7 Best Nursing Jobs For Older New Grad Nurses
In this video, I break down the jobs that I think are some of the best for older new-grad nurses. This is an update from the previous two videos I made on this topic. Instead of focusing on jobs just for new nurses or jobs just for older nurses, I'm discussing good jobs for new nurses who also happen to be older nurses.

School nurses have to handle all sorts of situations. You’re going to have special needs kids to care for; kids with severe mental and physical disabilities, and dealing with angry parents upset they’re gonna need to pick their kid up from the schoolhouse isn’t a fun task either. Let’s not forget you might be the only nurse maintaining vaccination status records for school administration also. You got hundreds of kids who have medications they take during set times. Some of these kids won’t report to you to take their meds and you’ll have to send reminders to their classrooms to get them to comply with medication. And that’s not even the half of it. You’re also going to have young female teenage students having their period or having STI’s that haven’t been properly diagnosed; teen pregnancies, in school sex assaults and other crimes or incidents like that to deal with… yet most these things will be an automatic trip to the ER, but you could be that first person they report to. If you’re thinking a school nurse job will always be cake you’re highly mistaken, and the pay is usually extremely shitty, even if you’re getting the summers and holidays off.

12 hour shifts suck. No matter how you look at it, the bodies circadian rhythm is thrown off by sacrificing working nights. If you have to go in at 5am til 5:30pm, depending how far your commute, you're technically up 14 hours. When you rotate and have to work 5:00pm to 5:30 am, its the same but your circadian rhythm makes it difficult to sleep during the daylight hours. Hence you're up 24 hours when you're on the 5:30 pm shift. Pay close attention to the physicality of the workers. They most of the time look worn out and restless because they are. My opinion 12 hour shifts benefit companies and your productive life gets the sacrifice especially if you're not accumulating sick time because rotating 12 hour shifts will definitely wear you down over a short period of time.

I always drag my feet of going back to school particularly LVN because I’m not comfortable being around with younger students and I’m so busy taking care of my kids and family. I’m planning to start my pre-requisites this coming fall and see if nursing is what I wanted. I thought about to wait till I am 40 when my kids go to school. But I don’t wanna wait that long my memory is not as sharp and good now. I want to have a stable job by the time I am 40. Thank you for this informative and inspirational video. I am in CNA Training right now. I take the test on 8/8. I had my first 3-day clinical last week, and every day was a red flag. 1 day, people called in, Day 2 - A girl showed up to work crying, and oh yeah, people called in, and 3) Someone asked me if I was pregnant because of my weight. To make it worse it was my Transgendered Cousin (no joke) and she would not stop.

If I had a choice in my full-time work schedule, my number-1 pick would be 12-hour shifts (4 on/4 off). Most people would say that 12-hour shifts are pretty long (and I may agree with that, at least compared to your typical 9-5 job). But, at least I’m only working half the days. By the time you get through your 4 consecutive work days, your 4 consecutive “off” days may feel like a vacation all its own. You could easily take a weekend getaway without even touching your vacation time!
