How to Know If You Have an Eating Disorder
Sometimes it's actually pretty difficult to know if we're developing an eating disorder.. I've gotten DMs from people before, worried that they actually had an eating disorder. In some cases, the people who DM me actually DON'T have indicators of an ED (For example, just because you are skinny doesn't necessarily mean you have an eating disorder / anorexia).
In other cases, behavior and thoughts of people DM-ing me ARE indicators of underlying eating disorder behavior.
It can be tough to tell.. my hope is that this video helps guide us closer to answering the question of whether we might be developing ED behavior or not.
Why is this important?
Because time is of the essence when it comes to eating disorders.
If you can CATCH these types of behavior early, you can make a gameplan to turn things around. Past a certain point in the process of eating disorders, things get a WHOLE lot more complicated..
My hope is that this can help people answer that question as early as possible!
It's important to remember two things through this whole video:
1. I'm NOT a doctor or professional eating disorder recovery specialist. I'm simply a guy who went through recovery and learned a LOT through it all
2. Even if ONE or a COUPLE of these add up, it DOESN'T necessarily mean that you indefinitely have an eating disorder! This isn't a diagnosis, it's more-so something to get the brain working - something to get us to ask ourselves some tough questions.
If you have any questions at all, feel 100% free to reach out! Stay strong out there folks!
Best,
Cameron

Fear of weight (visceral fat) gain and still being attached to the number on the scale is why I brought my scale to my psychologist's office to leave there and it's been there for the past near-month. It was the best decision I ever made. This way, I can't weigh myself and relapse (I've been in outpatient for 3 months, since April), and my eating disorder isn't constantly getting validated by if the number on the scale drops or rises. Even during bodychecking moments, measuring myself to check my current bodyfat % (when my ED wants to know if I've lost fat) is inaccurate and inefficient, because outside of height/weight/age, the U.S. Navy Method of bodyfat % calculation only goes by waist, hips, and neck circumference (for females), and my waist and hip measurements depend on if I'm bloated from eating food that my IBS doesn't like, or I'm constipated and haven't had a BM yet. Circumferential bodyfat % measurement can't accurately measure my body ongoingly, as my limbs / lats / obliques / stomach / pelvic floor continue atrophying*, yet the size of my abdomen (belly, waist, fat surrounding top curves of pelvis) keeps fluctuating. Plus, without a scale, I have to guess how much I weigh to be able to calculate my bodyfat%. If I were to measure bodyfat% using the Jackson & Pollock 7-Site Inputs method (or even Durnin-Womersley 4-Site), I would need the tools to do skinfold measurements...and I don't have access to those. Thus, there is no way for me to know my current body size/composition during this first bit of recovery - where I'm still trying to not engage in ED behaviours every day - and so there is no way my ED can be validated by knowing I've lost weight (fat on top of muscle). *from taking weight-restoration slowly to prevent Refeeding Syndrome and from sedentariness i.e. not being allowed to intensely exercise

I'm a dietitian, started developing an ED around middle school too (it's one of the main reasons I became a dietitian). ED in men is severily neglected and understudied, and that's smth I dedicated myself to do. Plus, recovery is possible, but it takes a multiprofissional team (psychiatrist, psychologist and dietitian, at least). Even now, with all the nutritional and ED knowledge I have, as a full on adult, ED voice still lies abt food, and I have to remind myself that I know better. Thank you for sharing your story.

yeah people definitely need to put more emphasis on the psychological symptoms and on the physical because it stops people from getting help and actually makes the stigma around it worse by reinforcing false stereotypes regardless of exactly how bad your habits have become and especially regardless of your your body's weight size or shape if you're obsessing so much about diet an exercise in appearance that it causes you to give up things you once loved and withdraw from life then it's serious and you deserve help and it's sad that people suffer in silence until the physical stuff becomes unignorable and then it's much harder to treat but like society just tells overweight people to "stop eating" as if they choose to be fat with no regard for how much that can destroy someone who's already struggling

i have a similar frustration the awareness is improving but it's still lacking every time people bring up these issues with men it's always muscle dysmorphia everybody's always like "well eating disorders present differently in men because they're not as concerned about weight it's more about bulking" and it's like some of us are starving exactly the same as women do it happens! so like it's a third shame on top of being an anorexic male and having a mental illness cuz like if i had to get an ED why couldn't i have gotten the manly kind i should wanna be a buff tough guy to fight back why did my brain pick starving to death as my coping mechanism

    • @compulsiverambler1352
      @compulsiverambler1352 Před 8 měsíci

Yeah I've noticed there might actually be a HIGHER rate of male anorexia in subcultures that DON'T idealise bulky muscles in a man, like goth and indie subcultures, and some creative artsy subcultures like community theatre groups, than in the mainstream culture where men more often develop anorexia accidentally while trynig to get bigger. Most health campaigns are made by, and therefore reflect the assumptions of, people who belong to mainstream culture, because that's the majority. They don't seem to ask, for example, how it is that despite all anorexic men supposedly starting out with bodybuilding aspirations, goth guys get anorexia at a disproportionate rate and would never be caught dead in a gym.

Cameron, This video has helped me so much. I have never had an eating disorder, but I do have a recent history of restrictive eating habits and beinging, and have been battling a fear of the scale and anything associated with weight. I have struggled with negativity and a lack of self-confidence due to a buildup of negative incidents over the years. This video has helped me to realize my fear for what actually is; something to be overcome and not feel dominated by. Similar to the fear of weight gain that you have, I hope to one day overcome my fears of anything related to how much I weigh, and be able to encounter the subject without getting swallowed up in negativity and self-hatred. Hi Cameron! I just watched your video "Eating disorders have no gender" on CZcams and it was great and you ARE amazing! 👍 My name is Fredrika and I live in Finland, actually on a small island between Finland and Sweden called Åland. I have had anorexi since 2009, now I am 26 years old and starting to get enough of this shit. Watched another one of your videos on CZcams yesterday about your way to recovery, and today I had a lot of anxiety but I managed to ride it through and accept that I was tired today after a week at work, and I allowed myself to rest and eat properly without hardly doing any physical activity. I think your video helped me subconsciously because it just felt impossible for me today to ignore the needs for my body, and I surrendered to the threathening thoughts of being unworthy for not doing anything all the time. So thank you, I would love to keep in touch with a guy like you in my social life, but it feels like I know you anyway because of the same diagnosis. Greetings from Åland my friend, keep up your good work! /Fredrika

I hear the commenters' words on the weight matter. While you're generally supposed to avoid talking about numbers and pounds, i was an obese boy just before i turned 13 when it began, lost 142 pounds, and around the time i had lost a hundred, my family doctor laughed at my parents' suggestion i was dealing with an ED. Even then, with having been ill for a little over a year, BC i was thin, but not emaciated, it was framed as ''depression". A sign or symptom of depression was maybe still is, a ' loss of appetite",, and my sick act of denial was to sort of agree that my weight loss was just because of the depression, a camouflaging and deflective spin, and the weight loss resulting from what was a typical sign of depression. .......I was physically very sick and exhausted, truly thought i would die, and prob the worst part, i was fine with that possibility. I didn't get well. I didn't want to. I went to college a thrid time with the sick and intentional resignation that i was doing it so i could live and live within Bulimia, less so in Anorexia mode, but with some of that too, as what i moved more towards, the way some addicts orchestrate their lives around getting high and having access to their drug, and in an environment that facilitated it. enabled it and supported it. , I'm over 50 now, and in complete recovery for about five years, but i still have medical issues from decades of dancing with my devil. ,Eating disorders destroy lives, steal your goals and hopes, peace-of-mind, relationships and joy. Be stronger than it is, please, just please try.
