Charlie is from a line of VCs and I have never owned a dog. We are learning together.
I created this channel as a way of sharing videos with a friend/pro trainer so he could help by providing feedback after my family & I moved overseas when Charlie was 11 months old. Upon reflection, I am especially thankful I recorded these sessions as I think they will be valuable tools down the road when I train my next dog, but I do wish I had more videos of the training we did before we moved (recall, whoa post, field work, steadiness on birds, etc...).
Charlie is an exceptional dog. Her ability to quickly learn, and apply new skills in different environments is truly impressive. Any shortcomings in her performance are singularly a reflection on me and my nascent skill as a trainer and handler. I have much to improve on, and I am certain anyone with more experience can quickly point those areas out.
Again, I made this channel to help our training. If it also helps you, that is even better.

Progressed to having the water in sight and the heeling to the water. Much tougher for her. You can see it in how long it took her to get her off the chain gang as well as in her breathing. It was a good day. Good building block.

After two warm up sessions and time on the chain gang, we worked on the heeling to the water and remaining steady. I think she did better than yesterday and I think keeping her on the chain gang until she fully settled down was key.

She wasn’t fully joined up after the first session so we did another round. I think this one went better. Afterwards I put her back onto the chain gang for a bit until she settled back down.

After watching yesterday’s videos and thinking about yesterday’s session, I decided Charlie was never really joined up from the start. So today I left her on the chain gang until she gave in and settled down. It took a little more than 30 minutes. I read my book about 15 feet away from her during that time. After the warm up drills she went back on the chain gang for a few minutes before we attempted to heel to the water and work on steadiness.

She’d been on the chain gang for about 15 minutes near a swamp where we’ve done a lot of training and hunting before this video starts. In the video, I’m trying to get her focused and lined up with me before we continue with the remainder of the training session.
