    Picky eaters don’t realize how they affect those who are their friends. I have lived with a man for over twenty years with an extreme picky eating ‘disorder’. He is now 66yrs old and still crosses his arms over his chest with his head going back and forth- no I don’t like it. I’ve seen him take a plain hamburger with cheese and throw into trash because it had cheese, and then will eat a grilled cheese sandwich. He won’t try any Chinese foods, no Mexican foods, no Italian. He has lived on plain hamburger, fries, chicken strips, pot pies and peanut butter with brown sugar sandwiches his whole life. He WILL NOT try anything new, and if he does, it is a tiny taste and he wants to be applauded for the try. He doesn’t attend celebration dinners or try any new eateries because he knows they won’t have anything for him to eat. He won’t even try pizza. It has been an awful ugly frustrating friendship and I’m always having to eat alone. I consider it an immature stubborn habit that goes all the way back to his mommy making him sit at the table while everyone else left. Always blame mom right?

    So useful to me as a parent if a 22yr old anorexic daughter and a psychotherapist . . External using the ED has been helpful in both contexts . I use it as a separate and distinct statecto help mobilise anger and thus motivation and confidence to engage in assertiveness skills . Using CAT therapy we map the role and it’s voice and power on paper , pros and cons of maintaining the beliefs versus a new healthy way of challenging and replacing the ED’s voice Thanks again

    what foods would I have to eat to develop this kind of disorders you were discussing about? When I binge eat a smoothie made of e.g. 10 bananas and 20 dates plus cinnamon it does not only taste delicious, but it gives me energy for hours, I feel great and happy and productive. Later I may eat 1 kg of cooked rice with a whole broccoli with spices (no oil added) and that does not give me anxiety, but makes me feel satisfied and very positive. I wonder what foodstuffs your patients eat? McDisorder?

    • @MajaDrake
      @MajaDrake Před 10 lety

      Thats just rude. U can make urself have a eating disorder. Its a mental disorder (chemical in the brain!)

    • @ImprovingAbility
      @ImprovingAbility Před 10 lety

      MajaXVideos I agree and see your point. For example Casein is one of the many poisons in dairy products, which cause chemical disorder in the brain. Anyone who eats enough of it will get sick (including mental disorder, brain fog, anxiety, lethargy etc.). People get sick by eating lots of animal produce or plant oils. It's just sad that there is no warning label on dairy products. Such misinformation is more than rude, it's a misleading practice of the meat & dairy industry and irresponsible of doctors and nutritionists not to warn people about the risks. Instead patients are stuck with vague talking and off topic theories and will not get any helpful lead that can change the cause of their suffering.

    Thank you all for sharing your thoughts and experience. Each of you made points that resonated with me and my experience. As we know everyone's recovery journey is unique to them and may look very different at various points of treatment. As part of my personal, 40 year battle with ED, I found it helpful to externalize ED in order to reclaim power over my disorder and accept ownership for my actions. I experienced the biggest shift in my thoughts/disorder during a group art-therapy program.

    So, Dr. Insel....Perhaps you are well aware that you are seeing entirely through rose-colored glasses believing that all "eating disorders treatment" is so wonderful as that which your daughter Laura received in Atlanta. For most of us, finding humane treatment, or any treatment at all from knowledgeable or competent practitioners or facilities is almost always impossible. What are you doing about making these so-called "hospitals" respect our human rights and stop being simply prisons for skinny kids? You speak of insight. Frankly, the problem isn't the that the patients lack insight. The practitioners themselves lack insight and fail to see the wonderful insights that us patients have. The DSM, any DSM, should be tossed out, and the voice of those who actually have these eating problems should rise above the voice of unknowing "experts." Psychiatry should take its fingers out of the pie. These classifications and oversimplifications do us no favor. They cause stereotyping, bigotry, profiling, and denial of care. For instance, during my very last ever appointment with such a person, a psychiatrist, September 2013, this woman "looked me up and down," clearly trying to sneak a peek at my weight, and then, noting that I was thin, said to me, "So what's your problem?" She pulled out her prescription pad. I told her I suffered from anorexia and I also suffered from severe binge eating but that I did not throw up. The woman glanced at me again and then said, "No, that's impossible. There's no such thing as as anorexia with binge eating. You are delusional. Take a pill." I left in disgust, realizing my eating disorder had been around longer than she had even been alive. Dr. Insel, I'm no adolescent. I'm your age. When you and I were growing up, we didn't see Twiggy on the news. I saw Vietnam, and later, I heard Nixon lie. You did, too. My doctors lied to me as well.

      OpObserver Dear OpObserver, I am so, so sorry. I will keep you in my thoughts. There are so many others. It was helpful to me to reach out and find folks that had also been abused and neglected by the System that supposedly "helps" us. I encourage others, that is, patients, ex-patients, and friends and families, anyone concerned, to speak out and actively work to change the way these "disorders" are treated and seen by the medical profession, in society, and in the media. I consider myself fortunate to be alive. Please contact me if you wish to communicate further. I am an activist in the field and a professional writer living in the USA.
