    It is very sad to think that so many people worked on code breaking, and at the end of the war where told "Do not tell anyone what you have been doing for the past 4 years!" under threat of hanging or something else. So they could not brag about helping during the war. They could listen to friends talk about flying a plane over Germany or Poloist, or something, and not be able to brag about doing important things that helped end the war at least 1 year sooner! And to sink all of those U-Boats! It was code breaking that led to sinking over 400 of the German Submarines! And to the Germans thinking that Port De Calle is the correct invasion port. One man met his wife in 1946, got married, and never discovered they both worked at Bletchley park until they toured Bletchley Park in the 1980's, and then discovered they both worked there in 1945.

  • @Kangenpower7
    @Kangenpower7 Před 7 měsíci

    I had read someplace that the Germans in part of Africa, the English was told not to invade or bother one location. So every day, that location, they would transmit "No problems with section 9". And then the English can take that message and de-code it very quickly! As they said the same thing every morning at 9 am. Also it was said that the American codes where never broken! Also America was warned to not transmit the message such as. "To Enterprise" But if they wanted to put in to Enterprise, they would place that in the middle of the message, not the first line! And also they would end each message with something roughly translated as blaa blaa blaa. So at the end of each message was about 35 - 60 random letters. Like something to give a code breaker a headache! And make the code breaker think "It must be very important 35 letters? I wonder what it means?" When Halsey left the guys on the island in the Pacific in WW2, in 1942, to take off after a Japanese aircraft carrier heading to Alaska, (and Japan transmitted a long radio message, so not under radio silence). Halsey was sent a message asking "Where did you go? We need you at this island!" And the last 35 - 60 letters where translated as "Where the hell is Halsey?" To which Halsey was very upset, and then he knew the long message was transmitted by the Japanese not by "Mistake" but in order to get him out of the war zone, and on a wild goose chase to Alaska. He returned to Iron Bottom Sound very soon, and saved the day with all the guys at Henderson Field. One easy way to figure out the code on Japanese message was they always started with "To Suko Muru" or whatever the name of the ship was. So easy way to decode the first line, and makes the rest of the message easy to decode. I also wonder if they would lay mines, and see if the Japanese would tell everyone "New mines laid July 1 in area 7 north and area 68 west". Then the Americans can figure out what place they laid the mines, and now that is where the grid pattern starts. It really helps that the Japanese would describe to the minute what time the ships will arrive at a port! The English would lay mines in the Atlantic Ocean, and then listen in to the Germans say "Stay out of area 7 north and 48 west, because there are mines located there." and then know how to set up the grid pattern they are working on. Of course getting a Enigma machine from a weather boat that was located near Iceland really helped! Along with about 2 months worth of code books to decode all of those messages. This was stolen in 1942 time frame?

    Eight years ago, my son and I did the Bletchley Park tour, with this gentleman as the guide. We were totally captivated by the tour, and I have watched this video several times over the years since then. I am still totally impressed by the German machines, and more importantly, the people who were able to figure out the inner workings of the machines (recognizing the work that was done by the Poles on Enigma), and Lorrenze, so that the machines could be built to reliably mechanically decrypt the code and reveal the messages. A phenomenal achievment that impresses me to this day.
