Thats not enough to cover insurance taxes fuel etc. Materials and labor x3 is what I have seen most successful companies ask and get for their time.

He's not far off. For HVAC the rule of thumb is material x 2 plus 15% = total job but this can vary depending upon many factors, that's a starting point.

Just found you guys and I think you are awesome! I'm 54, just surprisingly terminated from my IT sales job. I pressure wash my own inground pool patio and I actually really enjoy doing it. I know I can serve potential customers well in this area. I know I don't want to "work for the man" at my age and am looking to get into something of my own and hopefully hire a hard-working teenager, or 2 to assist. I knew a contractor like this, he went out of business within a year because his local competitor was basically only adding a 25% upcharge. This was 15 years ago and the 20% guy is not only still in business, but massive. Went from 3 guys and a truck to like 10 of thier trucks all over town.

Trucks are stupid. A van is much better. How does your gear not get stolen?

This is exactly how all successful companies run things right? Just guess at how much to charge and throw a random multiplier out there. Why would you take the time to really figure out your costs and how much to charge when you can just double everything?

So if someone chooses more expensive materials you would charge them more in labour for same amount of labour..
