Prioritize getting out with your camera over going to epic locations
This week I take some pictures at a local beach. While spending the morning capturing a few images I realized that I much prefer 'mundane' easily accessible photography locations, as opposed to epic large-scale landscapes. That's not to say that I do not enjoy going to epic locations to explore and make images, but I find that the images I capture at big dramatic locations tend to not be my favorites. I think this is caused by the expectations of capturing amazing images with ease in such a beautiful location, this then causes me to be anxious and not take as much time as I should, resulting in mediocre images. Which brings me to the point of why I enjoy local, accessible photography locations. Going out with your camera in a local area that you know well is great, for me there is less pressure to produce amazing images and as a result I spend more time taking in my surroundings, and properly composing images of the broader scene. And at the end of the day even if I spent all that time to capture an image that I am not overly happy with, then so what, I can just head back the next day or whenever I get the chance to try again.
Obviously, this is all subjective, and if you are such an experienced photographer that you know every single shutter press will result in an award-winning image, well then yeah maybe the images in epic locations would be subjectively better. However, if you are trying to improve your photography skill, I would recommend the easier to access location that you can repeatedly visit as needed and really take your time with the images you want to capture and you will benefit greatly. You will improve your ability to compose images and learn more about your gear hopefully making it possible to capture those award-winning images when you are able to visit an epic location.
Thanks For Watching!

Hey Tim, you definitely have a creative eye for small/intimate scenes, sand patterns are a fav to shoot for me, you captured some nice images. If I can offer any advice, the obvious is just keep taking photos, practice is key. Of course there are many (other) aspects that will make an image standout, IMO light has the biggest impact. It affects colours/B&W tones in contrast to help create depth. One thing that helps me see images is studying other peoples work, I really really enjoy Richard Hamiltons' work, an incredible Canadian & highly prestigious Award winner..and I believe he lives/from NB as well. Some other photographers work I enjoy are (off the top of my mind) ~ Sarah Marino -her initimate images are incredible- ~Adam Gibbs (International landscape photographer of the year, lives in BC, also on youtube) ~Eric Bennett -has a great show on youtube "Brews & Views", also an incredible nature photographer, love his work. I have more "advice/suggestions" lul, but this is long winded as is 😅 Cheers, Will PS: I was eating dinner looking out my window, "out of nowhere" lol, an Osprey dove head & claws first into the Ocean coming up with a fish!! ..Of course no pics, but just to witness it was very cool! Thanks Nick, it is always nice to take pictures in a place with special importance! The new tripod is a Benro SuperSlim Tripod Kit (benrousa.com/benro-superslim-tripod-kit-carbon-fiber/) I like it a lot. It is not as quick to set up as a selfie stick and a small tripod base but its definitely a lot more stable 😄

@@lightmeetslens so far yes, it folds down super small, it's really light and comes with a small yet surprisingly sturdy ball head. When the legs are folded in the diameter is small enough to fully wrap your hand around (even with my tiny hands) so it's quite portable.

You town looks as unpeopled as my small town is. Every now and then I have to decamp to a larger town 130klms away to go to the markets and wander the streets to get more people in my camera. But once you get past the nerves of shooting people, it's a fun pastime.

cool to see someone else from NB. If it helps you, here is what I like to do. During a sunny day in a dense forest from 10am to 11am, the trees and the sun will created these beam of light. try to find one that lands on a small growing tree, a rock or you can stage it and place something. This beam of light will isolated that subject from the back ground the higher the sun is. Also, you want to remove any branches, tall grass or whatever look out of place. With this, you can create this really cool dark moody picture.

Good idea to set the mood of your video with a little teaser! I have done that sort of thing before, and I don't think I've come close to perfecting it, but I'll tell you what I do know. I begin including direct scenes of the thing I was photographing, because the video isn't about finding the waterfall our mountain or whatever, it's about how you as a photographer are capturing it, so I have begun putting really interesting shots of my subject when I can. Also, I have found that showing off camera gear, reminding people that I am a photographer right away keeps people interested in the video longer, so I have included shots of me taking shots. Hope this helps in your endeavours? Great video, nice to see a hidden gem and think about how I may shoot the scene. I also leave the "risky" shot to the end :)

Great tips Nick, thanks! I will try my best to implement them going forwards. I really liked filming and editing the little clips together so I plan to continue doing it (if nothing else for my own selfish enjoyment). Glad you liked the 'risky' shot 😄.

I noticed that you added a new video style at the start of the video! Nice! Your ICM shot is really good. I love the colours and the patterns. It looks like a really cool abstract painting! And oh, I am so jealous that your Canadian waterfalls look much better than ours. And how you capture them so nicely. Normally when I skip breakfast I tend to be lots of snack but I did not plan properly that morning and I paid the price 😂
