Michigan Geology | The Precambrian | Jacobsville Sandstone
Join us as we begin our journey through time looking at Michigan's geologic history - starting with the Precambrian formation the Jacobsville Sandstone. This sandstone houses the Jacobsville Aquifer, providing many Michigan residents access to water. This formation has also been sought after for its aesthetic appeal, resistance to extreme temperatures, and strength. This rock has been quarried dating back to the 19th century, providing good structural material for buildings found in many parts of Michigan along with Canada and other areas in the United States.

    Saw one explode above Chatham around 1974, we were at the MSU extension for a conference and during lunch break my father and I were in the truck in the parking lot having a sandwich, it was traveling from south to north. Good luck finding it there's a lot of trees there.

    Rainy lake in the NE corner of lower Mi drains from time to time... that same area had a major cholera outbreak because of human toilet issues putting their outhouses over sinkholes and the neighbors downstream using the tainted ground water

    Fishing the E branch of the Fox River, my friend I fished downstream from 77 and we came upon a beaver dam. We went around the dam only to find a large sand flat and only a trickle of water , I often wonder if there was some type of karst topography that happened to coincide with the dam...We then went past the sand flat and the river started up again.

    Would pumping millions of gallons of water contribute to sink holes.

    • @michigangeologicalsurvey
      @michigangeologicalsurvey Před 3 měsíci

      It is possible, but that is very dependent on the geology of the area and how quickly the water is removed. Overpumping from aquifers in areas that have large karst systems is more likely to lead to the formation of sinkholes. Subsidence will typically occur before a sinkhole will form, so there are signs beforehand.

  • @quakekatut8641
    @quakekatut8641 Před 3 měsíci

    Great video and explanation. With some types of non human induced sinkhole regions, do sinkholes like these tend to trend along a fault line system? I've read about this but haven't seen much on this possible connection. Thanks.

    • @michigangeologicalsurvey
      @michigangeologicalsurvey Před 3 měsíci

      Sinkholes can form along fault lines, but are not recorded or studied often so there's not much research currently out there. Most sinkholes are going to form in areas where groundwater causes dissolution of limestones or any carbonate rocks leading to ground deformation

    The gypsum that you speak of was mined until about the year 2000 in the Grand Rapids area. I worked with a guy who was a blaster first in the mines by Butterworth (where there remain concerns about sinkholes due to the shallow nature of the mine) and then at the mine near East Paris street out by the airport until he was layed off when the mine closed. I believe that one of the mines in the vicinity of the CSX rail yards is still used for document storage. So the Jurassic beds were used economically and may include potentially mineable potash deposits around Mecosta county. Still a good video so I will be leaving a thumbs up.

I'm studying for the Real Estate Licensing exam for Salesperson and there's a section on PLSS in the training materials but I found the explanation of the online course I'm taking, too brief and there weren't any images to go with their explanation so I had a look at what's available on CZcams.
