Most American smoke alarms have two serious flaws: They go off while you're cooking and they're too slow at detecting a new and deadly type of fire. Good news, the new generation of smoke alarms has finally fixed these problems.
Update: June 6. Kidde just launched 9th gen alarms at the end of May. I've added them below my top recommendations.

This in-depth guide will help you choose the best smoke alarms for your specific needs.

MY TOP SMOKE ALARM RECOMMENDATIONS: USA
Photoelectric alarms are still best. I talk about why in my guide above. Before buying, be aware of your legal requirements: search "your city" + "smoke alarm laws". I've purchased or at least through friends got hands on and extensively researched each model. Reviews for First Alert are bad because these are newly launched. Their old models have excellent ratings: amzn.to/45nw3QU
1️⃣ First Alert SMCO100V-AC || Top Pick for Hardwired Homes
Covers all the bases for modern homes and building codes requiring hardwired and interconnected smoke alarms. Check by removing your alarm, see three wire attached? It's hardwired.
This model has a photoelectric sensor + CO detector which also covers all building codes in the US. Has voice alerts telling you where the fire is.
►► amzn.to/3Vg7u3z
⁍No Carbon Monoxide Version ►► amzn.to/45i5ug0
2️⃣ First Alert SMCO500V || Wireless Protection
If your home doesn't have hardwired smoke alarms, this alarm uses wireless signals to interconnect your alarms together. All done on the smoke alarm, no phone or app is used.
If your smoke alarms are solo flyers, interconnecting them is a HUGE improvement in safety as it allows distant fires to sound the closest alarm to you. The version with carbon monoxide is cheaper (as of June 8th) than the same version without one 🤷
►► amzn.to/45i5MU8
No CO Version: amzn.to/3V6Xycs
Note some states require 10-YEAR Sealed Battery in new alarms and this alarm DOES NOT QUALIFY: AZ, KY, LA, MD, NC, OH, OR, PA, TX (Houston), VT, WI. Some states exempt wireless alarms from this rule: CA, FL, IL, IN.
If you need a 10-year battery get this:
3️⃣FIRST ALERT || Top 10-YR Battery Pick
CO + Voice alerts + Photoelectric + 10YR Battery which keeps your alarm running, no more annoying battery changes which also saves you money long term.
►► amzn.to/3KCUlNb
⁍ No CO: amzn.to/3Vg7AYZ
4️⃣ Nest Protect 2nd Edition || Smart Home Connectivity
If you're interested in smart home functionality like remote notifications for fires this is the model for you. Plus it self tests so you no longer have to push a button. Keep in mind 10-YR rules for the battery version.
Uses an advanced dual spectrum infrared photoelectric sensor and humidity detection for better false vs real alarm differentiation.
►► Hardwired: geni.us/NestProtectWired
►► AA Battery: geni.us/NestProtectBattery
⭐ KIDDE ALARMS ⭐
Kidde launched their latest 9th gen alarms end of May. These are the superior alarm for smoke detection as it has a more stringent PU foam and cooking nuisance test. My concern is their track record for reliability as they've had several recalls over the last 10 years, including their 8th gen Trusense smoke alarm lineup. Read my guide for more details.
If my friends ask for a recommendation, I point them to First Alert. I believe in the engineering and reliability of the brand.
1️⃣ KIDDE ‎30CUA10-V || For Hardwired Homes
Hardwired, CO Detector, 10-year battery, and voice alerts. You can save some money with the AA battery model but the peace of mind is worth it.
►► amzn.to/3VykumD
⁍ Same Model, No CO Detection ►►amzn.to/3RjB0UO
2️⃣ KIDDE 20SD10 || Just the Basics
A photoelectric smoke alarm + 10 year battery

    Victims, bystanders, etc always want to marvel about how "it's a miracle that they walked away completely uninjured". But it's not a miracle. *It's meticulous engineering designed to substantially protect the passenger compartment.* A lot of people worked really hard to make those "miracles" happen.

  • @sk8razer
    @sk8razer Před 18 hodinami

    I've been a paramedic for almost 15 years, and it's actually awe inducing how incredibly *SAFE* cars have steadily become, starting in the mid 90s or so. If the vehicle is like 2005 or newer and the occupant has sustained serious injuries, I can almost guarantee that it's because they either weren't wearing their seatbelt (properly) or they were riding with their feet up on the dash. In those cases, it's like the occupant has slammed into a solid stationary object (often head first) while flying along at high speed. And engineering has even worked hard to address the issue of seatbelt haters lol newer vehicles have a setting where the vehicle cannot be shifted out of park if the drivers seatbelt is not latched. Depending on the vehicle, this also applies to the front passenger seat if sufficient weight is detected in the seat. Of course, freak accidents do still happen and it _is_ possible to slip out of a properly worn seatbelt (and possibly be ejected from the vehicle) in a rollover. But overall, the safety improvements are just incredible!

    Annoying afffff when boomers and gen x look at modern cars and start whining about how they "sure don't make em like they used to"... Yeah, they're like 9 million times safer now _because_ of stuff like all that crumpled aluminum. And it's not _just_ that they're 900 99 million times safer, they're also way more fuel efficient thanks in part to all those cheap impact absorbing materials.

    There was zero reason to keep playing the alarm over and over. At best, it's obnoxious and pointless to show it going off so many times. At worst, it's super triggering and upsetting. In addition to the intentionally distressing sensory aspect, it's also a sound that's tied to an intensely traumatic event for for more than a few people out there. It's a sound that can be tied to losing everything especially irreplaceable sentimental items. To being trapped in a life or death situation. To getting horribly burned. To losing someone you loved. Not to mention all the guilt a lot of people feel over failing to prevent the fire or rescue someone/something. Even if you have zero experience with these alarms, you really only need to see it going off for no reason in the kitchen to get the feel. And for anyone who might want to comment saying "I loved hearing the alarm go off so many times! It added so much to the video!", *no you didn't*. You just love Andrew. And me saying something critical about the video is making you feel protective and defensive on his behalf. _I love him too, so I fully understand. But this particular criticism is actually really important, I promise._

    I'm NOT a fan of First Alert's battery-operated alarms. Twice now, I've had their products suddenly go into full alarm in the middle of the night with no way to shut them up (other than a hammer). Just happened to me this past week, AGAIN...and this smoke detector was a replacement for one which did the same thing just 3 years prior. Both supposedly had "10 year batteries", permanently sealed. It's bad enough to have one start chirping in the middle of the night. Going into full alarm and the silence button not working at 3am is completely unacceptable. So here I am at 3:30am, half-asleep, having to drag the ladder up from downstairs, climbing on top of it (half asleep) trying to get this POS off the ceiling. Then there wasn't any way to shut it up! Sure, there's a switch on the back, but that requires breaking some plastic tab off...which requires tools. again, it's 3:30 AM in my bedroom... A hammer in the hallway closet was the nearest tool, so that's what I used on it until it finally shut up.

    This is just why I installed a commercial fire alarm system in the house, I use a Hertek Penta 5000 Addressable FACP with Apollo XP95 smoke and heat Detectors with sounderbase, and I also use Apollo MCP’s. Those XP95 detectors sense small smoldering fires. I also got magnetic firedoors that releases when the alarm goes off and the system sends me a sms and email notification when a system trouble or alarm occurs. I all monitor this system myself.

    I have heard some people are against what I am going to call "Smart Sensors" in the 8th generation Ionization Sensors. The reason being that computer algorithms are not perfect, and if it is able to figure out if it is cooking smoke, on not trigger the alarm, then it could think it is cooking smoke, and not trigger the alarm, even if it is a real fire. This also makes no difference that ionization sensors still don't work at all with very thick smoke.

    Interconnection might be great if you have a very large house where you can't hear an alarm from the other end of the house. Or if you're the type that's immediately going to flee from every little beep and stand outside on the phone with the fire dept while your house burns down. Same type of idiot who tells the dispatcher his smoke detector is going off and causes a code 3 fire response when it's a CO alarm which he could have handled himself. Me, I want to know immediately WHERE the fire is so I can put it out before major damage is done. Interconnection means I have to walk the whole damn house before learning anything. And I could become trapped in the process. Whereas if it was a single alarm beeping I'd be able to tell by sound whether a given path was safe.

    Due to strict regulations, ionization detectors in the European Union are now only used in exceptional cases. However, the risk potential of a single detector is low when used and disposed of properly. Normally, ionization detectors are completely harmless due to their low activity. After a fire, the debris must be searched for missing fire detectors. If not all detectors are found, the entire debris must be disposed of as hazardous waste according to radiation protection regulations (at least within the EU), which can cause significant additional costs after a fire department intervention. Searching for the detectors is not always easy. With Geiger counters, there is hardly any chance of finding them under a layer several centimeters thick.
