2023 Toyota GR86 FIRST IMPRESSIONS | POV Test Drive and Review

Had the opportunity to test drive a 2023 GR86 (base model). Overall it was a very pleasant car to drive and looks beautiful. The only gripes I have with the car are the turn signals, rev hang, and less than optimal throttle response with a lot of free play. Otherwise it's really an amazing car for the price point. I was just slapped with nostalgia. I lived about two miles from where that dealership is (it didn’t exist then but there was Triumph/Ducati and BMW) back in 2007 when I bought my first bike, which was the blue/white K7 600. I used to work at the Best Buy that you passed getting on 101 South. At the corner before the ramp you passed Twin Peaks! 🥲

casually nails it within the first couple tries lol. i still have trouble, but i personally like feeling a little jerk from the bike just so i know I'm in gear. i mean i guess u arent always gonna be perfect but the concept is so easy. I do it all the time
coming from a cbr500RA thinking about GSXR600 after a year of ownership, what are your thoughts?
I’d say go for it! I’ve been loving my GSXR, super fun to wring out and makes commuting enjoyable (except for super long rides). Honestly I would go for any modern 600cc you can get your hands on; they’re all very similar and comparable, really just up to you on which one you think looks better and fits you.

I'm kind of confused. Motojitsu tells you to apply some front brake when rev matching, but yammie noob tells you to throttle down before rev matching. So which of the 2 am I supposed to be doing???
As for throttle down before rev matching, you should always roll off the throttle before pulling the clutch in. If you are shifting down a gear to slow down then yes applying front brake while rev matching is optimal (similar to how you would heel toe in a car). But it’s not necessary especially if you’re shifting down to get into the powerband of the bike (like trying to pass someone for example). So it completely depends on which situation/scenario you’re in. But if you’re a complete beginner I wouldn’t even worry about rev matching, just apply brakes, shift down, and slowly release the clutch to let the RPMs get to where they need to be. Once you get more familiar with your bike you can start to practice rev matching and you’ll get a better feel for it over time.

@@sook_Oh yeah! I'm 16 years old and I don't own a bike personally but I have been riding other's/my friend's bikes for about 5 months now and I have learned rev matching too. I normally rev match without grabbing the front brake but a few days ago when I had to suddenly slow down the bike I subconsciously rev matched or blipped the throttle while simultaneously applying the front brake.
Imagine what. A. R1000r. Will do. Lookin. At 750z. Tweeked. 1000RZ IS "" INSANE "" BIKE. GO SUZY

Yes the throttle response is strange. You are not alone when you mentioned this as well as your turn signal comment. Ive had my GR86 since July 2023. I too noticed the same issues you have. I came from a 2006 Nissan 350z and downshift rev matching was a dream and ease to do in the car. A slight blip of the throttle would be enough to downshift into any gear but for some reason in the GR86 im having trouble finding consistent blips when downshifting. The turn signals must be pressed until you feel an click and it should be better.
I appreciate the feedback, and yes the turn signals are not a problem once you get used to them. Like you said, the throttle response is really the only real complaint I have with the car, otherwise it’s fantastic especially for the price (and even competes with vehicles miles above its price point). Even then, once you get used to the quirks which I’m sure you have, it doesn’t really pose as much of a problem. And speaking of the 350z, I actually ended up purchasing one recently (will be making a video on that shortly). Snagged one for a great deal, albeit a roadster but still a 6 speed :) You’re right, downshifting on the Z is extremely easy and rewarding, however the clutch is a lot less forgiving in terms of stiffness and the engagement point is way too high (could just be my car, will have to try and find a fix). Congrats on the car especially since they’re really hard to find lately in my area. Thanks for watching!

I’m looking at a gsxr rn for 7200 but I rode it and it felt slow . Like I was pinning in 4th and 5th and might of got to 125 not climbing like it should and I noticed a weird noise on take off in first. Do Suzukis have a distinctive sound to their motor?
Sorry didn’t see your comment earlier (CZcams hides stuff) but the sound you’re hearing from take off could just be the vibrations from the clutch plates syncing when you’re letting off the clutch (not entirely sure what the sound is you’re experiencing). If you’re too worried about it I’d find another one and compare, or get it checked out.

new BRZs are great for daily and beginner manual drivers, really good shifters, big trunk space, and more comfortable suspension than the gr86

Glad to see you're posting again! I followed you a year ago when I had been riding for almost two years, since then I've moved and couldn't bring my bike with me so its helped me watching motovlogs during the months I can't ride 😂 Kuddos to you for not giving up after stalling though (reminiscent of when I first tried riding, it was a KLR650, aka not a good starter for a girl with ZERO motorcycle experience, lets just say it took more than couple of days to try an get a the hang of the clutch haha), but keep us updated on your search!
