The Rises and Falls Of Midway Airlines: The First Deregulation Airline

Just because you share a name with a much loved legacy airline, doesn't ensure success. The original Western, was one of the pioneer airlines in the U.S. and people had affection for these airlines. Their exemplary service, the family like feeling between the employees and knowing that you were a part of history and something spectacular, goes a long way towards building a successful company of ANY kind. Many people who try to start airlines with a legacy carrier's name, think that the name and sentimentality will bring them success and money. It doesn't work that way. An airline requires a major investment in time and money and you must LOVE the airline business. This is a service industry above all else and your employees, as well as your passengers, can tell rather quickly, that you don't have their best interests, safety and comfort in mind. Speak to the former employees of any airline that fell victim to greed and mismanagement. Especially the airlines that were once "powerhouses"; Pan Am, Eastern, TWA, Continental, Northwest and Frontier. A name alone, will not give you the "Midas touch"..😞

So, it's fall 1985 and I had just finished my 3rd AIT school in the Army at Ft. Devens in MA and caught a People's Express from Boston to Newark. Last seat in the back row right next to some psychotic woman in full body leather who kept belching in my face and trying to lick my ear...they run the Pay Cart down the isle after takeoff and she's still going totally psycho. No help from a stewardess - I pay my bill when the cart comes by - and elbow blow the nut and put her to sleep...still trying to forget that little hop from Boston to Newark.

I was working at the Ala Moana Hotel when that last crew arrived to check in. The announcement of suspended operations came shortly after they arrived but we knew a little before it was coming. I was the manager on duty and our GM told me that the crew members needed to pay us directly for their rooms as the airline owed us a huge amount of money. I felt so bad for the crew and gave them some free meal vouchers to help them save on the added expense. Ironically, I was in their shoes when the airline I flew with (Rich International Airways) had gone under in 2006 and was faced with the same predicament when we arrived in San Francisco after an overnight flight from HNL - DFW and I ended up getting a flight from SFO back home to HNL the following day. The crew were very kind and sympathetic to us on that flight home. ATA was a good airline and it’s sad they couldn’t stay aloft.

I work for the original Midway Airlines in the mid-80s we were based on LaGuardia at the time it was well-loved it was well-liked but management made very critical errors Chief among those was picking up a bunch of Old Eastern aircraft and another cold weather Hub it doomed them and then when they declared bankruptcy they completely went out of business instead of seeking protection under chapter 7 or chapter 8 whatever it is called they just flat out went bankrupt didn't need to do that either Midway had a loyal public and they had a real Niche that they could have exploited using Chicago Midway Airport when they got away from that and over-expanded that was when they got into trouble

My first flight was in a PSA L-188 Electra from San Diego to LAX on my happy way home to MCI from Navy boot camp in April, 1966. Made several more uneventful and on time trips with PSA over the next 4 years. I was heartsick over the tragic crash into a SD residential neighborhood many years later. Felt close to that 727, passengers and crew for some reason. Not happy that PSA was gobbled up in the endless mergers in the 1980s. A good company was lost to corporate greed.

The plane was configured for landing, with flaps and leading edge slats deployed on both wings. When the collision with Cessna happened it caused the starboard leading edge slats/,flaps to retract but the leading edge devices on the portside wing were still deployed. The additional lift on the port wing caused the plane to roll to the right, past 90 degrees eventually. They were at too low altitude for the aircraft to recover.

OMG… I grew up with PSA! When I was a kid in the early ‘70s, my parents took us on a trip to San Diego. This was my first time flying round trip from LAX to San Diego. We flew in a 727. Back then flight attendants were called “stewardesses.” They had on these bot pink and orange outfits that were miniskirts. They also wore strap up white gogo boots. They were so humorous and at the same time sexually appealing to many of the customers. By today’s standards that would be a no no. But PSA was another era. I flew it many times as I grew up. In 1986, I was at the ticket counter at LAX and the sign said: “US Air/PSA.” I asked the agent, “What’s with the US Air?” He told me that USA bought out PSA. I felt so sad. And then shortly thereafter, PSA was gone. They were like a sibling to me. I will always miss them.

Eastern was a victim of deregulation in 1979. They were never able to overcome the influx of new carriers in the late 80s, and didn’t adapt to new era of competition. Frank Lorenzo was the reason for Eastern, Texas international, Frontier, people Express, and continental to fail. Only continental survived. Frontier was restarted in the late 90s as a separate entity. continental ended up merging with United. They were a victim of deregulation which they didn’t adapt to.
