Kapila na ingna nga dili lagi "tribes" kay "peoples". "Katawhang Lumad" is Bisaya word for "native" or "indigenous". Lumad Peoples entered into the United Nations lexicon as collective identity of the more than 30 un-Islamized First Peoples of Mindanao. They have marginalized in the 1930's when the state sponsored resettlement programs that shipped Christian poor landless farmers from Central Visayas and Luzon. The government offered their ancestral lands to the settlers, thus, they were pushed to the hinterlands originally their places for hunting gathering, fishing, etc. The settlers called them "taga-bukid" but the real story is that the lumads were the people in the threshold of many rivers. They are not people of the mountain. Injustices still continues, the NCIP-the primary state agency created to implement a law-RA 8371 was in-effectively implemented. Their ancestral domain and land are continually intruded by miners, plantation companies and state infrastructures e.g., roads and bridges, etc. Their ancestral domains were identified by the CPP NPA NDF as "fronts" or battlegrounds while the state sectors such as the AFP, PNP with NTF ELCAC tagged the hinterland dwellers lumads as "communist". Thank you The Lazy Traveller for your posting but the lives and future of the so-called "lumad tribes" are not that bright. By the way, lumad is not a tribe. It is more than 30 different un-Islamized peoples of Mindanao are the peoples e.g. Subanen, Teduray, Dulangan Manobo, Matigsalug Manobo, Bagobo Tagabawa', Kaulo, Blaan, Taboli, etc. Tasaday tribe was a concoction of Don Manuel "Manda" Elizalde, a Marcos crony and chief of the defunct Marcos Sr. Presidential Assistance on National Minorities or PANAMIN. Many lumad young women were trafficked by Elizalde.
