How long did you have it?
This was probably 5 years old, so definitely beyond its industry-appointed lifetime!
You’ve managed to make me even more keen to get on the Lyn next term! Need to rally up asap
Best river in England! Get yourself up here!
Virgina tech does scientific whitewater helmet safety test and rate the helmets from best to worst. Its called Virgina Tech Star helmet test. They started testing with football helmets but have since branched out to test helmets in other sports.
That's cool. Yeah, probably far more scientifically valid than this. I was just intrigued to see what level of damage it could actually sustain!
Yep, another thing to add. Whitewater helmets also are very low on the list if not last when it comes to protection.
That's so smooth! Heck yeah
Thank you. Helps that it was a small Rewind!
C'est une dingurie
🤪
This looks awesome. I want to get here with some juice in it !
It's a banging little section!
i can do it without hand paddles
That's awesome! Well done!
That looks very fun
Nothing better than simply messing around in boats!
@@MatthewBrookKayaking exactly:)
That looks fun to try
Don’t know if it’s my end or the video but sounds is all weird
Yeah, sadly the mic on my GoPro is becoming increasingly defunct. It's not you!
@@MatthewBrookKayaking 👍👍👍👍. Nice moves all the same!
I muted the video
Respect my dude you can tell you been out on the water putting that time in.
Not as much as I'd like, but thank you!
Beautiful , but Not an easy sport
Very true. Not easy, but worth persevering in!
What a Classic section! So many good moves and sooo beautiful!
Too true. That could be reason 11; I didn't really mention the satisfaction of any of the individual moves/rapids!
All i heard was that i do indeed need to buy a new rewind. Im not insane right?!? lol
I cannot be held responsible for any sudden boat-buying urges you may experience...
Hand paddles wtf
Fairly common as a backup option.
Another Excellent video Mathew, can't wait to head down south and get some laps in with you at some point! It has to be the Swale for me, it is such a good section!
Yeah, deffo. You've got to get down here! Ah yeah! Love the Swale. Such a good bang-for-buck section!
Fianlly nailed my roll and got my combat roll with a normal paddle, I just got a pair of hand paddles to slowly introduce myself to them thanks for the video! not much info on them it seems. Im a swimmer and they feel very natural to me when I tired a friends pair out.
That's awesome! Keep it up. Yes, I definitely find it to be a very intuitive intermediate step on the way to a handroll. Really useful tool. Enjoy!
Sooo cool makes me excited to paddle
Glad to hear it! That's always my aim.
What a great watch, can't believe I haven't done it , definitely one to tick off
Glad you enjoyed it! Absolutely! Get yourself down here!
I wish i am able to whitewater kayak one day im only young and have no free time so i cant for now
Give it a try! You might find you suddenly have no time for anything else! 😉
Great review, thanks. Also, in between boats and demoing. I'm not sure if you've compared Rewind with Ripper 2? Or even the new Indra, but I'm sure it's not comparable as it's a totally different boat
My pleasure. Glad to be of help. I'm afraid I've not spent much time in a Ripper 2, certainly not on comparable water, and no time at all in the Indra. But, as you say, I think the Indra sits in a completely different category.
@MatthewBrookKayaking Great video, thanks for that. Also what video equipment do you use/recommend for use with Kayaking? Thanks in advance
My pleasure. Glad you enjoyed it. I use a GoPro for lots of stuff, purely for the practicality of it being waterproof and easily portable. But if I'm needing to do talky bits or static shots, I'll often use a DSLR and a lapel mic for audio. Just got to make sure you have appropriate dry bags/cases to keep everything safe.
@@MatthewBrookKayaking Ok that's great I am looking into getting a GoPro hero 12 black and seen some negative comments on GoPro these days so thanks for that. Cheers
Nice video bud! Really helped get it snappy!
My pleasure. Glad to have helped! Look out for the follow-up video coming soon.
HOW
Years of messing around!
I think I have fallen into the camp of too much crunch forward and not enough heel drive down! gonna try to tweak my technique some more and get vertical 🤙
Nice one! Keep at it and I'm sure you'll get there!
I tried it for ages and I found the ploughing ended really tough. Much easier to learn a double pump in the end. Was it something you learnt in moving water first?
That's entirely understandable. To be honest, the plowing ender is something I rarely ever use. To me it's more of a party trick or (as you say) something to apply in a whitewater context. Besides anything else, I don't think it looks particularly cool! Haha.
Jeez I ride fast bikes and think I have guts, than I see something like this and it makes me feel very small 😂
Different strokes for different folks. Bikes give me the heebie-jeebies!
What are your thoughts on the rewind vs the ripper 2?
I've not spent all that much time in the Ripper 2, certainly not on comparable water. So I can't really give an opinion. Sorry.
Missed your tutorial videos! Thank you. I learned everything almost I can do in kayaking from your videos.
Wow! I don't really know what to say to that! Thank you so much.
One cool trick I saw in a Eric Jackson video that works for me is paddling just slightly forward when whe stern is under water and giving it some "diving time" so to speak. After one or two strokes you can then give it all you have and paddle forward. This helped me get vert. in my freestyle kayak. I would love a tutorial / showcase on some downriver moves that are a bit out of the box like your chill surf shown in the intro :)
That's a great tip. Would definitely help with avoiding burnout on this trick. As to the downriver moves, I have some bits in the pipeline, but I've also already put out a top 5 wave party tricks - it's in the tutorials playlist.
❤
Nice
Thanks. Tricky to find spots like this round here!
Just got myself one of these to replace my Jackson one. One thing I've never seen is someone doing a side by side for moves like loops in place like inlet gate with and without the thruster. I would ask you to do it, but you've gone full slice! 😂
Nice! Possibly finding someone who is more consistent too might help. I feel like my moves have too much variation to make it a fair test!
I'm late to the party! Looking awesome man!
Thanks. Very grateful for your advice along the way!
@@MatthewBrookKayaking no worries at all! I just need to get better at following it myself... 😂
Thanks for a great video! Is there a move for the opposite situation - having the bow of the kayak down and the tilting beyond vertical? I alway land on my face on those situations.
No worries. Hmm, you're the second person to ask that question. I'm quite sure there's something to deal with that situation, but I'll need to have a bit of a play!
@@MatthewBrookKayaking There is, and really it's a squirt boat move. I think it's called the Washout.
You got a nice wide variety of shots in this one. Must have taken a while. Looking sweet!
Thanks! Yeah, it was a few sessions of setting multiple cameras. But I'm very glad I did!
Nice, I need to try that on purpose. Done them by accident when saving a stern stall but, didn’t realise it was its own trick. I was going for flat water lunars the other night in the nova. Very hit and miss if I’d get that bow fully vertical. Do you reckon it’s possible to get a bow screw up? Or reverse screw up?
Nice one! It's a fun trick; well worth practising. Hmm, bow screw ups. Good question. I'd say almost certainly doable, but I don't know how visually impressive it would be. I'll have an experiment!
Great tutorial. My Nova has helped me improve my screw ups.
Glad to hear it. Better that than the other way around - screwing up your improvement! Haha.
So "screw you" is a nice thing to say in this context? :)
Hmmm, might depend on the person. You wouldn't offend me in context, but some people might be less agreeable! Haha!
I’m heading down to camp near Newquay over summer and hitting some surf in the eves. Having only been in WW I was going to take my playboat. Would you recommend taking the super nova instead?
Good question. You'll be fine in either, I expect. Just find a quiet spot, if you can. Lots of people in the water in summer.
What kind of kayak is that? Bra I want to get one and pump it off a cliff, that's wicked
This is a Dagger Rewind, which is fairly typical of more playful modern whitewater kayaks. And I wouldn't suggest doing anything like this without getting some good instruction and building up your skills first; it's a high-risk sport.
@@MatthewBrookKayaking your sincere advise has been ignored upon reading. I'm going to send it
Duly noted!
Wow, great move, looks so fluid and controlled. Love my Rewind downriver. I bought a large but a bit worried it might be too big for me if I'm honest. Can't get the stern down like I can on the medium.
This was one of the few good ones from many attempts! Haha! Yeah, it's tricky. Depends what you want the boat for, I suppose. Is it more of a playboat for you? Or a river-runner?
I got my nova 1 year ago and it is absolutely amazing! I progressed my slice-game by a lot with it
That's awesome dude! Thanks for sharing!
What is Nova like compared to the Jackson Mixmaster?
I have only used a Mixmaster once, and I wasn't overly enamoured with it, to be honest. But I couldn't do a fair comparison, as it was so long ago.
Steeeezzzzyyyyy😂
Something like that...
Damn, I love my nova. Still also haven't got that clean loop with it but I guess I'll have to try it out what you did there
Yeah, I think trying to do that poppier, more modern style loop where you jump up just doesn't work. Has to be the more old-school, shallow alternative!
Just listened to your interview on the shuttle drive podcast. What a great story and footage to go with! How are more people not watching this!?
Thanks. That's very kind of you to say so!
Nice, I need to try that in my super nova. But, to be fair my flat water loops need work first :)
Some kind of thruster/airbag would make this a lot easier, I think. It's really close to being very manageable!
Certainly worth ago. How do you find cartwheels in this? I’ve struggled to link ends but, now have no issue in my playboat.
