    Two thoughts from me - 1) for a backup sytem to work you must be able to check it's OK at pre-flight, 2) I would be wary of lithium batteries - they burn at 2000deg C. your SS firewall would melt and your extinguisher would be useless!

    • @monkworkz5579
      @monkworkz5579 Před měsícem

      Yep, any backup system needs to be tested on a regular basis. Lithium batteries are a "hot" topic! depending on what chemistry, where they are installed and if you have them vented. Vented overboard with LiFePo chemistry is probably the safest arrangement. The thermal runaway temp for a LiFePo probably not 2000 C, that is far too high.

    Nice job again Bill, your product and information are always helpful. To expand on your analysis, using a Garmin system (and possible others) with a TCW backup battery (or equivalent) as detailed in their install manual follows your guidance and further simplifies the install. Most of the individual components (LRU's) have dual power inputs with diode protection provided internally. Hooking the backup battery to the secondary input effectively makes it the essential bus without the need for external diodes. You get brown out protection during start this way too. Another plus for using fuses is that there are diode protected fuses that can be used for those LRU's that do not have dual power inputs. I've found the Bussman sealed fuse blocks with relay positions very useful for simplifying the architecture. Available in many different configurations to fit your needs.

    Hello, great looking product. Can the regulator be mounted behind the firewall? Will it still need forced cooling air in that configuration. Could a little 12v computer fan work? THanks I dont like blast tubes :-) Great looking product

    • @monkworkz5579
      @monkworkz5579 Před 3 měsíci

      Hi, the regulator is designed to live ahead of the firewall, I've done extensive testing and the amount of cooling taken from the engine is barely measurable with and with out the blast tubes. If you wanted to put it behind the fire wall you'd have to extend the wires, and provide cooling. There is also risk of radio interference extending the wires between the gen and reg.

    Your generator appears to be a 3 phase permanent magnet alternator with a rotating PM field. I assume your regulator/rectifier is a mosfet device, shunting excess current to ground in the overvoltage scenario, and due to the limited total RPM seen in an aircraft engine. Excellent work, and well thought out. As an A&P, IA, I would like to see a cover on the regulator, and a more robust control circuit connector. How about Gecko? s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/cdn.harwin.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/G125-FV10605F3_Pad.png Or even weather-proof Ethernet.

    Good information, but I had to take notes :-). Abuse/extreme tests make good products. It is not completely clear what happens when a bus over voltage event happens. Clearly your device goes "off line", but you said it can absorb 45 amps? For how long? Is there a heat issue absorbing this much power? (BTW- a hidden jewel of functionality)

    • @monkworkz5579
      @monkworkz5579 Před 2 lety

      Hi Bill, yes, it will absorb quite a bit of power but only for a limited time, the intent is to open the fuses on the end(Input coming from the generator, or output coming from the plane) of the device that is suppling this OV current.

    Have these been used on Rotax 912/914 engines? Is voltage adjustable? I like the low weight

    • @monkworkz5579
      @monkworkz5579 Před 2 lety

      Hi Dwayne, should work on a Rotax but has not been tested. There are two user selectable, stock voltage settings, 14.2V recommended when used as a backup and 14.6V recommended when used as a primary.

    Question… can the MX-30L be connected directly to the battery like in Bob Nuckolls’ Z101 or is there a parasitic load that would drain the battery over time?

    • @johnsbright
      @johnsbright Před 2 lety

      I see your answer to this question on Van's Airforce: "... this isn't recommended, there is a resistive voltage divider on the output that keeps tabs on the output voltage and that will over time drag your battery down, bottom line: you need to connect it on the switched side of your master relay/contactor." Am I correct to assume you speak of Lycoming engine RPM and alternator RPM is 1.3 x engine RPM?

    • @monkworkz5579
      @monkworkz5579 Před 2 lety

      Yes, all the RPM values I quote are crank based for lycomings where the vac pad is running at 1.3x
