    Mr. Waterson, I'm so happy YT suggested your video. Your skills and patience probably would be the object of envy for many bricklayers of Victorian times. It would be nice if you could offer classes, pass on your skills to younger generations. Wait! I just spotted on the comments someone saying you're not a bricklayer!!?? Serious!? I'm confused. There’s certainly loads of ways to build planters, and blocks would be one great idea. Definitely not cheaper though- I would’ve needed around 280 blocks, plus steel and concrete reinforcement to resist the pressure of the soil. Material costs would’ve been close to NZ$2000 whereas the timber only cost around NZ$600.

  • @GnosticOrthodoxChurch

    12.5days for a single brickie at 80/hr is a rort, a bricklayer will charge 3.9-4.5$ brick layed inc recycled reds price and I'd doubt they will bother with trenching and excavation works, any experienced landscaper with a labourer could probably finish this at 4 days minimum at 130/hr or 1500day. half a day for excavation works, half a day for concrete, half a day for blocks layed and a day for bricks layed, a day for crushed rock or subfill and half a day for screeding and compacting

    • @danwaterson356
      @danwaterson356 Před 4 dny

      Thanks for the comment and your estimations. I guess it's all subjective. A brickie may charge $4.50 a brick, and may be able to lay around 50-70 per hour but that's on a straight run using profiles and a string line. Curved walls require each brick to be levelled individually, patterned/angled bricks add considerable time, probably bringing it down to 20 bricks per hour. There's also the time taken to cut all the bricks, which perhaps a labourer could do. There are lots of ways to save money on a job like this (such as doing it yourself like I did!, then the total cost to me was only $2500) but I'd wager that a contractor willing to take on a job like this is going want to make profit (and why not, that's one reason they're in business) so think my overall estimate of close to (or even more than) $30K is probably accurate.

      @@danwaterson356 Before all these algorithms we had this thing called organic growth Dan and It's still a thing. When everything else has become so stale - mainly because everyone ends up doing the same things to please the same _algorithm_ - that makes channels like yours stand out. If you fall into the same traps as the rest of them you'll end up just like them and I, for one, wouldn't like that. You're a breath of fresh air mate and you'll grow without needing to bend over backwards to the algorithm. CZcams lies about it's own algorithm so nobody really knows anything for a fact anyway. Don't be a slave to it. You don't seem like the type that's out for an audience with a 'short' attention span so don't let that stinking algorithm turn you into that. It's ruined so many other creators - turned them into algorithm zombies or something along those lines - where they post almost nothing now but 'shorts'. I find this channel refreshing because the videos are _not_ short. I agree with everything Hannes said above ... what an excellent start to a channel! I only found it yesterday but I love it. Don't let the algorithm turn you into another slave. You gotta keep the channel alive, I know that, I've managed more channels than my own - I get it but it's more to do with keeping your audience than it has to do with pleasing the algorithm. There's a lot to be said for organic growth, remember that :)

As a high school teacher I'm all too aware of the exponential decay of attention span over the past few years, to the point it's quite alarming. I don't plan on making channel decisions based on a mis-guided interpretation of the algorithm, just an awareness that its perceived fickle nature will in some part determine the exposure of my videos and therefore the speed at which the channel grows. I have loads of projects planned because I WANT to do them not because I think they'll fit the algorithm, and I'm hopeful you'll all enjoy coming along on the journey with me👍

    Reminds about the very classy brickwork, with various (always glazed) special bricks, mouldings, profiles, various colours, you can see on Swedish houses from the 1800:s... Smaller towns often had wood houses, the cities required brick, which.often was very nice & fancy, even for the working classes (which could have e.g. 1 floor brick, 2 floors wood, slightly smaller in scale, otherwise same styles as for the wealthy).... 1900 there were around 500 brickyards in Sweden, using circular kilns where a worker were supposed to move 104000 bricks per week, in and out of the Kiln, each stone 4,5 kg, totally around 47 tons. Temp around 70° C, and the work described as "As close to Hell as you will ever get"... I can imagine, in those days, you could order any kind of special brick for your project, in small amounts & handmade and it would not be expensive... One of the traditional kilns still exist, Bältarbro Tegelbruk. I guess, mighty expensive today...

I guess the technology was the same no matter the location.
