The rude fountains of Miltenberg
In the town of Miltenberg, there is an old -- and very rude -- fountain, which I just had to take a look at. There is also a modern fountain that is possibly even ruder. This is a story of protests and insults, but not all of them are true.

Quirks of the Frankfurt U-Bahn

Frankfurt's U-Bahn system is every bit as functional as you'd expect it to be. But it does have some interesting quirks that an average tourist might miss, so I thought I'd show you a few of them. On the way we'll be looking at an abandoned road tunnel, a storeroom that never got built, a platform that proved too short, and a random dance floor. Between 1988 and 1994, all of Germany was enthralled and entertained by the antics of a mysterious figure known only as "Dagobert", who, in an attempt to extort money from department stores, built cunning contraptions and outwitted the police in a variety of comical ways. This is the story of Dagobert, who he really was, how he evaded capture for so long, how he was finally caught, and what he'...

Being late is not a big deal IF it's communicated beforehand or you're meeting as a group. At least in my opinion. There might be exceptions if e.g. you know that dinner will be ready or it's crucial to be on time for a movie, bus etc that cannot wait. Also, in the Ruhrpott are it's fine to ask for doggy bags. Most restaurants are prepared to bag your left overs.

You can also do this with languages that aren't even related to one another and make one seem like the odd one out. Hebrew: Shalom Indonesian: Salam Persian: Salam Japanese: Kon'nichiwa Isn't japanese so weird? No, there just hasn't been any influence from semitic languages in Japan.

ice on the road is unironically the most dangerous thing you can get. remember, a tree falling down maybe hits one or two cars and you can easily avoid a fallen down one. ice is often not easily seen and so can cause multiple and more crashes and different types of vehicles to slide off etc.

Ok, saying saxony-anhalt instead of Sachsen-Anhalt is a bit weird. like english speakers won't understand either but as a german speaker I wouldn't be irritated by saying it correctly.

And thanks to such more or less standardized designs, I as a Dutcjman had surprisingly little trouble driving in Japan. Can't read a thing, yet still understood most of the signs. They have a few that are different, like the stop sign more resembles a yield sign, and instead of a no overtaking sign they have one that says you're not allowed to cross the center line. But it all makes sense. Imagine having to learn all the signs for every country you visit....

I learned kurrent as a kid, thanks to my granny. Still can read it (what helps me in my job when we have property contracts from 100 or more years ago and it’s fun to read them). But grannies and grandpas are dying and nobody is teaching kids kurrent anymore. It was such a great code writing for my best friends and I.
