, the best overall Lens to have ! I do have a 90mm Macro Lens, but I prefer more and more the 60/65mm focal length.
Thanks for your comment! It's good to challenge yourself sometimes and I always find that limiting myself to one lens only forces you to look harder for compositions. Always a worthwhile exercise!
Very nice
