What is the advantage of this super long plectrum (it's from the Oud?) compared to typical size plectrums like e.g. many Italian mandolin players use? (e.g. Dogal, Pickboy, the almond shaped ones)

Wonderful skill and respect for the piece of music. What are you using as a plectrum/ pick on the mandolin? I can’t see, but it looks like something specialist. I would be interested to know. I am a complete novice on the mandolin, my 1896 Vinaccia mandolin should be with me by the end of August 2022, I had to send it to a luthier for restoration after buying it at auction recently.
It's a Roman plectrum I believe. Galli Strings sell Neapolitan plectrums, Roman ones might be harder to find, but if you look around you might find one.

DISCIPLE, you mean INvisible? You are correct. I am totally relying on video tutorials* and therefore would love to see the left hand too. Also, if possible, sometimes give a view from the top (i.e. the player's view) on both hands or one at a time. * I don't know anybody in the West Coast of South Africa that can teach me in person.
Hi Disciple, thank you for your comment. The video is progressive in a way that you can start as a beginner doing the the first 5:00 minutes. Untill that point everything is in the 1ST position and the double stops have fingerings written in the sheet music. After 5:00 minutes and especially from 7:00 it is not so much a beginner video anymore. The positions are in there as Roman numbers and the fingers in numerics, so if you look at the sheet music you should be able to figure it out once you graps the system. The video was made for a workshop that focusses on the RH. I do understand your point though: I am collecting faq and requests for a new series of tutorials so including LH positions might be a good subject. Good luck!

I just finished your 3 videos series. Great stuff! It would have been nice if you included PDFs of the excerpts and a bibliography of the different methods you mention in the video. Or maybe I'm just lazy and should take more notes.
Good evening, Sebastiaan! I am a totally new beginner at the age of 60 in South Africa. I could not find any mandolin beginners books for adults at all. This lesson is exactly why the books I found online (that is available to SA) are completely inadequite, as I am not a newby at music at all. They don't explain this at all, because they are not meant for classical mandolin players. Thank you for this!

What is tha pick?
I use a roman plectrum as used around the 1900's by players such as Silvio Ranieri. The one in this video is an imitation turtle shell made by the Red Bear Trading company.
