All the worst amateur cameraman's faults. But helps illustrate how successive Labour councils mucked up Nottingham town centre big time. And this was shot just about when the UK's coal miners were committing suicide, and the town's money was drying up.

@@user-re2fl3sh2d And which government were buying the cheaper products? That's why the miners were striking. I never said the labour councils weren't at falut. But then as now that's only part of the picture. The reason that labour councils are failing now is because the tory government is reducing the funding from central government. I am not here to point the finger in one direction because I am not blinkered into one party. I look at all causes of an issue.

0:31 this still image perfectly encapsulates British town planning and architecture. A beautiful Medieval building (which will be used in all the promotional bumph to celebrate the city) and then vile 1960's prefab asbestos ridden monstrosities next door. Only we British spit on our heritage like this. that house on the left is older than the United States ffs.

It’s weird but even though I haven’t lived in the UK for over 30 years, and I haven’t visited my hometown Lincoln since before Covid, this all looks so familiar, as if I was there yesterday. I know things must have changed - they were modernizing the market area last time I was there, and the bus station was all different, but watching this has the effect of making me believe that if I went back it would all still look like this.

I can remember Nottingham City centre well. I was only about eight years old at the time, living in Bulwell. Me and my mates used to catch the bus (81?) into the city centre and hang around the castle. I also remember Old Market Square with the fountains, Odeon Cinema. I remember going around Victoria Centre and Broadmarsh Shopping centre with my mum. We could never afford to go to Mcdonalds or Wimpy at the time or buy anything from the nice shops, we were living on the breadline and very poor. Despite that, there was some good memories and I worked my way out of the poverty trap we were in.

Thousand pities that this was done five years after the closure of Victoria Station. A number of commentators had not been thought of until after the station closed. Why you let this priceless asset close beats me. Nottingham's rail communications have been poor ever since, and the only remaining station is poorly sited for the City Centre. Nice to see a picture of Huntingdon Street Bus Station, closed 1972, replaced by a monstrosity full of fumes in the Victoria Centre, which I gather is now closed. The way the planners messed about with the city at this time was incredibly short-sighted, obliterating Arkwright Street altogether, and severing Carrington Street in several places for the Ring Road and Broad Marsh. I could never live in a city whose planners (and Dr Beeching) were hell bent on getting rid of the main railway station.
