My goal is to continuously learn and improve my process. I want my whips to be a living extension of self. Come with me lets explore together
As I learned to braid I became fascinated maybe obsessed with tension, torsion and flow in whips. Whips were interesting because they move energy, how that energy flows.
As I learn and explore braiding in both natural and synthetic materials I will happily bring you along with me on my adventure. I had to design from first principles and physics as well as feel my way through the process of exploring what shines forth to me.
The world needs more makers, more creatives exploring what they see and creating solutions. To that end I freely share information with other makers as knowledge shouldn't be lost when a whipmaker dies. My hope is that this channel outlives me to inspire others to play and create.

spun twine start for bracelet in 1.5mm handy hundred or 95 Paracord
Want a single loop for 4 strands where the loop can be a closure?
Here's one way to spin 2 cords, pinning them with a bleed knot, spinning the cords into twine and pin them with another bleed knot. This produces a 3mm twine loop from 1.5mm round braided cord and it can be used as a closure loop for a bead on the end of the macrame or other work you choose to make.

One way to bevel 1mm kangaroo thread, some possibly useful ideas you might want to try. One of the issues when you get down to thread you may encounter is that the lace is roughly square, in this case the strand is 1mm x .82mm thick. I tend to try to bevel this at 30 degrees leaving a spine of thicker leather on the flesh side keeping more strength in that strand. Originally this was a 3" disk ...

Hi there. The device used was not clear. Would appreciate clarification. Thanks
A leatherman is simply a pocket knife, the flat hotel room card is a plastic card for room entry, though you can use a old credit card or scrap of leather. I also use a scalpel most of the time now. czcams.com/video/ZZMJoltP5dE/video.html a clearer, newer video with better equiptment.
which one is this on your website? wanted to get a closer look at it. Thank you.
It's a prototype, I'm happy to build you one, you can go to pocketsnakes. Com and order a bullwhip of the length you wish and I'll build you the same Length as a Hybrid whip. Here's a 4 ft whipmaker cord whip, instagram.com/p/C2xrHQXvIDD/
Got mine a few weeks ago and it really is a fun little whip…can even crack it in the house lol
Hi ok I thank you very kindly for your help but I'm trying in every way but I can't do the braiding thanks for your help
There are several ways to do it without braiding, spinning twine I just uploaded. Braiding takes more time and effort.
Is it really as easy to crack,as you make it look? What would that whip, or a whip like it, cost?
That looks nice, but is it really as easy to crack as it looks?
Yes, it is, almost cracks itself.
I want my 53 minutes back.
Trust me so do I, but it takes what it takes to cut. And if you watched through, it might be a hobby to consider as you do have the Patience.
I’m sorry if I missed you telling, but do you bevel before or after wet stretching?
Before, see the previous video,
@@Pocketsnakes Isn't this video beveling after it's been wet stretched, though (as shown in the previous video)? Or are you saying that in *general* you would bevel before stretching, but this was an exception?
Wow! That’s really interesting! If you’re braiding a whip and a strand breaks, are you out of luck? Or is there something you can do to be able to continue?
Typically it depends on where it was when it breaks, sometimes it requires starting over.
I want to learn how to make one of these and are you down in Douglas Arizona haha that looks like the background
I'm in Vail roughly. But happy to take calls.
I guess I don't really understand what the stabilizing hotel card is actually doing to help. Wont the strander cut the lace exactly the same without it?
It keeps the plane even and narrows the space between the bed and CAM lock. You can do it with fingers supporting the disc. It also takes the wobble out of the fence improving the consistency of the width of the lace.
I’m confused?
What would you like to know?
WOW! That’s beautiful! What do you mean when you say “It hasn’t been rolled?” What does that do?
It compacts and flattens everything making it smoother.
I used this trick to unclog mine but unfortunately I still cannot thread it since the threading is so small
Cut a thin taper melt and roll quickly you should get a fine enough point.
Muy rapido
Keeps people from being bored, it's over an hour in real time.
Oh you're good with that 😮 You showed up in my leather tooling searches today. Now I understand your handle! Going thru your videos and hoping you have a tutorial on this one!
I'll see if I can shoot a video for you on the handle.
Lordy you need an old heavy chair with a beefy piece of wood on the side of the backrest. Turn it sideways and drill a hole the height of that drill with your arm braced. Drive an old bearing in it and put the tip of that joker into the bearing. If you don't have a bearing then nail a washer to enforce the hole. You wouldn't have to hold it up and position the chair where your left arm will be free to guide the strand. Your back... shoulder... arm and hand will all thank me 😂 Oh and weight the chair down a bit. @45:00 LAID BACK! 😅 This is great but you need a way to run it thru something that would give you a rough measurement 😉 thanks for this sir.
It would be mildly useful to know the width. But after wet stretching it's around 4 to 5mm wide and then usually gets beveled and sized to be uniform, ends up longer as the material stretches and narrows. So it's a general description of the width. I'd love to have space for a large sturdier work bench or table would make it easier to be sure. Mostly I'm showing my process with what I have.
Thats awesome!
The hard thing is figuring out a shout load that works for both.
That’s a really interesting design! It seems to flow real well, and it certainly *sounds* great!
WOW! That’s a really unique style of whip! With lots of crack! That’s really impressive! When will you start actually selling that whip? Thank You!
WOW! That whip moves so nice! And crackers very well! If I ordered one today, about how long is the wait to get it? Thank You!

Ban guns, hand out bullwhips when they turn in their gun. :o)
especially for those who show up because they don't know the difference in sound.
That is a cool little whip. I've found by experimenting that I can use a similar technique by flicking the Danger Noodle I got from you (just ordered a second one for a spare), with a forward vertical flick, and if while you flick and keep your wrist and hands in motion, you can flick and use the off hand to draw it back running your hand along the length of it near the cracker for continuous flicks with devastating effect (on pillows at least). Like your technique with this flyswatter pocket whip, it is literally like you're firing off continuous arrows to your target. Being an archer and past archery instructor, this motion comes very naturally to me, and translates well to the use of the Danger Noodle for using this method, too. Your products are awesome!
If you oval out an x pattern, you can momentarily pause the whip in a straight line for the same effect without having to towel the whip. You can also pendulum the whip to an apex pause and draw it in a direction. It's a lot like throwing an arrow into a target by it's point if the shaft is out of alignment, it's hard for it to fly true.
WOW! You make this simple and easy to understand for anyone interested in making strong and durable crackers! Thank You!
Ohhhh, please share how you finished this!
It's the next video but you skive about 3/4" and use a touch of wood glue and hold it for 5 min.
How did you unravel the paracord?
so if you pull the 7 strands out a few inches and tie a knot, tie the knot to a post and shuck a wrinkle down the 7 strands until (in this case about 50 ft) the sheath comes off of the inner strands. Then I wrapped a cubit (forearm) then cut bound the elbow end of the loops with a lashing, the cut the loops to make a mop like fly whisk bit out of the useless paracord guts, making them useful.
thats just a vape box, isn't it? I'd love to know how you attached the thick wire to the atomizer coil parts
It is, this is a cheap ($5) buildable mod with 2 posts, the copper wire was spun with a nut (metric) that matched the thread of the screws in the posts so they could be screwed into the post holes. I only stripped enough of the end to screw into the post.
WOW! You make it look so easy and effortless! Does that work the same for rawhide as well? Thank You!
It does, though the rawhide needs to be properly tempered!
your camara always missed
I'm a better whipmaker than a camera man. I'll try again next time I do a leather whip.
😁skillsfull whipmaker
Thanks! Something I’ve wanted to learn, very cool.
it takes a bit of practice but it's the fastest method I know of for beveling a tapered strip. (You can use the same method to reduce the width as the angle gets too long as you can rebevel the strip downsizing it by 1/2 mm for the entire remaining strip.)
Good show!! I’m going to do this also. Thanks
please do so!, I try and share my ideas here to help others improve the craft!
I really like the trick with the needle and short piece of paracord! I’ll be using that for sure. Thanks for sharing.
it works better with whipmaker cord as it's 1/2 as thick as paracord but will hold it well. (3/16" cord 4mm but thinner)
Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Absolutely!
Good show! I think I’ll have to give this a try. Looks very promising. Thanks for sharing!
How did your try work out?
I was thinking about making a one piece no sew - stretch ring.... but this is an awesome idea too!
you can do it as a bracelet as well, it makes the join invisible.
I wish you would zoom out. I can’t see a thing
check out my newer videos on the subject as I'm not the best photographer. I've improved the camera (this one was a cell phone.)
WOW! I just discovered your channel and had to join! You make it understandable! It’s not magic! It’s entertaining science! You could keep one in your pocket to entertain yourself when you’re in a waiting line! How long would it take to get one of these?
very entertaing to those around you in line too!
WOW! These are AMAZING! That looks like so much FUN! How would I get a couple of these fun little whips?
check out my website!
Hot things melt stuff cool.
I've wanted a cleaner way to cut cord I'm currently prototyping a magnetic head, similar idea.
You make it look so simple to do! You’re a very good teacher and have just the right amount of technical skills and “you can do this too” presence! Thank You!
Glad you liked it!
I would love to see a series on start to finish a whip
this is a series start to finish building this type of whip. It's broken into segments because the camera cuts out and I have to clear the memory by uploading what I have so that I can continue to braid. (plus it gives my hands a break.)
I wonder if this would work to scare off bears and cougars while hunting instead of wasting ammo that’s needed for really sketchy situations.
It defiantly lets them know where you are, reducing the chances of startling them.
Thank you, I was looking for this for whip making.
It's my method but it's a good one.
Have you done this with 550 cord? I have limited experience with 650 cord but in my experience the 650 I have is not much different in diameter to my 550 cord.
You can do a 4 layer version in 550 cord, or a 6 layer in either whipmaker cord or 650 older style cord. (before they standardized it to be the same as 550 cord. If you need a spool message me on instagram or facebook. I've got quite a few 300 ft spools of this larger old stock to make these falls. In particular, I've got hot pink, tan, solar yellow, and a few other colors. (black doesn't work as it shrinks too much in the ironing process.
