    I'm not sure that the absolute value of a definite integral is equal to integrating the absolute value inside of it. Timecode: 7:27. Maybe, I got something out of my sight.

    • @WeAreShowboat
      @WeAreShowboat Před měsícem

      @@maxsolomakha4447 That’s a great point. You’re right. The absolute value of an integral is not equal to the integral of the absolute value of the integrand if the integrand changes sign. So you just have to break the integral up into pieces which have different signs and subtract. Like what I do for the loopy one at 15:23. So this approach still works you just have to be careful not to add pieces which are actually cancelling each other out.

      @RobRaptor49 Před měsícem

      @@WeAreShowboat I'll have to look at some of NOAA's datasets for oceans. To a geologist, the next issue is time. Having a correlation over a few decades is provocative but far from conclusive. And +0.3 C could easily be in the natural variance, especially during an inter-glacial period near the max temp. Where can I find answers to that question?

    • @WeAreShowboat
      @WeAreShowboat Před měsícem

      @@RobRaptor49 Yes, NOAA has tons of data available. Go through it for yourself. Don’t just blindly trust other peoples analysis. It’s definitely possible that some of the warming is due to natural variance, even the IPCC only claims that it is “mostly man made” since there is always natural variance.

    Hey David! Earlier today I watched your Work and Energy lectures on the Khan Academy MCAT, and loved them. It was like a rap physics lecture, the beat went so hard for me. Loved it So I went to see if you had a CZcams channel, and found this. I binge watched the philosophy/critical thinking/non-physics videos, and have loved them all a ton! I think they're thought out very well, and that kind of content is right up my alley. I love that you're kind to both sides, represent arguments fairly, and define your terms. I'm super excited to read the book. Two things I wanted to say: - Is there anywhere I could find your beats used for the lectures? Unironically I would listen to them more - I see you don't post philosophy content too often, I'd really love to hear more of your thoughts on stuff. Also, I'd be interested in a reading list if you feel there are some books in particular that most shaped your way of thinking. Another thing about the Conflation of Rights. While I agree the four or five independent definitions of the word 'right' is indeed likely playing an independent causal role in logical fallacies and arguments, I suspect that the ego, and one's identity, is actually at the root. For example, your Orange Man Bad fallacy may actually most stem from someone identifying with the Orange Man in some way, and then what we identify with, we protect, because that identity has helped us in some way. Like providing organization to the world, meaning, or a sense of purpose. And we defend things that are good and help us, and protect that from others that want to harm what we view as good. I'm not sure the confusion about the particular connotation of 'right' is soley what's happening. I do think it matters though. If I tell myself "I can't exercise today" and my lifting friend says, "No, you just don't want to exercise today" there's a part of me that's like "ahhh shoot, yeah you're right" and feel a little embarrassed, and I'm a little more intellectually and emotionally honest with myself. I think me using the word 'can't' is just my logical brain being hijacked by the emotional part of me that doesn't want to, and latches onto the closet word to articulate that feeling. So my point is that while I agree differing definitions (and conceptions and experiences) associated with words is at the root of at least 80% of arguments I've seen, I also feel that our subconscious seeks to defend the identity (our political party) and hijacks the logical brain to select for certain arguments to support it.

    • @WeAreShowboat
      @WeAreShowboat Před měsícem

      @@N22883 Wow man, I’m honored you enjoyed my videos! Yes, I’ve been thinking more about why people conflate rights and there likely is a large component of simply what Daniel Kahneman calls the “substitution rule” where you latch onto what is convenient or at the ready. He has a classic book called “Thinking, Fast and Slow”. But Johnathan Haidt’s book “The Righteous Mind” has been the most influential book for me. It should be required reading for everyone. I think my music is on an old site called Bandcamp if you search We Are Showboat. I want to make more philosophy videos and debate people but no one will agree to debate me lol 😂
