Swiss Schynige Platte Railway & Grindelwald's Firstbahn SPB BOB 1968
This electric hauled Berner Oberland-Bahnen route connects Wilderswil, near Interlaken, with the famous wildflower gardens of the Schynige Platte along 7km of 80cm narrow-gauge track, climbing 25% gradient Riggenbach rack.
The upper station has hiking paths to access nearby valleys. Adjacent Grindelwald is accessed by First Bahn, which was Europe's longest chairlift. This film captures it's Ludwig von Roll’schen Eisenwerke pioneer designed, unique 1947 vintage switching sideways chairlift, which in 1991 was replaced by a modern gondola.
This original 8mm cine film captures the Swiss summer tourism scene in 1968. It is accompanied by Paul Russenberger's voiced narration from 1999.

Steam train ride on BRIENZ Rothorn Swiss railway BRB 1968

A rare working steam route, built for tourism but off season, it still serves the midpoint Planalp's remote village commute. From lakeside to forest, to alpine pasture, ending 100m shy of the summit, a string of either oil or coal fired steam hauled single carriage sets, photogenically climb Abt rack in sequence. I was born in the 80's so missed steam on the mainline by 20 years. I caught the bug from my late Dad, and have always loved railways. I first discovered Alan's videos a few years ago, absolutely remarkable footage and a goldmine for folks like me, capturing as you say - a bygone age. Thank you for your ongoing work to share Alan's legacy with the world.

P.S. Queen of the South was originally called Jeanie Deans and was a sister ship to P.S. Waverley (though Waverley was built sixteen years later). The funnels had the old LNER colors of red and black tops separated by a band of white between the red and the black. Unlike Waverley, Queen of the South (QoS) was manned by amateurs (except one officer who was Merchant Navy as was required by law), this included the captain (who had a masters ticket but had only done screw driven ships, paddle steamer were much more difficult to control). The ship did voyages to Southend but only completed seven trips. QoS lasted two seasons and bankrupted the owners. Waverley, which is properly crewed did a large (and still do) number of voyages over the same stretch.

Many thanks for these memories. Used to go to Allhallows from Gravesend in the late 1950s summers where there was an open air swimming pool. Trains were an H, C,or a Q1. The last train I took on the branch I remember was hauled by a class 33 but still using the steam push pull stock. Delays on the electric services were often unfairly blamed on the 'Allhallows flyer'.

Southern steam finishe in July 1967 when the Bournmouth line was electrified, this was the last steam in the capital as Nine Elms closed to steam. What is special a out this particular service is that it was the last steam hauled suburban service in London. I may be wrong here but before this suburban service went the last one to go wa North Woolwich to Palace Gates, that was steam hauled until September 1962 when Stratford shed close to steam, the line was diesel hauled until January 1963 and then closed to passenger services but l Iingered on with goods trains till October 1964.

What a blast from the past of my local line. I was born in '72 and just about remember when the Tyne Valley line initially headed west on the north side of the Tyne (via Scotswood), rather than as now, on what was the freight only line on the south of the Tyne. I just watched a cab ride video of the same line back in 1987 when the Class 156 super sprinters had just come into service. 37 years later and those same Class 156s are still used on the route!

Very nice and interesting footage, thank you for uploading. Something I have to point out: There is no mixed use of German and French on the warning sign for the trams. In Switzerland, we use the word "Tram" in German, not just in spoken dialect, but also in our form of written standard German. The word "Strassenbahn" isn't used at all.

As always quite a fascinating view into the past Do you have a few more seconds of the train at 1:00? I can't quite place the freight car behind the railcar. It almost looks like a container car 1:33 the rackrail is actually enough to keep the railcars on the track by itself. The last Bhe 1/2, delivered in 1961 and the new Bhe 2/2 from 2022 got rid of them As last weeks video was on the VRB, I was kinda hoping the ARB would get the chance this week. Do you have video of it? The ARB in 1958 is quite more interesting compared to the VRB, as the later looked quite the same until two years ago
