Hi, I have never seen a hearing aid, overheat per se. If the sound you were hearing is really the low battery sound, the first thing I would do is try a whole new pack of batteries as you might have gotten a bad pack. The second issue you could have is excessive battery drain from the hearing aid, which would require it to go to the lab for repair. I’m hoping that it’s just a bad pack of batteries that you’ve gotten.

This model and the vast majority of rechargeable hearing aids, must be sent in to the manufacturer to have the battery replaced. If it is under warranty there is no cost. Warranties are usually 1-4 years depending on the tech level and where you purchased it. I hope that helps!

Hey, James! I agree with you. That sounds too incredible. Oticon is one of the 6 largest brands and the majority of Audiologists will be quite familiar with current and past products. Earmolds and wax filters haven’t evolved much over the last 10 years either, so parts and repairs for those shouldn’t be a big issue. I would keep calling around or reach out to Oticon directly to find someone local to you who can service the devices.

Do you have any of the original literature that came with the devices to find the model information? Or can you read the serial numbers on the aids?

Out of warranty costs will be specific to your provider. I see them range from $300-$500 depending on the age of the hearing aid. This usually comes back to you with a 1 year warranty.

Hi! Great question. Yes, alcohol could break down domes over an extended time, but the reality is that these get changed out really regularly and in 10 years I've never seen a dome that looked damaged from alcohol. We check the domes when we clean the hearing aids every 4-6 months and pop on a new one if they are too dirty to clean easily. They cost a few cents :) I hope that helps!

Hey guys, the first thing I would try is to clean the contacts in side the case with an alcohol wipe. The next would be to turn the hearing aid itself off and then back on. Some aids allow you to do this by holding down one of the volume buttons for 5-10 seconds, then do it again to restart. If neither of these correct the lights, it is time to take both the aids and the charger in to your provider.

Sizes do vary among manufacturers, even with the same numbers, just like clothing sizes can vary by brand. The best way to get an accurate measurement is with that manufacturer’s measurement tool in the office. I’m sorry to not be able to give more specifics!

Dizziness like this is often referred to as vertigo. There are several causes but the most common of them is a condition called BPPV which is actually easy to resolve in the office. I highly recommend that you first reach out to your Primary Care Provider to describe your symptoms but the next step is an Audiologist.

I love speech mapping! It is especially useful when a spouse is a soft talker and my patient is still struggling to understand them. I can let the soft talker speak with the speech mapping running so that I can see where they are being underamplified.

I love the elephant ear. That is excellent for home use and I used it in my office years ago. Many people already have a baby syringe at home which is why I recommend it.

You are absolutely correct. Tinnitus originates in the brain, however the number one cause is damage to the inner ear. 90% of people who suffer from tinnitus also have a treatable hearing loss.

That is so interesting! I'm sorry that you have had that experience. You are absolutely correct that tinnitus is originating in the brain, not the ear. I would be curious if your provider has used masking within the hearing aids themselves and have you been back for repeat visits to adjust that masking. We generally setup a once a week session for 6 weeks to accurately dial in the hearing aids to correctly address the tinnitus.

Hi! Because tinnitus is a symptom, there can certainly be complete cures by simply getting to the root cause. It can be caused by medications, head trauma, stress, high blood pressure, wax impaction and other issues. When it is caused by damage to the inner ear, and often times accompanied by hearing loss, the use of hearing aids improves the vast majority of tinnitus cases. Tinnitus retraining therapy and CBT are further option when hearing aids are not enough or when hearing loss is not involved. I hope that helps!

Great question. First, we ensure that the eardrum is intact and there is no history of a hole in the eardrum. Second, we only use distilled, purified water so we know we are not introducing any new bacteria to the ear. And third, we use an ear dryer (like a hair dryer for ears!), to ensure that we don't leave water behind. But also, the vast majority of people are not going to be prone to an ear infection simply because water got in their ear. We shower and swim without earplugs regularly. Open bodies of water like a river, lake, or even a contaminated swimming pool are the usual places that bacteria is introduced to the ear, causing an ear infection. Thank you for the question!

This is not correct, the squeezing bulb pointing to the eardrum is not the right recommendation as the pressure will just hit the eardrum and may break it. The safest tip is the one doesn't spray straight but goes a little sideways, they hit the wall of your ear-canal and drive wax out. You need the water tumbling action around the ear canal, and not the direct hit like was shown on this video. Can be more harm than good. Buy a specific tool/tip for the job.

Yes and no. There are many, many causes of tinnitus. It can result from - A simple wax impaction or ear infection -Damage to the auditory system (aka hearing loss) -Medication side effects -Anxiety and stress -Caffeine or alcohol -Head trauma -Many more causes So while, yes the tinnitus is really coming from the brain, a hearing loss is the most common cause. At least 50% of patients that I see in my office with hearing loss, also experience tinnitus. There are many effective ways to reduce it, one of which is by wearing hearing aids. I see many new patients with the sole complaint of tinnitus who in fact have a treatable hearing loss that they were not aware of. We are able to treat two problems at once. That is untrue. About 90% of people with tinnitus also have hearing loss, even to a mild degree. The doctoral level Audiologists in my office only follow the research. The most compelling of which is the neurophysiological model of tinnitus from Jastreboff which points to central involvement. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6353153/ Hearing aids are not even our first recommendation. First, we look at all other possible underlying causes including, medication side effects, wax impaction, ear infection, head trauma and many others before addressing the hearing loss. A happy byproduct of addressing a loss is that tinnitus is nearly always reduced. There is more than one mechanism that addresses the tinnitus. One, by actually raising the volume of ambient environmental noise, it naturally has a masking effect. Two, giving the brain the feedback it has been seeking at the frequencies of loss has a calming effect that lingers even after the aids are removed. Three, we can add actually masking sounds according to the type of tinnitus and patient preference. I appreciate that you have read compelling information elsewhere, but it is exceedingly rare for us to refer a patient from our office for further treatment, but when we do it is usually for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy which is the next effective approach for outliers.

@@moisessoteldo592 that’s a good way to put it. When the ear gets input it has been missing, it can soothe the tinnitus. Additionally, raising the ambient sounds in the environment through amplification can literally mask out the tinnitus. In more severe cases, we can even add more masking sounds through the aids, everything from brown noise to nature sounds. Tinnitus retraining therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy are further treatment options as well.

Choosing to use hearing aids is a personal choice. I have certainly seen that many people who are born with hearing loss choose to embrace their deafness. I support whatever is right for you.

Hey, that's great! Out of thousands of patients, I've seen the high and the low end just depends on that person's wax production which is highly variable. The average that I see is 2-4 times a year but I certainly have people who need to do it weekly and also those who have zero wax and could never change a wax guard. Amazing, right? I'm just thrilled that you are proactive as it will keep yours aids in great working order!

I wish I could give you an easy solution. Was your provider able to give you a prediction of your results? Do you know what your unaided vs. aided word discrimination scores were? If they are unable to give you these answers (and your aids are not proprietary or locked), take them to another provider and ensure that they are going to perform a test called Real Ear Measurement.
