🛸 AMT Starship Enterprise Models in Star Trek 📺
🖖 Hi, this is Jim from Trek World! Today, we're diving deep into the fascinating world of AMT Starship Enterprise models and their unique appearances in the Star Trek television series. 🚀
These over-the-counter model kits were not just for hobbyists; they were used as filming props due to their low cost and the ability to damage them without harming the more expensive shooting models. We'll explore every shot ever recorded using these models and highlight their significance in the series.
🌌 The most iconic photo of an AMT model kit in Star Trek is the top-down view shown under the title card of the episode "The Doomsday Machine." We'll also look at other shots where these models were used creatively to depict the starship Constellation and its encounters.
📸 The final two shots we'll discuss are where the models were filmed and then composited onto stock footage of the 11-foot model. These rare and amazing photos were taken from 35mm slides sold by Lincoln Enterprises in the 1970s.
Join us on this nostalgic journey as we uncover the hidden gems of Star Trek's production history! 🌠

If I'm not mistaken, I believe I heard somewhere that "AMT" actually built the models, including the large ones, and the shuttlecraft Galileo for the original production. The deal was, that AMT would have the rights to reproduce all of the models in kit form.
I remember seeing a photo of Bob Justman with the Gorn costume and bits of the Constellation model stuffed in its mouth!😂
The K-7 model rotation and the movement of the orbiting Enterprise closely match, so from the point of view of those on the station, it would seem as if the Enterprise is not moving.
The high-resolution "initial sighting" image of the Constellation from that angle shows a lot of remarkable detail that went into that shot despite the relative low-resolution of TVs back then; the pennants, registry, the damage greebling sticking out the blasted nacelle fronts, the painted windows, and the weather around the deflector dish mount rings all bespeak to a level of care that went above and beyond what was called for. This was clearly not Jefferies slapping a model together and then taking a soldering iron to it as many mistaking had believed. That and the composition of the shot, plus the subsequent ones are incredibly complex and interesting, unlike anything really seen before. We wouldn't see anything comparable in TOS until "The Trouble With Tribbles" with the K-7/Enterprise shots, "The Enterprise Incident" with the Enterprise surrounded by Romulan D7s, and "The Tholian Web" with the webspinners encasing the Enterprise in terms of spaceship interactions. And this was about a decade before Star Wars or Battlestar Galactica! Finally, the original plan was to have Richard C. Datin build a second 33" model which would be filmed for all the scenes, especially as the damaged Constellation, but Datin was unavailable and on top of that, the cost to build another 3 footer was too prohibitive. So, Jefferies scrambled to find a solution, and so he lucked out since AMT had the Enterprise kit on the store shelves just in the nick of time for filming of the 2nd season FX. With the discovery of the 3 footer, we can see that the basic hull paint schemes all closely match for the two 18" models and the 3 footer itself. By the way, that's the Excalibur, not Lexington getting phasered there.
Thank you - APU!!
Another excellent presentation. Many thanks.
Excalibur, not Lexington, in that shot
Those wobbly nacelle pylons on the model actually helped sell the illusion that the Constellation was heavily damaged, since the port nacelle is slightly bent.
This was very interesting! Thank you!
Great video, however I would like to point out one thing. The shot of the AMT model through the window of Lurie's office appearing stationary is not a continuity error. Indeed it shows incredible attention to detail. If you look at the shot of the model moving behind K7 you'll notice that the station is rotating at roughly the same speed as the Enterprise is moving behind it, so from the perspective of someone inside the rotating station, the Enterprise would have APPEARED to be stationary. #LLAP
What about the ensign who was killed , disappeared, and was never heard of again😮!!!
YOU'RE FORGETTING SOMETHING: back in the 60'sthe broadcast quality was so bad most viewers would never have noticed these "bloopers" Emily Banks aka Yoeman Barrows was gorgeous!
Fantastic deep dive into this aspect of Star Trek's production. The attention to detail in identifying every AMT model shot is impressive. Thx for this!
You're very welcome! I've been having the time of my life with this stuff.
Wow, I had those communicators. I still have a working CB radio in my old '72 Dodge Dart.
I, for one, am delighted to see as much of Emily Banks as possible...regardless of the torn uniform continuity.
Rick Berman (hisssssssss) pronounced that TAS wasn't canon. So how do we know Kirk's middle name is "Tiberius"? We learn that in TAS. It had almost all of the original actors, it had real sci-fi authors writing for it (Larry Niven and David Gerrold come immediately to mind). Why wouldn't it be canon?
Several years before the first Star Trek movie was produced, William Shatner appeared in person in Indianapolis at Clowes Hall, if I am remembering correctly. He was alone on stage, talking about his career and presenting some lines from Shakespeare, then getting into Star Trek. I think it was before he came on stage, a heavily edited version of this episode, reduced to about 20 minutes was shown. Shatner did talk about the possibility of a movie being made and said members of the original cast were on board, but not Leonard Nimoy. he said the needed Nimoy, "because without him, it wouldn't work."
They fooled me Jerry!
I saw You can call me Bill in theaters. It was insightful on stuff outside of Trek. Think the Love for Spock is a better documentary.
Cant Afford it, bought it anyway. atleast i have till next month to stock up on top ramen....
Not that quite a few years have passed by I have to say Star Trek TMP is one of my favorites, just as great as The Wrath of Kahn.
Please remember: in the 60ies, people who were watching this amazing series were having smaller TV screens and they weren't able to pause them. For example stunt doubles looked almoust exactly like the actors and tiny errors like some spray paint or fake plants and flowers weren't such a big deal. But the uniform mistakes, oh my! 😅
