Easy fix for oxidized patio furniture
zhlédnutí 283KPřed 11 lety
Instead of spray-painting your patio furniture, try this easy fix to make it look as good as new!
Isn't 10W40 just as good if not better. My view.
It may be but I went with what the repairman at the patio store recommended. I’d say give it a try and see how it compares.
If you wanted to repaint the metal what would you use? Thanks
I’m sorry I don’t know the answer to that. I did have one swivel/rocker chair that had a base that had rusted (you can see that chair in the background of this video). They did repair work on that for me at the patio store. They also repainted that base. I think it ran around $70.
Just perfect.
Thanks for this video
Omg thank you so much!! Love this. ❤
Let's put the gloves on AFTER we apply the harsh chemicals!!! 😂😂😂😂😂
I suppose at the time I didn’t consider silicone a harsh chemical but it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
I'm gonna try this. Thanks. The other products are expensive.
Gracias. Nosotros hemos tenido el mismo problema...y éste ha sido el único vídeo que hemos encontrado.
De nada. Me alegro de poder ayudar.
I was having the same issues and this video was super helpful for figuring out how to get the corner bookcase in. Thank you so much!
You are welcome!
This genuinely stopped me from having a full on meltdown trying to get this to work, thank you so much for the advice!!!!
Your welcome!
❤❤❤ Where did you learn how to do this?
I was told about this by a man at the patio furniture store I had purchased my patio furniture from years before. It isn’t a permanent fix, but it really does refresh the finish for a time.
@@Jeano102 Thank you for sharing this knowledge. I am in the process of diy my patio furniture, wish me good luck :)
@@altinokz good luck. I will tell you I did have two of my patio chair bases repainted because the paint was chipping off. That’s when the guy told me about this fix.
I have been looking high and low all over the internet for how to save furniture that's been oxidised, the exact same kind that's in this video, and this is the first one I've found. Thank-you!! Can you find the chemicals you used in a hardware store?
Yes you can find them at a hardware store and even Amazon. I think I got mine at an auto parts store.
@@Jeano102 thanks. 🙂
Thank you so much for all of your advice. I have two cats, so, the same "problem" than you, they will jump in the top ! So i will look for your another video about ikea and cats :)
Thank you. I’ll get working on that other video.
Is there an opening to access an electrical outlet behind the shelves?
Not unless you cut it yourself. The backing on the shelves is thin and I imagine it wouldn’t be too hard to cut out a spot for an outlet. The hardest part would be finding the exact spot to cut.
@Jeano102 thank you. That's what i thought. I looked everywhere and could see an opening
Thank you so much for all of your advice. It was so helpful. The only mistake was literally dropping the bracket behind the shelf.😔
I worried so much about doing that myself.
Very very helpful thank you I'm about to do this
You’re welcome!
Thank you. This video was very helpful. I couldn’t figure out how to get all the pieces aligned until I watched this.
Glad I could help!
Wow Thanks my table looks way better now.
Thanks for this video!!!
Why are you wearing a glove on the hand that is not touching the chemicals? SMH
Thank you.
I would wear gloves to be safe, my neighbor uses WD40 and that shines it up for the season just fine till next year
Thank you for the video. I'd recommend a god, that's a dog backwards.
This was enormously helpful. Thank you so much!!
Don’t you just love it when the internet is actually used for good.
Thank You very very very much. You have answered our doubt. Awesome Video! Kudos ..Mom
So wear a glove on the hand that you don’t even hold the rag with…. Got it.
😂
You're awesome, thanks for this. The brackets are sold out so I'm going to try to use some strapping
Meh this is a brand new table , your comparison was of wet and dry. I will pass
My table was about 10 years old when I made the video. It did not have any rust on it so it worded well for me.
I used to work for a trader and when shyt got crazy and a bit overwhelming, he'd yell out to the desk "How do you eat an elephant?!" and we'd all yell back "One bite at a time." You obviously learned some valuable lessons and hopefully in spite of sounding like Grumpy Mrs. Klaus, you will feel proud of what you learned and did and will do more. Billy's are pretty tall so maybe you can discourage your cats from even going up or just place some plywood pieces over the gaps. You took your first bite of your elephant. Good luck with the rest.
The expression is "You can eat a whole elephant, as long as you do it one spoonful at a time". My Gran used to say this to me all the time. When the problem or task was taking longer, she would then add "Use a bigger spoon".
Thank you very very very veryyy much!! This reaally solve my unbalance single billy unit issue 🤣 phewww
This method will last truly about two months tops that's it, no rust protection the original paint enamel/ clear coat is gone thus speeding the oxidation state. I prefer to sand it down, prime repaint the furniture and getting two years out of it before I would consider doing it again.
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I’m about to install the brackets on my corner shelf now!
Thank you so much! This was very helpful. I too was going to start with the middle bookcase until I came across your video.
play at speed 1.5 you are welcome
Very helpful. Thanks for posting. Hope you don’t end up looking for a kitty magnet 🧲, lol.
Actually, the cats have never ventured up there!
Just about to orderer this exact same arrangement x2 and I had so many queries but as I had not been able to get a coherent response from Ikea I had all but given up on ordering the units. Thank you so much for posting this video as it answered everything and more. Best wishes from the UK
Excellent video. Just one question please. After fitting the corner unit what is the rough measurement along the wall the corner unit takes up before the non corner unit attaches? Hard to measure things when there is an angled corner bit. Thanks
Sorry for the late reply! It's about 22.5 inches from the wall the the non corner unit.
@@Jeano102 thanks very much
Thank you, so much! I had so many questions & you answered them all! Thanks for making the video & sharing.
Is this four separate shelves that are held together with brackets? I’m looking into making this purchase, too, but I don’t know if it would be better to just buy two Billy bookcases and a corner piece. Thanks for the video!
They are all separate shelving units. I secured each of the larger bookcases to each other with screws in the holes where shelves could go so make sure you have your shelf heights selected before you secure the shelves to each other.
Thanks for this, I'm considering a similar setup. Did you brace the units to the wall with the bracket or is it stable as it is?
Sorry for the late reply! Yes, I braced all the bookcases because I have small grandchildren.
Due to having to measure out 22" from the wall, I wonder if this really saves space? Looks cleaner but it may have been possible to use bookcases on one side and then used the other wall space for something else. Correct me if I'm missing something unique to your room.
I put doors on my units and when I butted the two larger units together the doors wouldn’t open. The doors sit on the front of the Billy shelves. They are not recessed. I’m going to look at IKEA next time I’m there and see how they did it. I still Have the tall narrow shelf I would like to do this with.
That could work just as well. I happened to like the angled look myself.
Thank you for recording and sharing this. Very helpful.
Excellent. Thank you!
thanks mom
This is has been really helpful as I am considering buying separate pieces! What have you done at the top to stop the cats falling down - ours like to climb too! Thank you!
I may try to make a short “part 2” video to show what I did. Stay tuned.
I will also be awaiting a part two for this. It was very helpful to see how the top looks before purchasing
I used a piece of black foam board cutting fit and nailed in place with finishing nails, like the ones you nail into the back piece. Works well for our 15 pound cats because the open space is small. It’s larger the way I did mine with just two large shelves butted up to make the corner, but they still do t fall through. My foam board fro Dollar tree has a white core, so I painted that black. I put some fake greenery up there to cams foliage the foam core piece. The piece is Lshaped so it goes over the edges of the large shelves in one piece
@@momgo60 did you ever get a chance to make part 2? Would love to see it!
@@dawnieb.7394 I did make it but have really been bad about making a video (that is the hardest part of any project for me!). I basically bought a 2ft x 2 ft square board of good plywood, set it on top of the corner shelf so one corner was sticking out. I drew a line where that met the shelving unit, cut that corner off (about 1/2 inche further back), put a small quarter round on that edge and then secured that piece into the wall using 2 brackets. Some day I will get that video done....
Works great for me!! Thanks. I did it out doors so no inhalation.
Thank you for sharing! But please wear gloves for both hands and entire process.
GREAT quick fix! THNX
Cool Trick! I will have to give this a try!
What's silicone spray?
It's basically a lubricant spray. It helps prevent cracking and drying and locks out moisture.
