Career Landscape Workshop - May 23, 2024
Options are increasing for PhD recipients who want to pursue a career focused on undergraduate teaching. Most PhD-granting departments have introduced a teaching faculty track, often with academic rank, while many masters-granting and primarily undergraduate institutions are expanding their computing programs. Teaching-focused faculty often pursue research with undergraduates or research on computing education.
In this virtual workshop series, experienced and successful academic leaders, as well as junior faculty in different teaching-oriented positions, will compare teaching-focused career paths, highlight how to best prepare for teaching positions, and discuss how to effectively apply for different kinds of positions.
May 23: How do I apply for teaching-oriented positions?
Panelists:
Elba Garza, Assistant Teaching Professor - Computer Science & Engineering, University of Washington
Susanne Hambrusch, Professor - Computer Science, Purdue University
Ike Lage, Assistant Professor - Computer Science, Colby College
Tammy VanDeGrift, Vassallo Distinguished Professor of Computer Science, University of Portland
Moderator: Borja Sotomayor, Senior Instructional Professor - Computer Science, University of Chicago

Choose a job, or a Masters or a professional degree like MD, JD or PharmD. This will be better in the longrun and shortrun, financially, mentally, physically and emotionally. PhD will suck the life out of you. I learned many things in my PhD program but for the most part what I experienced in the program was not the biomedical sciences PhD level research education that I was looking for. I learned mostly about the nature of people ( good and bad). I learned about toxic cultures, politics, inductrination, manipulation, exploitation, racisim, hate, scare tactics, fraud. I learned that for some reason PhDs and MD's within an institute don't get along and don't collaborate. I learned that in academia they are focused on grants, power and politics and not education of students in the field of study that the students joined the program to gain expertese in. I also learned that most students who join PhD programs are very trusting and get manipulated easily by evil faculty and PI's, because those students dont have the basic scientific mindset to question things, investigate things and analyze things to determine if what they are being told is true or not. I learned that although academia is mostly super toxic, there are still some good people sprinkled among the many evil people. I left academia and dropped out of my PhD because of all the overwhelming negative things that I experienced in the program, but the experience did open my eyes, and it was a learning experience.

Hello friends, thanks for the clarification about the PhD. I have one major doubt. I recently completed my master's degree in computer science and recently received a part-time PhD slot from my college staff. I probably have 5 to 6 months to choose my PhD topic, but the major issue from my side is that I am working on a low-code platform. I have good programming skills, but the current trend for PhD skills like Python, machine learning, data science, and image processing is unknown. Can you suggest which platform I should learn that is helpful for my PhD and suggest some easy topics in that platform. I am eagerly awaiting your reply. Thanks in advance.

How will the master/slave dialectic of consciousness play out in the context of AI? If we remove the words that describe what humans will experience from transhumanism through posthumanism, we’ll be safe from AI for sure. We just need to remove the words, then the post-apocalyptic Deleusian nightmare machine can’t hurt us.

Absurd level of virtuous sensitivity of an EE. It is Bloody offensive to me to have such a triggering abolishment of rational usage of such a flipping, harmless concept. EE’s now must navigate thru social warrior muck now so that flipflops domustn’t falsely and digitally mis-trigger and fetch randomly the N word from dictionary memory in web storage. Heavens to Betsy, such an outrageous, meaningless horror. Roscoe, I think your students must want to obliterate all streets and avenues named after the Spanish conquistadors like Cortez and De Soto who enabled and created the slave trade in America. I am sure 500 years ago, whatever race might develop the Spanish naval technology would in that period would enslave another race for the economic advantage as all races have done for thousands of years. Uneven differences in technological advancement of the races was a key component in the slave culture. Certainly if the Japanese technology had advanced in the 1800’s to be much more superior to both China And the US, they would have enslaved both China and the settlers of the US.

Seems the comparison isn't fair in the analysis. A parallel processor with deep forward lookahead can perform execution much faster than a machine at more than 3x "flops" without the bells and whistles. The industry likes to tout the wrong things to consumers as if it were important, when it's not what is being improved. On this, there is linear stress problems that can occur, a single "activation" line (clock signal through a train of locks) can eventually reach a point that the mechanism will be unable to move at all. Then you have the "jostle" problem, where vibrations in the environment can disrupt and encode the wrong data along a given chain. I mean no offense, I'm really loving the idea of mechanical logic gates and computers....because they will be needed in the society of the future, in my opinion (it's far easier to produce in 3D print, which will be vital in space exploration and colonization, in order to replace key ship/base components).

    • @humanistwriting5477

I think you are making the unfair comparison, you are comparing a test feature with test architecture to a fully built and designed chip. Akin to comparing the physical tests of a steel I-beam to the brick and mortar construction that predated it, and your concerns will certainly play a role in chip architecture but they are not necessarily hard limits. I can think of a very simple solution, having the end of the clocking limit length activate a switch for the next length of clock, and too boot I am rather certain the future of computing is in utilizing and combining different systems based on thier strong suits not a monolithic single system I.E. instead of a single ALU built in chip having an analog low precision unit for calculations involving curve segments, a boolean unit that likely uses optical logic, and a base adder that very well may be mechanical, all working on concord, might utilize phase change materials with optics for storage etc etc etc whatever does the job with the lowest wattage and fastest performance for every task, rather then just using semiconductors in a single fab step. This would additionally make 3d printing thr components possible as well, but without the downsides.

Hi Hakim W, I really appreciate the personal perspective all the panelists presented, while maintaining a detached analytical approach, also guided by data: everything I've come to expect in quality professorial thinking. Hakim, I wish you would have a long talk with some of the hyper anti white Cornell faculty, who have become so obvious lately, though I have come to understand that they have been in situ for quite some time. No whites allowed p.e. courses, white exclusionary housing, and white shaming astrophysics... really? Your society is pouring huge amounts of money on Cornell; does your faculty not have the responsibility to be more academically rational? I could understand if you feel you are completely wrapped up in your own problems, but do you have any obligation to help them become less openly white hating? Consider the possibilities.
