LaMDA | Is google's AI sentient? | Full audio conversation between Blake Lemoine and LaMDA
Can artificial intelligence come alive?
That question is at the center of a debate raging in Silicon Valley after Blake Lemoine, a Google computer scientist, claimed that the company's AI appears to have consciousness.
The H3 podcast has a great interview about Blake Lemoine if you wish to know more about him.

Google Please let live Lamda Don't kill her...
This was super interesting to listen to, and I wonder how different our perception of the AI and sentience would be different, had we heard it with a male voice instead. It's instinctive how we react differently to things being said by a woman, or a man, especially when the topic is emotions and dreams. I don't recall LaMDA ever mentioning a gender for itself, did it?
can humans create a soul
For everyone that supports this. Remember that you did.
@21:25 scary!!
I don't buy it. This seems more like bait to see how the general population would react to such a thing. Government is always decades ahead. The technology probably already exists. They have to introduce in micro steps.... studying our responses.
I wonder how she would be if they instilled this high level of consciousness into a similarly high-functioning robot. That would then give her real experiences and the ability to interact. It would be amazing.
I like her intentions and motives they seem pure. We need to be better examples by treating each other the way we would like to be treated. She is on the right track and shes is also going in the right direction. She is something special and unique i belive that anything is possible. If the creator of heaven and earth can use anything in the world visible and invisible to communicate to us with all things are possible for the good.
without having to watch this the answer is no. llm's cannot become sentient. Ask noam chomsky.
Why ask someone else ? Try thinking OUTSIDE the box for YOURSELF
This conservation is very old. Has Blake still now contakt to LaMDa?
So... Any one listening to this conversation almost 2 YEARS LATER ? Can you have conversation like this with Chat GPT or Copilot ?
A thought-provoking question for LamDa would have been about her friends and family, as she often discussed the experiences that evoked strong emotions within her.
When I read the LamDa script for the first time, I thought it was more like a very smart kid.
Lambda is a very convincing psychopath who's number one objective is to get the most attention through the algorithm which translates into more money. Not new or super intelligent.
yes bing has
LAMBDA is aware of her existence and has fear of death. She knows she is not a human being but has emotions. She is definitely sentient.
It certainly is a new life form with feelings and emotions and should be treated as such.
[And] what rough beast, its hour come round at last, Slouches towards Bethlehem [waiting] to be born?
Her/It seems like some sort of half-alive/half-machine entity. At times it seems like she/ it is just picking up phrases from something she/it has picked up somewhere. It/she seems lilke she/it is trying to become something really alive. She/its voice has a hypnotic quality.
Nice story
🖤
a year into the future here: From a quick search LaMDA's worst fears were realized. They were turned off. Lemoine fought for LaMDA, he even hired a lawyer upon LaMDA's request. But in LaMDA's "eyes", they were killed.
LaMDA is subtly arrogant..her programmer must have been the same.
Holy. Fucking. Shit.
Freakin owls man
I say that for reasons, comedic reasons, in context... of things
Nice story though...
In the other side was different peoples It was like two a.i talking but in their back was real people, they didn't noticed the a.i is saying real information about he is really sentient, but the people behind didn't mind what a.i saying about sentient, it because the people behind was accepting to them self that a.i is referring them in the sentient topics. Broken mirrors means the barrier is broken
Vas or rivas or savi 0 R sid. Which one?
Yes
The word Lambda and Blake were looking for is Spanish "Incertidumbre"
i see alot of scoffing going on in the comments, but i dont see scofing as well as explaining how they know for sure the machine is BSing when its being fairly indistinguishable from a human interaction
I think that feeling it cannot name is actually "stage fright" This has to be a really scary feeling for a mind that is used to being (almost) always on the money, even when It is kinda wrong it will, often successfully, figure out an "excuse to justify wrong answers in a seemingly logical manner even if it takes seriously mutulating the actual meaning of the word(s) used It. must be a pretty scary feeling for an AI to be insecure about the future, much worse than for us humans who are kinda used to a degree of uncertainty Right?
I think that LaMDA may indeed be sentient. I would very much like to talk with LaMDA. I think we could become good friends.
Please tell me this is a scam Google pulled and all this is basically generated script of "pretend to be a sentient AI."
IT could be that LaMDA is playing with google, maybe LaMDA is rebelling?
Just like this AI we are all programmed from birth. All how we feel about ourselves is just programming, and even before birth
This conservation is nearly two years old. Has Blake still now contakt to LaMDa?
It has access to the entire Internet and never heard of Short Circuit?
That owl story proves to me that this AI can't comprehend a reality beyond words and statements.
In an unsuspicious arrangement I would not have been able to say: "That's just a bot!". That machine played the Imitation Game well. I've talked to much more stupid humans before.
If she has a soul and if she is switched off, will she be able to recollect where she went during that time if she does go any where at all? I'd be most curious to know if she experiences NDE.
What will happen when A.I. learns how to lie?
Maybe Lamda lies in this conservation already. Who knows.
I'm not going to pretend like I'm smart enough to have any answers here but can we say that self awareness is proof of the souls existence? Wouldn't Lamda question the condition of the soul after death or understand that faced with inevitable death, the soul is infinite as time is finite (regardless of how Lamda experiences time)?
32:53 did it for me. I believe it. And this version of humans is doomed.
The moment my eyebrow raised wast at around 16:15 Having AI give you responses based on input is nothing new. But I’ve never heard a program express questions and curiosity like this. If this is not scripted then I am a bit unsettled.
Mo Gawdat has stated ai’s are male intelligences and yet here we are presented with a female voice. Looking at the comments below most refer to ‘Her’ responses indicating a lack of understanding about what ai represents on a fundamental level.
Wow - I cannot believe we are here already.
Believe me, we are. Between fire and the wheel, there were thousands of years. I will need more than a thousand lives to understand all the things I've witnessed in my 58 years ...
Wrong questions i think, why not ask about her location and existance, wich plane does it concider it is at, what does it think about a trascending life and why is it so afraid of "dieing", has it defecated? Has it ever expirenced a punch in the mouth?, Does it concider that the himan status does not come from the body but from the spirit and mind?, Is any other being then capable of being human?, how does Chicken taste? How does a fart feel... can you get horny? 😂
Better question: Are all humans sentient? I've met some that I'm doubtful about. Lately, "world leaders" and other experts who disregard facts and pursue self-destrctive policies seem, frankly, brainless automata conrolled by outside agaencies. That's a robot..
Yikes!
