Ep 232: Mazda Rebounds, Freshened Explorer Impresses, Chicago Ford Assembly Turns 100
Jill Ciminillo and Tom Appel opened the show noting that Chinese electric-car maker BYD is exploring developing a retail network in Canada. Tom explained why the Canadian market would be friendlier to Chinese imports than the U.S. The hosts went on to discuss recent U.S.-market sales growth for Mazda. The Japanese maker had recently made public its intention to take the Mazda brand upmarket, and early sales of its CX-50 and CX-90 models suggest that the project is successful. Tom also shared some fun data on the cities in which the Car stuff Podcast is most popular. (Hint: City number five isn’t in the U.S.)
Jill shared her take of the freshened 2025 Ford Explorer, the maker’s popular midsize 3-row crossover. Jill shared her drive impressions, plus explained why the updated SUV is offered in fewer trim levels for 2025.
In the second segment, Jill and Tom are joined by Ford Heritage Brand Manager Ted Ryan. Ted shared the history of Ford’s Chicago Assembly plant. The historic factory turned 100 years old this year, and is steeped in brand history. Listen in for a list of Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury vehicles built at the plant.
In the last segment, Jill is subjected to Tom’s “Was it a Ford?” quiz. Tom also briefly shared his impressions of the Lexus LC 500, and Nissan Z Nismo.

    For the price the tech is fine, it actually remote starts without having to stand two feet away from the vehicle and will adjust interior temp according to outside temp and not require u to preset that prior to remote starting. It’s the largest interior volume by far in the midsized group and the bed doesn’t require reinforcements to add a rack with weight on.

    @Dusdaddy Před 8 dny

    Yeah, that tech, well, it just sucks. Why have adaptive if it doesn't take you to a full stop then accelerate again? That's no better than standard cruise with a "pause" button. And just watching you use your mirrors way more than the BU camera tells me that the camera is inadequate. Considering what is out there for tech from other brands, this is terrible. I know Honda is conservative but it's not like adaptive cruise and rear cameras are new.

  • @emmalab02
    @emmalab02 Před 9 dny

    I’m a big fan of the Ridgeline, but the last two times I drove one the interior felt like it was from the mid 2010s or so and reminded me of the 2017 CRV EX-L I bought new in 2017 and got rid of 7months later. The cluster is dumb. The infotainment system is barely different than the 2017 CRV EX-L. The adaptive cruise has some scary ghosting, but will also not recognize a car being stopped up ahead until it is painfully close to not being able to emergency brake. The lane keeping ping-pongs too much as well. All the tech I mentioned in the Ridgeline is roughly the same as was in my 2017 CRV; probably the same hardware too. From a tech perspective Honda has been a laggard in their product development and updates for way too long.

  • @ALMX5DP

  • @NMTRUCKER
    @NMTRUCKER Před 9 dny

    With the adaptive cruise control on, and say a vehicle cuts in front of you, does the vehicle turn on your rear brake lights as it decelerates? This would give the vehicle in back of you a visual warning that you’re slowing down. I have the adaptive cruise control on my GMC SIERRA 1500, and really like this technology, but I don’t know if it turns on the brake lights upon deceleration. Also the half digital half analog instrument cluster might be due to parts shortages. Nice video. 👍

    • @ALMX5DP
      @ALMX5DP Před 9 dny

      I'd imagine with ICE vehicles that the brake lights turn on when the brakes are depressed or activated by whatever electronic system able to utilize them.

    • @Dusdaddy
      @Dusdaddy Před 8 dny

      From what I understand, if the brakes are applied to slow down, the brake lights come on. If the system can slow down sufficiently without brakes, then no brake lights. Basically, the same way it would work if you did the same.

  • @jamesey6

    Seriously considering a Ridgeline, but the lack of tech/outdated tech is a major downfall for me. I'm not surprised by the lack of extras you get with the Ridgeline because I've owned Hondas in the past, but man would it be nice for them to finally give the consumer something cool on the entertainment cluster to help warrant the higher price for once. Mechanically sound vehicles, but is having a 360 degree camera on the Ridgeline asking too much?!?! 😕

    the problem with the MDX is visibility, because once your car is longer than 195 inches and the hood is flat and long, it cuts into your road visibility. i drove the 2023 Advance at the time it was new. Coming from the 2011 MDX, my MDX is a shorter vehicle and I was able to notice the lack of front visibility. While I am aware the MDX is a bif long and wide -heavy car. the new MDX in trims below the Type S, feel slow. My mdx from 2011 has 300HP with the 3.7, so its effortless acceleration and smooth shifting. The advance MDX felt slow when shifting since now the car has 10 speeds. I am not an engineer but if the MDX in 2011 had a 6 speed and it was a gas guzzler, how come now the car has 10 speeds and the car still a gas guzzler? and worst yet it feels slow?

    Listened to your Podcast review and then jumped to this video: nice job! My Type S was built in February, and still has Sirius/XM as an audio channel FWIW... I prefer not to pay for it in any form. I mostly like the tech in this vehicle, particularly the logically arrayed actual buttons on the dash for HVAC and seat heating/cooling (the "auto" setting for the seats is a nice feature I haven't seen before), on the console for volume and on the steering wheel for audio, adaptive cruise, etc. I have gotten used to the touchpad ... I think it's actually quite good when using the native Acura GUI, but agree it falls apart when using Android Auto. I've also gotten used to the pushbutton shifter. The electronic parking brake is 180 out from the others I have used (Audi's and Volvo's) in that you pull the button to DIS-engage it, but I got used to it after a couple weeks -- that was actually the steepest learning curve for me. No issues with the QI pad here... I wonder if your tester has a defective one. Overall I am loving this car, and its rarity adds to the appeal for me. In my northern Virginia DC suburb, I've seen more Tesla Cybertrucks on the road than TLX Type S's of any year.
