I've been teaching this song for 50 years. I learned it from Utah Phillips who told me it was from Blind Lemon Jefferson, but he also told me it was endemic so found all over the south. This girl does a great job with it. Oakland CA

I saw Martin perform this a couple of weeks ago in Durham. He is the Mighty Oak of Folk. Incredible musician, storyteller, and a wonderful, humble gentleman. Eliza follows her parent's footsteps with passion, love and pride.

a true pro , an example to all that, 'once you start, you do not stop' I would see and hear him at Club Memphis in Leeds , Yorkshire , England 1964/5 every week, doing floor spots to a sparse audience. Some forty years later I booked him for the Windward Folk Club in St Albans , England where despite the bell ringers practicing, he insisted on going on and starting his first set . He never drove , he like Vin Garbutt , was a pedestrian . He could also do a great version of 'Heartbreak Hotel' which endeared him to those lucky enough to witness. Very approachable man .

I saw Martin perform this version a few years ago; I can remember him telling the same story. He seems to have become quite frail in the intervening years, especially in his voice, but it's lovely to see that he can still put on a captivating performance. I feel so sorry for him that he lost Norma.
