Photojournalist Alexa Blair Wilkinson talks about Resonance, Responsibility, & Photo-Radicalism!
I've long been a fan of photojournalist Alexa Blair Wilkinson. So grateful to them for responding to all my questions, and for the opportunity to share this immensely important and invigorating conversation!
Alexa Blair Wilkinson is a Creative Director, graphic designer, and photojournalist based in New York. Their graphic design and photography journey started in tandem with a once thriving music career back in the early 2000’s. In designing their own merch and websites and creating content for other artists within their community, they started to approach design as more of a creative medium rather than a career necessity. They received an AAS Graphic Design Degree from Parsons School Of Design in 2011 while exploring new inspirations and ways to incorporate design into their professional journey. After struggling in a cutthroat music world, Alexa found a home in the hospitality industry where their eye for menu design and composition quickly propelled them into management positions and creative roles. After the pandemic, photography and graphic design became Alexa’s full time role. They now use their 16+ years of professional experience and passions in various roles over multiple industries to inform and shape their view of the world’s injustices and beauty.
Though their professional history has been quite robust, Alexa’s work has always attempted to center calls for social justice, and utilizing social media as an educational and activation tool. Their latest work as a photojournalist centers around the Palestinian liberation movement covering protests from NYC to DC.

5 Things That Have Inspired My Writing This Month
Hi, Hiba! I too happened to pick up a couple of seasons of Superstore from the library this summer. A little spicy for my tastes, but it's tough to find a good pick-up/put-down sitcom these days. America Ferrera is good in any show. Abbott is a staple in our household. My son is glued to the tv whenever it's on.
Hi Eric! Yeah, Superstore was a good one to have on in the background. It was my first time seeing America in anything-- still haven't managed to see Barbie, but I'm looking forward to catching it eventually! And Abbot is great!!!
Thank you so much! I am brand spanking new to Scrivener and this really helped me! :D
Yay, glad it helped you! :)
This was extremely helpful! How can I save this as a template for new files?
Thank you!! They have a tutorial about that on the L&L blog. I haven’t tried it but give it a look and let me know if you need more help: www.literatureandlatte.com/blog/create-custom-templates-for-your-scrivener-projects
@@hhtahir it was extremely easy. I figured it out myself. You set it all up as you prefer and go to the file tab select 'save as template' about 2/3rds down the menu
@zakaryreilly awesome, thanks for sharing!!
Great interview! Great questions especially. It was great to hear from Alexa. Their photojournalism work is truly amazing.
Thanks so much! And yes, truly- looking forward to their long form writing!
Great ideas
Thank you!
What a great interview! I loved the part at the end about revisiting your "old work," even if it's new to the world, and how it can feel like a time capsule. You always have such amazing guests.
I loved that part too. Glad Kiran brought it up. Thanks so much, Smiti!
I'm only three minutes into this and am finding it fabulously useful. Thank you!
Glad to hear it!
I am so excited for this episode!
Thank you, Smiti! It was a fun conversation.
Hiba, I know this is old, but hope you will find this and answer. My question is did you use the regular template for fiction or the poetry format for this?
Hi Doraine, I didn’t use either! I started with the “blank” template and built my own. Hope that helps!
Thanks, Hiba. Both of these videos were extremely helpful.
Sure! Glad to hear that
Hello, I found your channel via your Scrivener set up tutorial for novel writing. Your set up for outlining was very informative and I’m now using many of your methods. Then I watched your “writing a book in 10 days” series and was impressed, that’s a lot of words in such a short time. Then I visited your blog and saw you are a graduate of USM, Me too! I graduated in December 1984 with a degree in computer Science. #SMTTT I return to Hattiesburg many times per year to visit my mother. I also saw you are an Arkansas graduate, my son (computer science) and his wife (marketing) graduated in 2021 from there. Both are here in Dallas-Ft Worth now. I have that same Keurig in black. You have a new subscriber.
Wow, thank you!! Glad you found the videos helpful!!
Diannely’s collage poem rules were so fascinating! It got me interested in learning more about poetry structure. I really appreciated hearing how she used those rules to help her approach trauma. I will definitely revisit this interview in the future.
Yes! I’m looking forward to trying out her prompt!
Love this! It's so fascinating to see what inspires you to write. I love the variety of media you cover. Also, adding The Jinn Daughter to my TBR :)
Thank you so much! I hope you enjoy it!
Once again, excellent video! Thank you! New subscriber here now!
Awesome, thank you!!
Thanks for the video. I was using Write It Now 5, but saw all the hype for Scrivener and plenty of videos. It seems to have a lot more features and I really like the "screen shot" so you don't loose material when editing. Thanks again, nice work! ***Edit...Darn it! I just saw the sales commission portion when I dropped down...just purchased Scrivener!***
I'm so glad it helped you! I hadn't heard of Write It Now, but it looks very similar to Scrivener? If you like the screenshot feature, check out my poetry and short fiction Scrivener tutorial for a few other tips & tricks (And no worries about the affiliate link! <3)
@@hhtahir Thanks, I will check out the poetry and short fiction tutorials. The "in software" tutorial is soooo long. I just skipped it and dove in. Took me forever (2 hours today) to even figure out how to start typing after my import (which was confusing due to the formatting being all centered lol). Now that my chapters are created and the 3 completed ones (drafts) are imported, I can set down to work. Thanks again!
Thanks for sharing, Hiba.
Sure! I hope you found it useful!
Great job :-) Thanks for your time.
Thank you! I hope you found it useful!
Extremely useful information. Thank you very much.
Glad you found it useful!
Ya know for a tutorial, it'd probably be a good idea to slow tf down so people can follow what you're doing step by step. Lol thanks for trying though.
Genuinely curious to know which part was too fast for you?
Love it
Me too!
Love this point!

Such a great interview! When Hannah mentioned calling themselves out in their own drafts, I felt SEEN! Love this!

Thank you, Smiti! Looking forward to your thoughts on them all!
Love this short and sweet review! I am so intrigued by the poetic prose you mentioned.
Thank you, Smiti! I hope you enjoy it!
I like your simple, straight-forward process. Thank you!
Glad you found it simple and straightforward! Thank you, Ruth!!
This was so fascinating to see! Thanks so much for sharing! A goal of 10 videos a quarter really stuck out to me. It frees us a bit from the "1 video per week" grind while still being productive overall. I'm thinking a lot about sustainability on CZcams and this goal of yours really stuck out to me. I'm so happy you found a system that works for you. I love how tactile it is and that it doesn't seem daunting. So if you forgo a week, it's easy to catch up. Thanks again!!
Thank you, Smiti! Yes, exactly- the “1 video per week” mentality brought me a lot of stress in 2023, but 10 videos every 3 months has been manageable! And it kept me from stressing out when I opted to complete the CZcams course instead of working on videos last month. I find using a mix of TB goals/TB time tracking alongside the traditional to-do list- and sometimes in lieu of it- so reassuring!
I don't know if anyone knows this, but you can use emojis as the icons for the folders and text in Scriveners (at least in Mac) Do as you would do to change the icon, but on the top of the drop down menu for the available icons, you can choose "Icon from text" and you can use any emoji.
I didn’t know that! Thanks for sharing!
I really don't want to be rude or anything, but I don't understand the purpose of this video if you just took everything from someone else's workflow and the default novel theme from scrivener but done manually instead of literally clicking one button and have everything set up. Why? 🤷🏾♂️ You like to waste time?
Lmaooo because “clicking one button” doesn’t give me my preferred set up... This is just me sharing my process, which is a compendium of numerous other CZcamsrs’ workflows 🤷🏻♀️
@@hhtahir you can just start with the default setup for novel provided by scrivener. It's basically 90-95% the same as yours, I'm sure you're aware of it but don't want to admit or you like to waste time setting it up yourself. Anyway, other than that - enjoyable video 😉 I subscribe
@theshisho Nope. The default novel setup is actually a lot better than mine because it’s optimized for compiling the final product. I just copy and paste each section into a word document. It gives me another opportunity to edit. Maybe I do love wasting time lmao. Thanks!
Have you watched the video for I bet you think about me? It’s so funny.
Pretty much all the songs on red is about Jake. The video even has the red scarf in it like all to well.
i slowed it down but still its too quick lol..Total newbie
Sorry! Let me know if you have specific questions- I’ll see if I can help.
Love the quotes and your perspective! I appreciated your final take on this book too because that was my feeling from an initial perusal.
Thank you, Smiti! Something I forgot to mention in the video but should say is that there is a good bit of advice on overcoming negative emotions, which I think does set it apart from some other books in the space!
thank you for this
No problem 😊
I've been using Scrivener for years, mostly for work related writing and never used more than about 10% of its functionality. Now I've retired I'm getting into a number of writing projects from family history to poetry to short and long form story writing. This one video has made a world of difference - I'll never be a published writer but at least I'll be amore efficient one. Many thanks
I'm so glad to hear it helped you, Peter!! Good luck to you on all your future writing, and feel free to check out the poetry version for more short-form and poetry-specific tips! Here it is: czcams.com/video/qWcAAI4Xvlg/video.html
So excited to watch this!
Thanks so much. It was a great conversation!
Great Video, thanks. Cool intro video without a face 🙂
Thank you! Glad it helped!
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Great reaction and discussion! Can't wait for Rep TV tracks and your reaction to them! The discussion over 'Thats When' was pretty hilarious 😂😂 I have always interpreted it like this though - That the premise is the girl needed space in the relationship but now wants to come back and is both regretful and apologetic about the distance she created. So throughout the song she gets reassurance from the guy about when can she come back to him. So the guy - as you all also mentioned - is basically listing out any possible scenario that can happen in a day, as if saying she can come back whenever. So the whole thing is the girl getting reassurance from the guy that he's always waiting for her. But its said in, according to me, a kind of corny way 😂😂 Like when someone asks their lover how long will they love them and they answer with - till they have the ability to laugh and cry, wake up and sleep, etc etc. I hope this didn't add to the confusion 🤣 P.s. hope you noticed the All Too Well parallel in the phrase 'Mr. casually cruel'. It was quite interesting to me!
Thank you so much! That explanation makes a lot of sense-- and no, we didn't pick up on the All Too Well parallel, but the two songs definitely have similar themes!
I'm on Windows and am having a difficult time trying to use the keywords title. I can't get the metadata into the column in the editor. I did what you said and have created the information, it just won't let me put it in. Thanks for this tutorial. It was really helpful.
Not sure how it works in Windows… I hope you were able to figure it out! Happy to help if you weren’t, though.
Extremely useful... thanks for this set up tutorial
You’re welcome! Glad to hear it helped!
300 take out coffee (=days) would basically be 10 months. And October 27 is the 300th day of the year. It also links the song back to Clean "Ten months sober, I must admit (...) Ten months older, I won't give in" She truly is a mastermind.
Great catch!!
Sad Bangers 💙 Love the 80’s and the lyrics! omg! its so mind blowing! The strongest Vaults yet
Excellent tutorial! I've been using it for years but never to its full utility.
Thank you! Happy to help!
I think the unexpected vibe of Slut! is exaaactly the point! The song isn’t what it seems on the surface. It’s softer and heartfelt. Just like her and the media’s obsession and criticisms of her.
I think you can see the on-and-off relationship being explored in Style with the full lyric, because she says "When we go crashing down, we come back every time / cause we never go out of style." I think she means the way styles tend to go out of fashion but then come back again and again, so they never truly go out of style.
Yes, you're right! I realized after filming that the full song definitely gets the idea across.
Agree! It’s also explored in Suburban Legends. They will (and do!) go down in history as a couple because obviously we’re all still talking about it. But in a teenage pop-fandom sort of way of the suburbs…not in any urbane kind of way.
