2024 Toyota bZ4X First Small Road Trip
We took a little trip to Ohio to Jungle Jim's Market. It's 110 miles away so we did need to charge a public charger. There was an EVGO station 2 miles away and so we charged there. It was a great session! #bz4x #automobile #evgo #electricvehicle #toyota #fastcharging

2024 bZ4x Charging at an Electrify America Station
zhlédnutí 6KPřed měsícem
This was my first time using an Electrify America charger and wow was it so much better than EVGO. No wonder Toyota chose EVGO for free charging the first year. I have successfully used EVGO twice in the past two months because their chargers never work right. If I signed up for the EA pass I would have saved some money. The price per KWh would have been $.34 instead of $.56 if I pay the monthl...
2024 Toyota bZ4x on a 350kw EVGO station

I know I don’t sound too thrilled ha. I love the bZ4x but EVGO has not been kind to me. The unit by me worked once and now it’s been down for a couple weeks. I decided to drive 20 minutes further to try out the 350kw unit since that’s the fastest unit around. It’s free for me through Toyota so that’s why I keep trying to charge at EVGO. After 3 attempts it finally started charging. The first tw...

This unit worked fine after they fixed it but now it’s down again. I’ll now have to wait until I can get enough charge from the level 2 charger. #bz4x #evgo
2024 BZ4X First Fast Charge

Just got my 2024 Toyota BZ4X. I’m charging at an EVGO 50kw charger near me since it’s free for the first year. Want to see something specific with the vehicle? Comment and let me know! Check out my 350kw video. czcams.com/video/y5NQibwIuU8/video.htmlsi=gYc-tAEujEONI9Lq
Is that a FWD or a AWD version? I've got the AWD version and fastest DC charging speed I've seen is 90 kWH.
FWD. yeah the charging speed was a big factor in me getting the FWD.
Does the A/C run while you are charging the car? Is it nice and cold?
The AC does run and you can put it in Room Mode so it uses the charging station power instead of the battery. The AC in the bZ4X is the coldest I’ve ever felt in a car!
@@tyhend88 Awesome, thanks for sharing.
In Europe at home or at every corner no problem
Awesome! Thanks for watching.
Evs have to be shutoff to start a charge and stop. My 2012,leaf is the same I turn it on after charging starts and off when it’s done
@@markfitzpatrick6692 thank you for the insight. I figured since Tesla can plug and unplug while on that other EVs could too but looks like that’s not the case.
Thank you for this content. I am very interested in your bz4x content.
More to come! Thanks for watching!
What I forgot to say there is no tax on electric cars and you get 3600 from the community when you buy a new one
Ah okay!
We own a bz4xAWD and a new Defender … because combustion cars are incredibly expensive in Austria/Europe we pay about 2000 Euro a year only tax to run it. The Defender is made in the EU so they sell it because the tax is about 50% you can’t buy a Bronco, 4Runner…. The bz is loaded in our home garage 11kw per hour 22cents per kw there are charging facilities at modr shops up to 350kw per hour, our bz takes 100 per hour there (we rarely use that) it costs 55 to 65 cents per kw. We love our bz it’s a great car even if we are forced to drive electric! Greetings from Austria
Awesome! Thanks for watching and commenting!
Having electric vehicles is if you don’t have charging stations in your home is wasting money. It’s not for long driving. Don’t listen CZcamsr they get paid to. Better to invest your hybrids
@@user-lk3sy5gc7k I wish I got paid! I do agree a hybrid is a great option for long travels. You can get over 600 miles per tank on the Camry hybrid!
It depends where you live on the planet. We don’t have nuclear power in Austria 🇦🇹 wind and water power stations nearly everywhere and most homes have solar power panels. This is the way Europe chooses if it’s right we will see. We have no decision …. for the nature. For independence from the east this decision is clear
how do you average at 4.1kwh/mile? mine doing the best at 3.6
My commute to work is 45 miles round trip. Mostly highway. I set the cruise at 68mph and let the adaptive cruise do the work. I also do use the one pedal drive.
Hi, do i need to turn off the car before charging?
Nope! It'll turn itself off once the connection is made.
My 2024 BZ4X XLE AWD has a different layout on on the front display, the charging port door looks different, the climate control display doesn't change colors. What's going on there?
Is yours a US version?
@@tyhend88 Yes. Bought it in Seattle
How do you like your bz4x so far? Did you buy it or lease it?
I am loving it so far! It's an amazing feeling bypassing the gas stations. It's $3.59 a gallon here so I am saving a ton! I leased it. I would not finance it at MSRP. I leased mine with the $16,250 lease rebate. I plan on doing a video explaining how my lease worked out.
@@tyhend88 what are your monthly and total out of pocket? Trying to get a reference point for negotiating my own
And if you wouldn’t have sat leisurely at the EVgo @ $0.50/kWH and we’ll past how much you needed to get home you could have saved another $5 or so at a much lower at home rates.
For sure!
Thanks for posting Did I get this right. From 25% to 69% in 20 minutes?
That is correct!
Awesome Video! I am going to University soon, and think the BZ4X might be the perfect college commuter car for me! Love your channel btw😄😄😄!
Awesome! Thanks for watching!
My man is rocking the cargo shorts. Gotta love it.
I wear them in winter too hah thanks for watching!
Thank you for the video! I love my bZ4x
Hi what is the range on a full charge?
I got a bZ4x XLE, and I get up to 280 miles in a mixed driving (city/highway) scenario when not using air conditioning. With AC and driving highway only at 70 mph it’s less - like 220 miles.
I have been getting 260 miles at 100% this summer so far!
What if you have no phone? They should have a card system. Pay as you go charge card $10, $20, $30 card etc. Billion dollar idea here.
They do there is a credit card reader on the machine. They don’t have a rfid card
Yep you can swipe your card on most of the sites.
Thank You for All that you are doing for our Planet Earth... Peace.. Shalom.. Salam.. Namaste 🙏🏻 😊 ✌ ☮ ❤
How's the bZ4x so far? One of my neighbors brought one (same color as yours) from out of province. My old man's thinking of the Subaru Solterra which is more readily available.
I do like it! I haven’t bought gas since the first week of April and I’m thrilled about that. My electric bill hasn’t gone up since I can charge free at EVGO. I think it’ll go up slightly next year after the free charging ends. If you can get a good lease on the Solterra I say do it. But it’s kinda hard to justify financing and MSRP. Thanks for watching!
It’s the same cost at 50 cents per kWh but if you round trip from home probably 70% savings in the BZ 4x. There is no “ home gasoline” at $1.05 gallon. Safe travels.
That bz4x is just a toy from Toyota to please the EV fanboy's.
Thanks for watching!
this seems like projection
who cares😂? if YOU don’t like it, maybe someone else will😌
I think it is the perfect car for anyone that does not need more than 150-200 miles of driving range daily. Why pay for 300-350 miles of driving range if you don't need it? Let's be honest, other than the low range, what is wrong with the car? Looks is a subjective thing and when it comes to quality, no one tops Toyota. BTW, I am not a Toyota owner.
I fast charge every other day at Evgo. Not sure about the battery life. I hope it will serve me for 10 years.
Very long charging
It can be. Thanks for watching!
High tolerance for boredom you have! 😂
Haha I do public charging maybe twice a month. I do work remotely a couple days a week so I’ll plug in and work at a coffee shop while it’s charging. Once the charging isn’t free anymore, I won’t fast charge unless I need to on a trip. Thanks for watching!
$0.56/kWh??? Good luck winning over ICE owners at that price. What is that like $5 a gallon equivalent?
Do you need to fast charge every time you drive though? I charged at home last night. Put in 39kWhs at $.10kWh so that’s less than $4. Much better than and ICE vehicle. Yes traveling can be expensive but EA does have a $7/month subscription that knocks the charging price to $.34kWh. Check out my latest video I did of a small road trip. Thanks for watching!
@@tyhend88 Agree with you, but we/I are talking about the masses. I am an EV owner and all my ICE friends are always asking questions about EVs, (which is good)! But when I am asked about costs on a road-trip, for non-Teslas, availability, reliability, and cost of charging, they become somewhat disappointed. Yes home charging is great. I play $0.165/kWh. I am jealous of your $0.10/kWH.
Like he said he doesn’t have the cheapest plan . Read before commenting
@@markfitzpatrick6692Take a chill pill Mark.
So this EV doesnt show the charging speed in its driver's console? So if you're at a L2 charger which may not have a display, there's no way to know your charging speed?
That is correct. Nowhere does it show the speed of charging or consumption. The new Chevy Blazer and Equinox both show the power you are using and receiving in KWs. I hope Toyota shows data down the road.
The charging cost not cheap is roughly equal to gas price
For sure. If you don’t sign up for a monthly subscription for EA or another company then it’s a bit pricy to fast charge.
Bear in mind, though, most people charge 99% of the time at home where electricity is way cheaper than gas
@@mach1nefan Add to these savings, no brakes, no oil change, no potential engine or transmission failure, and boom, you're saving so much
Also depends on which part of country, there is no comparison in cost of charging vs pumping gas in west coast states, we have 2 cars, 2016 Mazda 6, currently average 27mpg, 2023 model 3 RWD. Gas per gallon around $4.2 now, electricity at .27/kwh (home) and most expensive time to charge at supercharger now at $.51. We average 4 mile per kwh, so to achieve 27mpg, we need 7kwh (7×4=28). Electricity at home $1.89 at supercharger $3.57 (this is the most expensive time to charge, less expensive time to charge around $.31kwh)
Where do you live? I live in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Our EVGO in Greensboro, NC is a 2 stall. Many Uber drivers charging there. We have a nice EA in Greensboro, NC. An 8 stall. I have free EA charging for 2 years with Hyundai. You have free EVGO. Nice. I have to drive my ICE Chevy Impala on road trips through West Virginia (4X a year) b/c WV is a charging desert.
I am near Indianapolis, Indiana. There are 3 EVGO stations within 20 miles of me. The closest one is my first two videos. It’s still down and has been for over a month. I keep asking them for an update but they can’t provide anything. I visit it once a week and leave a review on Plug Share every time. I’m driving to the Cincinnati area next week and will record the drive and data.
@@tyhend88 Okay, good. I'm sorry about the EVGO being down. I had a Shell Recharge/Duke Energy charger down near my house (and one near the Beach) and I called Shell Recharge both times. They finally fixed the one near my house after a long time. I drive by and check it and so far so good. Yup, I will watch content when you post it. Talk to you later.
Glad you like your EV. As I said, just subscribed.
I just subscribed to your channel. I own an AWD 2024 Ioniq 6 low trim and my husband owns an R1T. I enjoy watching EV owner content.
Hi Diane! Thanks you for watching and commenting. You both have great cars! This is my first electric vehicle and I’m enjoying it so far. The best part is driving past the gas stations and knowing I don’t have to stop and pay $3.59 a gallon. I am going to do a small road trip next week and I’ll post that video too!
@@tyhend88 Yes we are saving a ton on gas. I still road trip in my ICE Chevy Impala because I go to West Virginia 4X a year. Charging desert. We are driving the R1T to the Jersey Shore next month. I95 should be fine. Yes, looking forward to BZ4X content.
Maybe good topic for another video so won’t spoil in comments but keep hearing about great deal this car lease is but no one doing real world numbers. If you could go over lease process fees etc… and what you ended up paying would be awesome really considering getting this but people have so much negativity about it. I don’t know if that’s because they trying to travel in it or don’t just use in town and charge at home🤷🏻♂️
Great idea! I will work on a video showing that!
Is your BZ a fwd or awd?
FWD
@@tyhend88 - for anyone buying the bZ4X AWD / Subaru Solterra (they're all AWD), those models use a battery from a different manufacturer (the Chinese company CATL) that has been shown to be much slower than this one (a Panasonic / Toyota PPES battery). If you don't need the AWD (if you live in the snowy north and drive long distances in those conditions), get the single motor 2-wheel drive version as Tyler has done here. For a 355-Volt car, pulling 135kW in the charge shows it peaked at 380 Amps - very impressive for a sub-$60k EV.
There have been lots of complaints about the reliability of EA’s chargers. However, I have always been able to charge every time I’ve been to one. I drive an Ioniq 5 and I always turn off the vehicle before plugging in. As you mentioned charging at home is ideal. It is much cheaper and easier than going to either a fast charging or gas station. Save fast charging for longer road trips.
Why would you buy a car with a NIMH battery? (My mistake. They have LION)
Please show your source for the NIMH battery claim. Thanks for watching!
@@tyhend88 Oh gosh, you're right. It is Lithium Ion. Ancient in terms of technology, but good enough.
@@tonystorcke thank you for clearing the record :) I do know the hybrids have a NIMH battery.
Do you have the FWD or AWD version?
FWD
I just bought one for about 1 month! I charged the EV with many fast charge, mid 80s is the highest charge speed i have seen. Did some 200 miles trip back and forth.
Awesome! I saw 80kw for most of the charge. It’s not amazing but fine for me!
How do I set the charge limit to 80 % and lock this setting?
That’s a very good question. I have set mine to 80% in the menu but then it charges past 80% when plugged into AC power at home. I think the charge limit is for DC fast charging only. Toyota recommends charging to 100% when on AC power at home. It won’t damage the battery since they have a buffer at the top of the pack. Hope that helps.
Heard the FWD charges faster than the AWD. Done any longer trips?
Thank you very much for the video, very interesting. I am interested in purchasing this model. Greetings from Huelva, Spain
Thank you for commenting. I think you’ll love it!
@@tyhend88 thank you so much
EV no go.
It’s not for everyone but I love it so far!
@@tyhend88 it's good to have, but hard to love after you've tried the Tesla Supercharger network.
@@TAD-9 I do wish there was a Magic Dock near me be there isn’t. I hope Toyota does get access to the Supercharger network next year.
Hi Tyler, can you please show the process from the beginning, just bought the car and i have no clue at all what to do from navigating to , linking to payment
Hey there. I don't think I can make a video on it since I have already set it all up but here is what I did. I make my account on the Toyota app and added my bZ4x. I then downloaded the EVGO app and made an account. I then added my credit card info in the app. This is essential for the Toyota app to connect to the EVGO app. Then you make the connection in the Toyota app. Then you can set up AutoCharge so the car will charge as soon as you plug it in. Hope that helps!
Open the door to get the time to charge. Also, most efficient charging curve is starting at 10-80%. You can shorten your trip time by charging at a lower state of charge rather than trying to get to 100%. Charging to 100% is incredibly inefficient time wise. A Better Route Planner is a must app for road tripping in the BZ.
Thank for all the info! I do know about the charging curve. Since it’s free I wanted to get as much charge as possible since no one else was there. It got down to 9kw at 94% so I unplugged and finished at home for our camping trip this weekend.
Reading this should make you all realize why EV's will never have full adoption...
It’s not for everyone, I agree.
How is it? Any updates of pictures videos ?
It's great! I'll see if the owners will let me show the video.
@@tyhend88 That would be great! You don’t see a lot of video’s about them. Especially the white one. Yours is the only one!
